2026 School Is Cool

The 13th annual #SchoolisCool is set at the new W.T. Brookshire Conference Center and Rose Garden Center, bringing families together to help students get ready for the school year. There is no cost to attend and the public is welcome. Available on site are free haircuts, vision screenings, immunizations, and additional resources from participating vendors. Students need to be present to receive supplies and services. Through a partnership among the City of Tyler, the Tyler Area Business Education Council, and TISD, nearly 2,000 backpacks were provided in 2025. Each $50 contribution covers a backpack filled with school supplies for a child in need. Donations may be made through Eventbrite when details are announced, or by cash or check made payable to the Tyler Area Business Education Council. Cash and checks can be dropped off or mailed. This fat quarter friendly project uses 15 pieces and features a mix and match layout that helps build confidence with cutting and piecing while keeping the process engaging. One session does not require a sewing machine, allowing time for planning and cutting before assembly. An in-store kit is available with 15 fat quarters, or choose a fat quarter bundle with at least 15 pieces. Additional fabric needed during the class includes 1.5 yards for background and sashing and 1.25 yards for the border. Move step by step through the pattern and make steady progress on a versatile quilt.

Amy leads a hands-on Bargello quilting class that shows how to build this flowing design with only two fabrics, keeping the method approachable while still achieving striking results. Rooted in a tradition that began with 14th century hand embroidery, this style can shine in a wide range of color combinations. The class fee is $100 and does not include the kit. An in-store kit purchase is required and includes two yards of background fabric, one yard of focal fabric, and the pattern. Plan to bring numbered pins, a small iron, a small pressing mat, binding clips, and coordinating thread. A seam roller is optional. A sewing machine and basic notions are on the supply list, although one session is designated as no machines. Most supplies can be purchased at the store if needed.

This introductory close quarters battle footwork course uses a Force On Target format focused on team-based fundamentals. Participants practice core procedures such as room entry and navigating hallway problems including crossings and T-intersections, while also reinforcing the free flow CQB principles covered in the dry fire rifle curriculum. Tuition is $300 and includes three boxes of simmunition for a 5.56 AR configured with course-provided simulation bolts. Additional rounds may be available if the included amount is exceeded. In alignment with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, symbolized by the gold ribbon, the event highlights the work of Gold Network of East TX, a registered 501c3 nonprofit serving local pediatric cancer families. Proceeds support the organization’s local programs as well as pediatric cancer research projects.

BEADED AND BEDAZZLED STEER SKULL WORKSHOP

A four-day, hands-on workshop at a downtown Tyler, TX studio focuses on designing and embellishing a beaded and jeweled steer skull. Suitable for all skill levels, the class covers how to plan a cohesive pattern, apply a range of materials, and choose the right adhesives when working on dimensional surfaces. All supplies are provided, including a faux skull, tools, adhesives, crystals, rhinestone chain, and beads, and the project uses the same style of skull and comparable materials featured in the organizer’s example. Breakfast and lunch are included each day. Tickets are $750 per student, with registration and payment available through the ticket link, and alternative payment arrangements available by request. Assistance is offered for canceling or rescheduling, and refunds may take up to 30 days. Out-of-town participants can receive lodging suggestions and help coordinating travel. Tyler is located just under two hours east of Dallas and is served by the modern Tyler Pounds Field airport.
