The Golf Club at The Highlands5-Week Beginner Swing and Intermediate Combo Swing Dance Class Series
At the Optimist Club of Colonial Heights, instructors Roger and Denise Underhill lead a welcoming swing dance series with two levels. New dancers explore the basics of moving together, learning how to lead and follow, and building solid footwork. Experienced participants dive into an intermediate combo swing class that introduces more intricate patterns and fresh challenges. Singles and couples are both encouraged to take part, and the steps draw from classic blues, R&B, soul, and beach music. The atmosphere is friendly and supportive, helping dancers gain confidence while having fun. A suggested donation of $3 per person or $5 per couple supports the dance education efforts of Underhill’s Swing and Shag Dance Collective.
Optimist Club of Colonial Heights5-Week Intermediate Carolina Shag Dance Class Series
Move beyond memorized patterns and into the flow of Carolina Shag with a focused class series at the Optimist Club of Colonial Heights. Tailored for dancers who already command the fundamentals and want a more disciplined, in‑depth approach, this training examines partner dynamics so two people move as a single, connected unit. The method frames lead and follow as a nonverbal conversation based on clear physical suggestions and attentive responses, building an intuitive attunement between partners. Participants will refine the smooth, grounded glide associated with seasoned Shag, cultivate a quiet, level upper body, develop balanced connection through equal and opposite tone, and sharpen precise, fluid travel within the slot. To help advanced material shift from conscious effort to muscle memory, the curriculum follows a rhythm of introducing complex sequences, then dedicating time to review and integration. The aim is an effortless state where technique recedes, the music takes center stage, and the partnership feels natural and unforced. Best suited for experienced Shag dancers seeking to deepen technique, connection, and aesthetic quality.
