Farmers Market Help Desk - Ask a Master Gardener!

Master Gardener Volunteers will be at the Suffolk Farmers Market to talk through garden questions and offer practical, research-based guidance on topics like invasive plants and insects, trees, shrubs, vegetables, flowers, soils, native plants, plant diseases, water runoff, wildlife conflicts, integrated pest management, and more. Bring plant or insect samples sealed in a zipper bag, or share photos if that is easier. Volunteers can also explain how to become a VCE Master Gardener and support your community. Virginia Cooperative Extension works in partnership with Virginia Tech, Virginia State University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and local governments, and it is an equal opportunity employer. Driver at Seaboard Coastline Trail Pollinator Garden | Open Garden Days

Along the Seaboard Coastline Trail near Driver, the pollinator garden opens for select Monday sessions during the growing season. VCE Master Gardeners who plant and tend the space are on site to meet visitors, answer questions, offer quick tours, and share what is growing and why. Guests may also help with a bit of weeding. Perseids Meteor Shower Watch Party

Free and open to the public, this observing session with BBAA members focuses on the Perseids meteor shower at Heritage Park & Joel C. Bradshaw Fairgrounds on the outskirts of Windsor, Virginia. No telescope or binoculars are needed. With a new Moon and a typical zenithal hourly rate near 100, conditions are favorable for abundant meteors. The shower’s parent object is Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. To protect night vision, please drive carefully near the observing area and avoid shining headlights toward observers. Use the southernmost point along the paved road that circles the fence for parking, where a wide paved area can accommodate around eight vehicles. Comfort items can make the experience more enjoyable, including bug spray, a reclining chair or air mattress, a red light only flashlight, a blanket, and an extra change of clothes in case of heavy dew. This location offers darker skies away from city lights. Bright meteors, known as fireballs, can be reported to the American Meteor Society.

Labor Day Weekend Wheeling at the Proving Grounds 4x4 Course

Start Labor Day weekend with wheeling at the W2W Proving Grounds, a 4x4 obstacle playground offering challenges from mild to wild for your rig. It is a place to build driving skills, with most obstacles made from rubber tires to help limit damage and offer a forgiving experience if a line is missed. Admission is per vehicle, and you may bring as many passengers as there are seatbelts. Minors are not permitted. Ticket holders can arrive a little early to get rigs ready, and a drivers’ meeting leads into the start of wheeling. There is an optional social at Nanesmond Brewing Station afterward.

Plein Air Festival

A weeklong celebration of outdoor painting brings art to life across Historic Downtown Suffolk and the surrounding waterways. Presented by the Suffolk Art League, the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, and Suffolk Tourism, juried artists from across the country create original works inspired by historic streets, farmlands, and scenic waterfronts. During dedicated painting days, artists set up throughout the city, from the Nansemond River to the heart of downtown, transforming everyday vistas into works on canvas. The festivities also feature a Wet Paint Sale and Soirée at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, where freshly finished pieces are available to purchase alongside live music, food, and an open bar. A Quick Draw event held during the Taste of Suffolk festival welcomes participants of all ages and experience levels to complete a painting in about two hours. Proceeds support the Suffolk Art League and the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts. Visitors can explore and purchase unique pieces that capture favorite Suffolk scenes, creating a welcoming experience for families and art lovers.
