Kurt Vile and more

An all-ages concert featuring Kurt Vile and The Violators. Vile’s recent chapter is his tenth full-length, Philadelphia’s been good to me on Verve Records, a release shaped by the city that raised him and the in-between moments gathered on the road. Written from late 2023 into 2026 and recorded largely at his Mt. Airy home studio, OKV Central, the album blends intimate home-recording spirit with vivid, road-ready momentum. Longtime collaborators including Adam Langellotti, Matthew Jugenheimer, Kyle Spence, Jesse Trbovrich, and Rob Schnapf help craft a warm, unpolished shine with sparkling guitars and analog textures. The record nods to mentors and friends while folding past and present into reflective, free-rolling songs such as Zoom 97, Chance to Bleed, Rock O’ Stone, Every Time I Look at You, You Don’t Know Cuz It’s My Life, and Avalanches of Snow.

Left Eye Jump

Red Square hosts Burlington’s Left Eye Jump Band with a set steeped in classic blues traditions from Chicago, Texas, New Orleans, California, and the Delta, drawing on the sound of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Expect gritty slide guitar journeys alongside jump-swing in the spirit of T-Bone Walker, all rooted in music that resonates widely and forms a foundation for much of today’s sound. Formed in 1997 by musicians deeply connected to the genre, the group continues to feature accomplished players devoted to the deep blues. They most often appear as a six-piece, though past lineups have ranged from trio to octet with a horn section. Guitarist, singer, and bandleader Dennis Willmott traces his path to early listening in the 1950s to artists such as Leadbelly and Mance Lipscomb, inspiration in 1959 from Lightning Hopkins along with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, and early 1960s Boston coffeehouse performances of acoustic Piedmont, Delta, and Texas twelve-bar styles. In the early 1990s he shifted to urban electric blues and, through Vermont Blues Society jam sessions, made the connections that led to this band. The goal is to light up the room with a West Side Chicago stomp, ease into a soul-searching slow blues, then get bodies moving with Texas funk or a New Orleans rumba boogie.

Dope Is Death Film Screening

Gather for a community-centered evening featuring a screening of Dope is Death, along with snacks, conversation, and information about recovery and addiction support resources. The documentary by Mia Donovan explores how Black and Brown organizers and their allies, guided by love, resolve, and radical politics, launched the first acupuncture-based detox program in the United States in 1973. After the film, there will be time for discussion and the option to receive ear acupuncture. This sliding scale event directs all proceeds to Community Acupuncture SoBu to support ear acupuncture training. Ear acupuncture will be provided by acupuncturist Sierra Tarinelli, a Vermont-born practitioner with 25 years of direct patient care experience who studied at the Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley from 2008 to 2012. Hard Boiled

Presented by guest programmer and VTIFF member Ravi Venkataraman, this program spotlights John Woo’s Hard Boiled, a 1992 milestone that arrived as his Hong Kong tenure was drawing to a close. It capped a streak that included The Killer, A Better Tomorrow, and Bullet in the Head, works that transformed stylized violence into art and paved Woo’s way to Hollywood. The following year he directed Jean-Claude Van Damme in Hard Target, often cited as the first major Hollywood studio film directed by a Chinese filmmaker. Hard Boiled stands as a high-water mark in the genre often called heroic bloodshed, filled with intricately staged gunfights, long takes, propulsive imagery, and sumptuous slow motion, and it showcases the peak of Woo’s celebrated collaboration with star Chow Yun-fat. In a warm-hearted twist on the Dirty Harry template, Chow plays the world-weary detective Tequila Yuen as he navigates Triad underworlds, undercover operations, and chaotic police assaults. More than a simple cops-versus-criminals tale, the film blends originality with dark humor and surges toward a hospital climax that ranks among action cinema’s most memorable set pieces. After many years without a home release, Hard Boiled returns in a new 4K restoration.

Blood on the Clocktower

Set in Ravenswood Bluff, a once peaceful town now threatened by a concealed demon, this social deduction experience divides 5 to 20 players into Good and Evil under the guidance of a Storyteller. Days are for open conversation and whispered side talks as rumors and clues surface, often ending in a vote to execute a suspected villain. Nights are silent, and the Storyteller wakes players one at a time to use abilities, gather information, sow confusion, or kill. Each participant has a distinct role with a special power, and no two players share the same character. The Storyteller manages the flow with the game’s pieces so everyone can stay mobile without a table or board. Even eliminated characters remain in play as ghosts who can still influence the outcome. Late arrivals can enter as Travelers with potent abilities and uncertain loyalties. The aim is clear, identify and execute the true demon before evil outnumbers the townsfolk.

Left Eye Jump

The blues returns to Red Square with Burlington, Vermont’s Left Eye Jump Band, channeling classic styles from Chicago, Texas, New Orleans, California, and the Delta rooted in the 1940s through the 1960s. The set blends raw Delta slide guitar, jump swing in the spirit of T-Bone Walker, heartfelt slow blues, and grooves that nod to Texas funk and a New Orleans rumba boogie. Formed in 1997 by musicians deeply grounded in the genre, the group sustains an authentic sound by drawing high caliber players devoted to the deep blues. They most often perform as a six piece, though past lineups have ranged from a trio to an eight piece with a horn section. Guitarist, vocalist, and bandleader Dennis Willmott traces his journey from 1950s acoustic influences like Leadbelly and Mance Lipscomb, inspiration in 1959 from Lightning Hopkins and the duo of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, to early 1960s Boston coffeehouse performances in the Piedmont, Delta, and Texas twelve bar traditions. In the early 1990s he shifted to electric blues and connected through Vermont Blues Society jam sessions, laying the groundwork for this band.

Mad Bills to Pay (or Destiny, dile que no soy malo)

Joel Alfonso Vargas’ debut feature unfolds in the Bronx, captured with a quick, guerrilla-style approach over 14 days. Seen through the weary gaze of Rico, a 19-year-old Dominican American hustler, the story follows his easygoing routine of video games, weed, and flirting, financed by selling homemade “nutties,” bright mixes of rum, vodka, and juice, on the beach. He lives with his mother, who works nights as a nurse, and drifts along until Destiny, his teenage girlfriend, begins staying with his family. The carefree rhythm slips away, and Rico is pushed to face responsibilities he is not ready to handle. With a sunlit, rough-edged spirit that recalls life-on-the-margins stories in the vein of Andrea Arnold, Mad Bills to Pay received the Sundance NEXT Special Jury Award for its ensemble of mostly first-time actors.

Deer Tick

Deer Tick appears for an all ages concert. The long-running indie rock quartet of John McCauley, Ian O’Neil, Dennis Ryan, and Christopher Ryan recently completed their ninth studio album, Coin-O-Matic, a self-produced collection recorded at their home studio. The album delves into Rhode Island stories where working class life intersects with the shadow of organized crime, turning those contrasts into vivid songs about hardship, loss, redemption, and persistence. It follows Emotional Contracts, which Uncut named among 2023’s standout releases. The title references a cigarette vending company tied to Raymond Patriarca and Providence’s Federal Hill, setting the tone for vignettes that blend personal memory with carefully crafted fiction. Songs on the record include Dog Years, Mary Singletary, ACI, Exit Door, Everything Born, and the closing Candy Cigarettes, touching on aging, faith, incarceration, homecoming, parenthood, and lifelong love. Guest contributors on the album include Steve Berlin of Los Lobos on baritone saxophone and former member Rob Crowell on organ, helping capture a charged, in-the-room energy.

Tortoise

Tortoise has been celebrated as one of the most influential groups of the past forty years, shaping contemporary music with a sound that draws from many directions without settling into just one. Before coming together, its members played in bands such as Eleventh Dream Day, Bastro, Slint, and Poster Children, and later explored projects including Isotope 217, Chicago Underground, and Brokeback. This broad history feeds a style that moves freely across ideas while refusing to be defined by any single approach. Formed in Chicago, the lineup features Jeff Parker, Dan Bitney, Douglas McCombs, John Herndon, and John McEntire. Since 1990 they have released seven albums, with landmarks like Millions Now Living Will Never Die, TNT, and Standards marking distinct phases in a steady, intuitive evolution. Early on they were recognized as leaders in the emerging post-rock movement, and their music has been described as engaging and exploratory, inviting listeners in while still presenting a challenge. On stage, Tortoise thrives in real time. Critics highlight their performances as both technically sharp and playfully open to new sounds, often noting the group’s reputation as a compelling live act. The five-piece is led by singer and bandleader Cliff Gelina, whose rugged vocals draw comparisons to Chris Stapleton. Cody Howe brings agile, expressive guitar work in the spirit of Tony Rice, Sam Acus ignites the mandolin, Amanda Gelina holds down bass while sharing lead and harmony vocals, and Steven Peterson adds banjo and harmonies. Recognized as an IBMA Showcase act in 2022 and covered by Bluegrass Unlimited, The Bluegrass Standard, Nashville Voyager Magazine, and Bluegrass Today, the band recorded its first album, Hangovers & Heartaches, in Studio A at Blackbird Studios in Nashville. Their song Stones was written and sung by Cliff with harmony from his sister Amanda, reflecting siblings who grew up playing bluegrass in the Gelina Family Band. Amanda performed with Breakin’ Strings for about 15 years and later rejoined the lineup. On stage they range from hard-driving grooves to reflective ballads, shaping dynamic sets filled with original material, spirited instrumentals, strong lead vocals, and tight harmonies. Save Ferris

This all-ages concert spotlights Save Ferris, a cornerstone of third wave ska that took shape in Orange County in 1995. Mixing ska, punk, and rock with Monique Powell’s powerful vocals, the band built early momentum at house parties and local venues before a breakout when KROQ’s Rodney Bingenheimer began playing their version of Dexys Midnight Runners’ "Come on Eileen," which soon moved into regular station rotation. After winning a Grammy showcase for best unsigned band, with Epic Records’ David Massey among the judges, they signed to Epic, reissued the Introducing Save Ferris EP, released the debut album It Means Everything, followed with Modified, and spent years touring worldwide. After a hiatus that began in 2003, Powell became an in-demand studio vocalist, contributing to releases by The Used, Goldfinger, Foxy Shazam, Lost Prophets, Mest, and Hilary Duff. In 2015, following a successful neck surgery, she revived Save Ferris with a new lineup, returning to a sold-out night at the Pacific Amphitheater and a massive Santa Monica Pier show later released on vinyl. A fan-funded EP, Checkered Past, arrived with production by John Avila of Oingo Boingo and a guest appearance from Neville Staple of The Specials. The group went on to perform on the main stage of the 2017 Warped Tour, headline shows, and play festivals around the world. Work is underway on the first new full-length in nearly two decades, and recent performances highlight Powell’s commanding stage presence and the band’s lively, crowd-pleasing energy.

Brown Horse

This all ages event spotlights Brown Horse as they return with their third album, Total Dive. The Norwich, UK band presents its most assured work yet, highlighting thoughtful lyrics and a confident musical approach. Stepping away from earlier playfulness, the record moves into darker territory with steady optimism. With songs by Patrick Turner, Nyle Holihan, Emma Tovell, and Rowan Braham, the writing traces small awakenings and difficult changes. The sound shifts between searing intensity and gentle contemplation, pausing to notice the grit and grace of everyday moments. Their music lands between the spare country rock associated with Uncle Tupelo, the intimate edge of early Cat Power, and the shadowed vistas of Magnolia Electric Co., while embracing the bold, noisy spirit of alt rock touchstones like Built to Spill and The Breeders. Norwich drummer Ben Rodwell and Leeds-based musician Neve Cariad add drive and harmony, supporting a group fully in stride. These songs carry wide Norfolk skies, long miles on the road, flashes of heartbreak and humor, and the quiet of in-between places. Total Dive has earned praise from NPR Music’s All Songs Considered, a 9 out of 10 Album of the Month nod from Uncut, enthusiastic comparisons in Paste, and commendation from No Depression. Earlier releases have also been widely recognized, with All the Right Weaknesses receiving strong notices from Uncut, No Expectations, PopMatters, and Mojo, and Reservoir drawing high marks from Uncut, Mojo, the Sunday Times, and the Times.
