Hillary Behrman in conversation with Maria McLeod- Lake Effect

Village Books in Fairhaven hosts a reading and conversation with Pacific Northwest author Hillary Behrman, featuring her debut short story collection, Lake Effect, with writer and journalism professor Maria McLeod joining the discussion. Spanning settings from Seattle to Istanbul and moving through rugged mountains, vivid cityscapes, and desert edges, these stories follow characters navigating love, work, and the distances that can grow between people. Paula’s waking life blurs with dreams, Oliver wrestles with family lore as he builds a relationship with Daniel, siblings Alex and Marcie are bound together and tested across the years from youthful mischief to a birth that goes terribly wrong, and Miles searches for his mother in a camp tucked beneath a tangle of freeways. The collection lingers where solitude and intense bonds meet, asking how far care can reach and where it falls short. Lake Effect received the Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction, selected by Lauren Groff, and has earned praise from both Groff and Nina McConigley for its craft, empathy, and sense of adventure. Behrman’s stories have appeared in journals and magazines, in short story dispensers, and in anthologies, and her work has been noted for its humanity and unsettling power. She lives and writes in the Pacific Northwest, having raised two children and worked as a children’s civil rights lawyer and public defender. McLeod’s poetry and prose have been widely published in the United States and abroad, she has received multiple literary prizes and nominations, and her books include the poetry chapbooks Skin. Hair. Bones. and Mother Want.

The learning environment is designed to be inclusive, welcoming individual goals within a shared group practice. Support is offered for deepening in sensing, movement, theory, and somatic integration to expand perspectives on dance and what a body can be. The June book club at Northwest Yarns & Mercantile spotlights Crafting for Sinners by Jenny Kiefer, a horror tale that asks how dangerous a craft store can become. When the staff catches her and she finds herself locked inside, survival depends on whatever tools and materials she can grab from the aisles. The discussion centers on themes of queer identity, the reach of religious and corporate power, the manipulation of fear, the resilience of chosen family, and the inventive ways crafting know-how can be turned toward self-defense.

Poetry Readings with Ted McMahon, Jed Myers, & T. Clear

Village Books in Fairhaven hosts an evening of poetry with Seattle writers Ted McMahon, Jed Myers, and T. Clear. Ted McMahon’s Visitations draws on Buddhist perspectives and on dreamwork and archetypal ideas associated with Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, with poems that move from deep hurt toward compassion. McMahon was born in 1946 to second-generation Irish parents and grew up near Boston in postwar neighborhoods for returning veterans. He studied at Williams College and Duke University School of Medicine, completed a pediatrics residency at what is now Seattle Children’s, and practiced outpatient pediatrics in Eugene and Seattle for several decades. His poems have appeared in The Seattle Review, The Comstock Review, and The Journal of the American Medical Association, among other publications. He is the author of the chapbook First Fire and the collection The Uses of Imperfection, has served as an editor with Floating Bridge Press and the online journal Bracken, and is seeking a publisher for his manuscript Keeping Watch. Jed Myers presents Can’t Be Far, his recently released fourth full-length collection, a book that traces an upriver search for courage. Its title poem honors Alexei Navalny and points to a bravery that asks us to face difficult truths, speak clearly even when it is resisted, acknowledge our own failings, and refuse complicity in the mistreatment of others. The poems suggest that the wellspring of such resolve is close at hand, in the human heart. Myers has worked across many roles, including writer, musician, psychiatrist in therapeutic practice, teacher, essayist, photographer, literary editor, and father of three. He walks the wetlands near his Seattle home and often takes part in collaborations that weave music and poetry. He is married to writer and theater-maker Alina Rios. T. Clear shares Egg Money, her second book from MoonPath Press, a lyrical yet unsentimental collection that follows the small, persistent labors that sustain a life. Beneath the imagery of the chicken coop lie metaphors for racism, poverty, food insecurity, and ecological crisis, as well as a sharp look at the stratifications of modern society, seen through encounters with chickens, rats, household pets, and people. Moving between domestic work and environmental decline, these poems imagine hen tending as both livelihood and vocation, and they ask how we measure worth when the survival of animals, land, love, and self is at stake. Clear is a founder of Floating Bridge Press, an associate editor at Bracken Magazine, and a facilitator of Easy Speak Seattle. Her first full-length book, A House, Undone, received the 2022 Sally Albiso Award from MoonPath Press.

Jess Janz- The Table Where We Meet

At Village Books in Fairhaven, Jess Janz leads a conversation about belonging and curiosity, drawing on surprising insights from sharing meals with more than a thousand strangers. Her book, The Table Where We Meet, collects stories and reflections from hosting these dinners and offers practical, tender essays on building real connection, asking better questions, and taking the risk of being truly seen. Roberta Kwok - Lost in Curiosity

Author Roberta Kwok appears at Village Books in Fairhaven to share insights from her new book, Lost in Curiosity, an inside look at how scientific discovery really happens. Rather than a single flash of inspiration, the conversation explores a demanding, sometimes messy search for truth, following researchers through setbacks and progress in labs and in the field. Examples include working through heavy snowfall on a glacier in remote Greenland, scouring Borneo’s rainforest for a hard-to-find frog, and racing to capture faint signals from a distant moon beyond our solar system. The focus is on devoted scientists and restless minds pursuing nature’s puzzles without knowing where the evidence will lead. Kwok is a science writer whose reporting has appeared in the New York Times, the New Yorker, Nature, New Scientist, Audubon, and other publications. Her work has been recognized with a Knight Science Journalism fellowship at MIT, a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and awards from the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Geophysical Union. Luciana Navarro Powell- Squirrel Draws Big Feelings

This free, family-friendly gathering features local illustrator Luciana Navarro Powell, the creator behind Squirrel Draws Big Feelings, and includes a hands-on chalk art activity. Through the characters Squirrel, Porcupine, and Bear, the book explores what it feels like when emotions run high and how creativity can offer calm. As the story unfolds, Squirrel channels big feelings into chalk drawings, and friends who are unsure at first discover that making art together, sharing, and friendship can help. With rhyming text and lively mixed-media artwork, the book encourages readers to express themselves even when words are hard to find. Registration is requested to help anticipate audience size. Powell is an award-winning illustrator who started her career in Brazil, moved to the United States in 2002, and now lives in Washington state. She has illustrated more than twenty children’s books and enjoys hiking with her family in the Pacific Northwest.

Kathleen Schwab- Queenswood

Village Books in Fairhaven welcomes Kathleen Schwab with her debut novel, Queenswood, a romantasy rooted in fae lore. Set in twelfth century Ireland, the story follows Rhiannon, a noble daughter who watches suitors compete for her dowry while the tenants on her family’s lands bear the cost of wedding preparations. Unwilling to play the marriage game, she considers a convent where books and learning would shape her days, even if it means turning away from mortal romance. In the realm of Faerie, Angus, the crown prince, was raised within the Queenswood, an ancient enchanted forest that sustains the woodlands of both worlds. He favors roaming the wilds over court life, but as his mother weakens and the Queenswood sheds its leaves in sorrow, duty sends him to the human world to seek a maiden who can become the next Queen of Faerie. Schwab grew up in Levittown, Pennsylvania, holds a bachelor’s degree in literature and a master’s in teaching from Smith College, and has worked as an office manager, a midwife’s assistant, and a professional homeschooling teacher while raising two spirited children and caring for a flock of parrots.

Snoqualmie Bike Nonstop

The third edition of Snoqualmie Bike Nonstop presents a sweeping Pacific Northwest loop for riders who want Cascades grandeur without hike a bike. The course starts and finishes in Bellingham and covers roughly 546 miles, crossing the range twice on the Snoqualmie side before a closing spin around Whidbey Island to complete the circuit. Built as a mostly rideable, self-supported ultra, the route links paved roads, forest roads, rail trails, and quiet connectors. About three quarters of the mileage is on pavement, with the remainder on gravel, dirt, and other mixed surfaces. Expect rainforest passes, transitions between valleys, Snoqualmie area trails and tunnels, and coastal miles scented with salt air on Whidbey. Riders follow the official GPS course. Live tracking is required, with the Ride Yr Bike app as the primary option and Garmin inReach or SPOT also acceptable. Tracking supports safety, route verification, and a public map for dot watchers and friends. The style is strictly self supported. No outside assistance, no private caches, and no support crews are permitted, with commercial resupply only. Treat it as one continuous stage from the mass start to the finish, and leave no trace to respect rural communities and trail corridors. This is aimed at riders seeking a longer, wilder Washington loop without committing to a multi state point to point. Plan for sustained effort and real mountain weather, and select gear for mixed surfaces, such as a relatively smooth tire around 35 mm rather than a delicate road racing setup. Entry is 65 USD and includes Ride Yr Bike app tracker setup and roster listing.
