5K Run/Walk to end Colon Cancer

A community 5K run and walk at the JMU Festival Lawn shines a light on colon cancer awareness. Organized by the SVG team and JMU SAAC, this event encourages turning a local effort into a broader movement for colorectal cancer education and action. Dr. Pou encourages starting meaningful conversations at home by reaching out to parents and loved ones about screening and symptoms. For adults 45 and older, a colonoscopy is recommended as the leading screening option. Those younger than 45 are reminded not to ignore warning signs and to seek care early. The TCG Gathering

Women's Monday Night Mountain Bike Ride

A relaxed, women-focused mountain bike ride explores the Massanutten Western Slope Trails at an easygoing, no-drop pace. Expect dirt singletrack with some rocky sections and frequent regrouping spots, with route choices adjusted to match what the group wants to ride. Rides typically cover about 4 to 6 miles. An electronic waiver is required before participating. If you do not already have a parking pass, a ride leader can provide one when you arrive. Weyers Cave Gravel Ride

Set out from The Alpine Goat Brewery for a weekly gravel ride led by Jesse Einstein. The route mixes paved stretches with plenty of gravel on a scenic loop. Choose about 10 miles or extend to roughly 20, with a relaxed, social pace around 12 to 14 mph. Regroup spots are planned so the group stays together and nobody is left behind. After the ride, there is time to unwind and socialize at the brewery.

Sound Bath Meditation Experience

Step away from the noise and settle into a calming sound meditation at Massanutten Resort. Guided by Greg Burns of Metta Vibrations, the session surrounds participants with the tones of singing bowls, a gong, chimes, and other resonant instruments to encourage deep relaxation. Many people report benefits such as improved sleep and reduced discomfort, and each person’s experience can feel unique. The class welcomes both first-timers and seasoned meditators. A yoga mat or a chair will be provided, and everyone receives a take-home yoga towel from the resort. You do not need to bring anything, though a favorite crystal or a cozy blanket is welcome. Her+ Trail Ramble

A welcoming, femme-focused community trail run explores the Massanutten Western Slope trails, centering women who are new to trail running as well as BIPOC participants, nonbinary runners, and trans women. The group meets at the Massanutten Western Slope parking lot and moves at an approximate 12 minute per mile pace. Runners stay together with quick regrouping at each junction, making this a social outing rather than a training session. The route starts on double-track gravel out to the pond for the first mile and a half, then transitions to singletrack. It is organized in three-mile segments that return to the start, with the option to complete three miles or continue for six. The first loop follows Boundary to the pond and Creekside, and the second continues via Homestead and Red White + Blue. No parking pass is required; if you do not have one, ask a run leader upon arrival. Participants complete an electronic waiver before the run. Weather updates and any cancellations are shared on Facebook and Instagram at @svbcoalitionbike, and the run is canceled when the forecast shows a 40 percent or greater chance of storms. Wear long pants and closed toe shoes, and bring gloves and water if you have them. To reach the worksite, enter the Western Slope through the main gate by the horses, which is the entrance just downhill from the Western Slope parking area, then follow the trail work signs up the road and the red trail work markers to the crew. The opening of Nothing Alive Asks to Stay Small presents a mixed media showcase by Angela M. Carter, centering on collage and complemented by fluid acrylic abstractions achieved through hand marbling and layered paint. The work traces movement and transformation, focusing on the steady force of growth. Nearly all materials are reclaimed or secondhand, with gathered papers, textures, and fragments reassembled into new compositions and often finished with marbled, fluid techniques. Beginning with elements that already hold history, each piece reshapes what was discarded into fresh form and meaning. For Carter, this practice aligns with a personal moment of using what is available, reclaiming space, and refusing to remain small. The materials themselves carry the narrative, suggesting how beauty and renewal can emerge through repair and transformation. Through collage, fluid abstraction, and layered surfaces, the exhibition encourages reflection on resilience, creativity, and the fragments we choose to carry forward. Carter is a Harrisonburg based visual artist, poet, and community advocate whose layered compositions evoke movement, organic systems, and evolving landscapes. A longtime creative voice in the Shenandoah Valley, she is also a published poet and spoken word performer who has given hundreds of readings across the East Coast. Her writing blends personal storytelling with social themes and focuses on survival, identity, and renewal. She is the author of Memory Chose a Woman’s Body and the forthcoming poetry memoir Love Is the Dying Dog. Her work has earned nominations for the Pushcart Prize and the Virginia Literary Award, and she serves as a judge for the Poetry Society of Virginia annual poetry contests. The opening also offers an opportunity to meet the artist, view the artwork, and enjoy light refreshments.

LWM First Fridays with Brooke Imber: Earth Bliss

Larson Wealth Management hosts local artist, teacher, and outdoor learning enthusiast Brooke Imber, highlighting her photography series Earth Bliss. Imber, an art teacher at Keister Elementary School, believes some of the best classrooms have no walls. She loves fresh air, building stick forts, and squirrels, and has teamed up with hundreds of community members to create outdoor learning spaces where students make art amid the things that inspire them. Earth Bliss gathers moments that made her pause, from sweeping landscapes to intimate views of moss, surprise appearances by cute animals, and natural light arriving at just the right instant. Some images celebrate big vistas while others focus on tiny details many people might pass by, all reflecting her belief that beauty and curiosity live in the smallest features of the environment. Through her teaching and her art she encourages others to slow down, look closely, and reconnect with nature, and this series offers an invitation to notice the quiet magic present every day. Light snacks, non-alcoholic refreshments, wine, beer, and a small selection of cocktails will be provided.

Dolly Parton

A First Friday partnership highlights Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and a shared focus on getting books into the hands of young readers. Ten percent of the day’s sales will support the Imagination Library, a program that mails free, high-quality, age-appropriate books to children from birth through age five in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, with no income requirement. The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County serves as the local affiliate. A storewide 50 percent off sale will be offered, with the collectibles department discounted 25 percent. No live entertainment is planned. An area will be set aside to learn more about the organization, its mission, and its long-term goals.

May First Friday

From These Bricks presents an exhibit and hands-on workshop where reclaimed bricks and raw clay become a medium for shared remembrance and repair. Participants engage with fragments in both story and structure, rebuilding by touch and through conversation. Growing out of sustained inquiry into how earth is formed into the everyday brick, the experience invites reflection on extraction, tactility, the passage of time, and sustainability. Together, participants consider brickmaking traditions in the Shenandoah Valley and weave present-day narratives with the region’s past. Artist-facilitators Traci Wile and Renée Calway guide the program. Wile is a community organizer, artist, educator, and architectural designer whose practice centers inclusive, co-created design. She serves as an assistant professor of architecture at James Madison University, encouraging students to view architecture as a force for change grounded in dialogue, equity, and care for the environment. Calway leads community-centered, interactive healing arts experiences and repurposes materials in unexpected ways to spark social and ecological awareness, with a particular interest in the intersections of socio-politics and statistics. She teaches studio classes for all ages at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art and is a first-year MFA candidate at James Madison University.

The (Fab, Faux) Wedding Party

The Loft at Liberty St. will be transformed into an Italian villa, inviting guests to feel as if they have stepped onto a Tuscan hillside. Styled as a full wedding celebration, the evening features a runway of wedding fashion, hair and makeup showcases, musicians, florals, photographers, cocktail hour, dinner, a DJ, dancing, cake and more, all designed to highlight local wedding professionals. It is an opportunity to gather inspiration for a future celebration and connect with area vendors, and attendance is open to everyone, not only engaged couples. Tickets are $100 for two people. The album release for DIS/CONNECT takes place at Broad Porch Coffee Co. A pleasure-seeking young man is transformed after witnessing injustice, becoming an outlaw in Sherwood Forest. Alongside allies like Little John and Friar Tuck, he meets Maid Marian Fitzwalter, a daring adventurer who wins his heart. Rooted in the English ballads of the 14th and 15th centuries, this production mixes spirited action, romance, and a clear call for social justice. John Van Deusen

John Van Deusen brings his tour to Weavers Mennonite Church with Thomas Austin. Van Deusen first came to prominence leading the indie rock band The Lonely Forest, which toured with Death Cab for Cutie, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and earned best new artist recognition from NPR. He later began releasing music under his own name, building a solo catalog of six full length albums that move between energetic indie rock and intimate lo fi acoustic sounds. His newest project, As Long As I Am In The Tent Of This Body I Will Make A Joyful Noise, is being issued in two parts through Anotherland Records. On stage he favors an open, conversational style, often performing alone with guitar and piano, and at times backed by a full band, using the moment to share pieces of his story and connect with the audience. Beyond his solo work he also plays in Telephone Friends and Buffet, serves as a worship leader at a local church, and writes modern hymns for a publisher. Thomas Austin, a theo folk singer and writer, contributes a set shaped by two EPs, Indiana and Evergreen, along with his full length album Eternal Life. He also shares original stories and essays with his email subscribers and lives in Nashville with his wife, Skye.

Marceline Vineyards presents live music from Jessi Pugh, an indie pop country artist from Bridgewater, Virginia. Inspired by her grandfather, known as Pop, she began by singing southern gospel and bluegrass with her cousins in a family group called Cousins For Christ, which set her on a path toward a music career. After high school she moved to Nashville, where she has spent the past five years writing songs, performing, and refining her craft. Since beginning to release music in October 2021, she has accumulated more than 175,000 streams in one year as an independent artist. Her song "Hung Up On You" was featured on Spotify's Top 100 Fresh Finds Country: Best of 2021, and her 2022 releases "Ashes," "Hometown Highway," and "Coastin'" appeared on Spotify editorial playlists including Next From Nashville, New Music Friday Country, Fresh Finds Country, and Young Nashville.

At Lucy Simms Center Auditorium, author Jon Steinman leads a presentation with a question and answer session on grocery democracy and the role of food co-ops in the current food system. With more than twenty years of experience, he explains what co-op membership entails and why it matters as food supply chains become more consolidated. The discussion considers how individual consumers, often not organized, still hold significant potential when they act together, and it examines both opportunities and challenges within cooperative democracy. Steinman shares insights on how to mobilize consumer power through co-ops. This free event includes light refreshments from the co-op, and RSVPs are requested to help plan the amount of food.

May 2026 Not-so-monthly 9-ball Tournament

A not-so-monthly 9-ball tournament returns to Gold Crown Billiards Bar & Grill with a Calcutta before play begins. Registration is required prior to the Calcutta and is handled by direct message to Joel Cochran. The field is limited to 32 players and the entry fee is $60. Matches are double elimination with Fargo-based handicaps, which may be adjusted if needed. It is alternate break and players rack their own. If the 9-ball is made on the break it is spotted, and the breaker may choose to rerack and rebreak. The three-foul rule will be enforced. There are a few updates to the schedule for this edition.

Ladies Only Ride #2

Round two of the VAOR Ladies Only Ride puts women in the driver’s seat for a mountain trail day. Men are welcome to attend as passengers, help with snacks, offer encouragement, and appreciate the skills on display, but they will not be driving. The route begins on Fort Seybert Trail, a friendly stretch that serves as a comfortable warm-up. At the top, a spacious clearing offers a place to pause for lunch and relax. The adventure continues down German River Road, where the terrain brings water crossings, off camber sections, some steeper climbs, and the possibility of a few pinstripes. The focus is on keeping things engaging rather than extreme. The group meets at an Exxon and then travels to the trailhead together. Participants should pack a lunch and bring water for a full day on the trail.

Local bands gather at Restless Moons Brewing to celebrate a pivotal year in music, revisiting standout songs from 1991. Admission is free and donations will be collected for The Rocktown house of Music. The show features performances by Jaguardini, Dr.How & The Reasons to Live, Amateur Rodeo, Kelly May & Crystal Armentrout, Todd Schlabach, Carl Brooks of the Findells, Basement Rebellion, Scantron The destroyer, Trouble in the trailer park, Erin Kvande, Mothman Rodeo, Scott Murray, Uncle Bengine, and The Dad Bods, with more to be announced. Sound for the evening is provided by The Tuning Fork and the celebration is hosted by Restless Moons Brewing.

Homemade Swap - June 7

A relaxed exchange of handmade goods takes place in the loft at Valley Pike Farm Market. Participants bring one homemade item for each RSVP and trade with fellow attendees. Items can include baked goods, crafts, bath and body products, home decor, or jewelry. There is no fee to take part beyond contributing the item you make. Friends and neighbors are welcome.

Art Night: A Space for Expression & Healing

At Harrisonburg First Church of the Brethren, the Sadie Rose Foundation presents its first Art Night session with guidance from Loring Gibson. The evening centers on creative expression as a supportive way to work through emotions and welcomes both seasoned artists and those who have not made art in years. Loring will offer simple instruction to begin, then participants can take the lead and develop a piece that feels personal. All art materials will be available, and anyone who prefers familiar tools may bring their own. The setting is relaxed and pressure free, giving space to create at a comfortable pace.

Intro to Flower Farming: A guided Q&A Tour

Designed for growers at any stage, this guided Q&A walk at Harmony Harvest Farm offers an inside look at flower production. Ask detailed questions and learn directly from the lead farmers in a focused setting. The tour runs about 90 minutes and is limited to five participants, creating space for personalized guidance and practical takeaways. This is a walking experience, so appropriate footwear is recommended. Tours are offered monthly. Ticket sales are final, with rescheduling available if plans change. Muhlenberg Community Yard Sale

The annual Muhlenberg Community Yard Sale spans the Muhlenberg parking lots and the Muhlenberg Activities Center, making it simple to shop rain or shine. Shoppers can browse a broad mix of items at budget-friendly prices, and all proceeds benefit the ministries at Muhlenberg. Homemade baked goods will also be available. Individuals may reserve a selling space in the parking lot, with each spot including a table and two chairs for $25, and additional spaces, tables, or chairs offered at a discounted rate. Donations for the sale are accepted at the Muhlenberg Gathering Area during designated drop-off windows.

Musical Theater Camp

Explore musical theatre in a camp for ages 7 to 16. Participants rehearse and stage The Jungle Book KIDS while developing skills in acting, singing, and dance. Those who prefer offstage roles can learn about sets, lighting, sound, costuming, and leadership as part of the production. Tuition is $400, and Carrendo Studios students receive a $50 discount.

Pressure Canner Testing - Bridgewater

Prepare for canning season with a free pressure canner check at Rockingham Cooperative Ace Hardware in Bridgewater. Virginia Cooperative Extension representatives will be on site for a two hour session to test lids, gaskets, and seals so your equipment is in safe working order. If you cannot stop by during the event, you can drop off lids in advance for inspection. While you are there, browse canning supplies such as jars, lids, accessories, and other seasonal necessities to get stocked for the year. Suitable for both experienced canners and those just starting out who want extra confidence before preserving.

Preserve the Season: Summer Kitchen Summer Sauces

An interactive kitchen class designed with busy moms in mind focuses on practical ways to feed a family using simple, seasonal ingredients and a clear approach to dinner. Rather than collecting more recipes, the session shows how to build a flexible sauce that encourages kids to enjoy familiar foods, gives basic proteins, grains, and vegetables a finished touch, and refreshes leftovers without starting from scratch. Participants will learn a straightforward three-part method that blends creamy, sweet, and a savory or fat component using what is already on hand. Two sauces created together as teaching examples are tailored for kids, and everyone leaves with jars ready to use along with a guide to revisit whenever needed. The emphasis is confidence and flexibility with fewer end-of-day decisions, not perfection or cooking everything from scratch.

Smokehouse Pilots June 2026 Fly Out: Shenandoah Valley Airport VA (SHD)

A relaxed fly out hosted by Smokehouse Pilots Club brings pilots together at Shenandoah Valley Airport in Virginia, where the SmokeShow BBQ truck will be set up on the field serving smoked meats and other barbecue staples. Attendees can meet up, talk airplanes, and share a casual meal beside the aircraft. Pilots may arrive from any origin and stay as long as they like, with the destination listed as KSHD, Shenandoah Valley Airport in VA. Thanks go to Chris Botkin at KSHD for support and coordination. Flight safety is the sole responsibility of the pilot in command, and each PIC will determine what conditions are safe for flight. Smiles for Life Whitening for Children's Charities

Smiles For Life Dental Care in Bridgewater is participating in the Smiles for Life Foundation whitening campaign to benefit children. Whitening is provided through two visits, beginning with impressions and followed by a pickup of a custom tray in the whitening strength you choose. Each kit includes eight whitening syringes and costs $199. Participants must be 18 or older and have had a dental cleaning within the past six months. Proceeds support children locally and around the world, with Camp Still Meadows in Linville receiving local support for its year-round therapeutic programs serving children and adults with developmental or physical disabilities in a safe, creative environment. A raffle is also available, featuring a KiwiCo Science of Cooking Ice Cream Kit for $10 per ticket, a $100 Cedar Stone Spa gift card for $25 per ticket, Bose earbuds for $35 per ticket, a Snapology week-long camp for kids for $44 per ticket, and a $200 Amazon gift card for $50 per ticket. Summer Crafty Retreat in the Mountains

A long weekend retreat in Massanutten, Virginia invites women 18 and older to unplug and focus on crafting or simply enjoy time together. Bring any project you like, with makers of all kinds welcome, including quilters, cross-stitchers, scrapbookers, and diamond artists. This is a no-frills gathering with no pressure to buy products. Everyone provides their own drinks, snacks, and meals, and alcohol is permitted if brought by participants. Please also plan to bring an extra roll of toilet paper for your room along with personal bathroom supplies. Space is limited to eight participants, and the per-person rate is based on all eight spots being filled. The fee is $225 per person, secured with a $100 deposit and a remaining balance of $125. If fewer than eight attend, payments received will be refunded or the per-person rate may increase. Once eight deposits are received, refunds are not available.

Kids ages 8–14 spend a full week immersed in two complementary Studios that pair CNC Milling in the morning with Game Design in the afternoon. Through hands-on projects, participants discover how computer-controlled machines shape materials with precision, then apply digital design skills to build interactive games that emphasize structure, logic, and player experience. The combination highlights how ideas move from the screen to real-world production. By the end of the week, students complete the equivalent of the Explorer and Creator Levels in both Studios, making them eligible for the advanced Innovator Lab offered during the school year, where learners pursue more independent, self-directed projects. No prior experience is required. Additional Summer Camp pairings are available throughout the season from mid-June to early August, and an extended day option is available.

Youth Adventure Race Camp

Designed for adventurous kids ages 9 to 16, this weeklong camp turns the Massanutten Resort property into an outdoor classroom focused on movement, teamwork, and growth. Campers tent camp on site and rotate through mountain biking, hiking, and team challenges, then cool off at the waterpark and pool or take on Adventure Park activities and other resort amenities. The schedule also includes outdoor skill building, a whitewater rafting outing on the Shenandoah River, campfires, storytelling, and time to connect with new friends. Guided by experienced instructors from GRIT Adventures, the program blends adventure racing concepts with leadership development and mental fitness in a supportive, age-appropriate setting. Participants practice communication and collaboration, learn to manage stress in the moment, push through discomfort and obstacles, and leave with stronger confidence, grit, and self-belief that translate to everyday life. All meals are provided for the duration of the camp. Capacity is limited. Need-based scholarships, along with sibling and military discounts, are available.

Overnight Girls Basketball Camp

An overnight basketball camp for girls at Eastern Mennonite University invites rising fourth through twelfth graders to develop their game with guidance from experienced coaches. Participants scrimmage with others in their age group and get a feel for campus life by staying in dorms, dining in a college cafeteria, and taking the court in a college arena.
