An open-air evening of musical theater favorites suitable for all ages, featuring Ginger Bess. Presented as part of a free Sunday night concert series supported in part by Layton R.A.M.P., the program blends beloved show tunes with newer Broadway hits. Expect powerful vocals and engaging performances from this beloved local artist that bring the spirit of Broadway to a relaxed outdoor setting. Guests may bring a blanket or camp chair, or use the stadium seating, and outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are welcome.

Funk and soul mainstays Tower of Power bring their storied horn-driven sound to the Layton Ed Kenley Amphitheater as part of the Summer Nights With the Stars concert series. For 58 years, the band has evolved from its beginnings as The Motowns, with Emilio Castillo, Rocco on bass, and Castillo’s brother on drums, soon joined by baritone saxophonist “Doc” Kupka and a new name that matched their ambitions. Early releases like East Bay Grease set the tone and led to a Warner Brothers deal, followed by the 1972 album Bump City with favorites such as You’re Still a Young Man and Down to the Nightclub. The 1970s added staples like So Very Hard to Go and What Is Hip?, and the group continued to tour, record, and support a wide range of artists including Otis Redding, Elton John, Santana, the Grateful Dead, John Lee Hooker, Aerosmith, and Bonnie Raitt. Their 50th anniversary was marked with a return to Oakland and the live release 50 Years of Funk & Soul: Live at the Fox Theater.
