Focus Weekend: Tools of the Trade

Discover how everyday life in the nineteenth century was shaped by wood, tools, and the handmade skills people relied on. Set against the backdrop of a land once filled with old-growth forests, the program highlights a period when manufactured goods were increasingly available yet knowing how to make simple implements remained widespread, especially in rural and farming communities. Presenters share artifacts that range from household pottery and utensils to specialized crafts and tools, explaining how they were made and used. One session examines common objects in antebellum households and how they varied across social classes, with examples from the park’s own finds such as pottery and glass uncovered on site. Another talk focuses on woodworking, displaying numerous tools and discussing the central role of wood in daily life. A live basketmaking demonstration shows baskets at different stages, walking visitors through the steps that turn wood into a finished piece. These Focus Weekend programs are included with paid daily park admission. Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is a 424-acre Civil War campus in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, designated a National Historic Landmark, home to four museums and four antebellum homes, and the site of the Breakthrough Battlefield of April 2, 1865. The park offers a combination of high-tech museums and hands-on experiences and has been recognized by the Travel Channel as one of Virginia’s Best Places to Visit.
