Level 2: Intermediate Level Social Tango

Take social tango beyond the basics in an intermediate-level class that builds confidence, vocabulary, and quality of movement. Instruction is led by Matt Doval, who has danced Argentine tango since 2011 and taught regularly since 2018, with guidance in both leading and following in close and open embrace. Assistance is provided by May Vang. Participants should already be comfortable with fundamentals such as a steady walk, the cross, front and back ochos, turns to the left, and working in both parallel and cross systems. Each week introduces a sequence that broadens what your body understands is possible, with an emphasis on partner connection, flow, balance, body mechanics, creative pathways, and musicality. Everyone learns both roles, partners rotate, and any gender may dance with any gender. Drop-ins are welcome, and a partner is not required. Students from the prior class are invited to stay for the next session at no additional cost. The environment prioritizes safety, respect, and inclusive community, nurturing long-term dance relationships and deep human connection. Comfortable clothing is recommended, along with smooth-soled shoes that slide easily; socks can work if needed. Pricing options include a drop-in rate of $20, with a $17 student rate. A package of 10 classes usable within 100 days is available for $160, with a $140 student option. A current student ID is required for the discount, and unused classes expire after 100 days. Level 1: Fundamentals of Social Tango

Learn the essentials of Argentine social tango in a welcoming class that blends clear instruction with a strong sense of connection and individuality. The course is led by Matt Doval, who has danced since 2011 and taught regularly since 2018, and he teaches both leading and following in close and open embrace. Instruction is often supported by assistant teacher May Vang to demonstrate movements and offer individualized feedback. The curriculum cycles through five core sequences that build fundamental skills, including backward ochos, going to the cross in cross system, the ocho cortado, a rock step turn to the left that flows into backward ochos, and a left turn from backward ochos that returns to parallel system. With each rotation through these ideas, participants refine technique and confidence. About every sixth week, the group revisits the Basic Eight as a friendly check-in on progress and musicality. Everyone learns both roles, and any gender may partner with any gender. Rotations give dancers the chance to work with multiple partners, which supports role balance and better social dancing. The learning environment emphasizes respect, safety, and human connection, with an eye toward building dance relationships that last. Comfortable clothing and smooth, non-sticky soles are recommended, and socks can be a workable option. Pricing includes a $15 drop-in choice or a prepaid option of six weeks within 60 days for $72, with a student rate of $62 for the same package when presenting a current student ID. Cash, check, Venmo, and PayPal are accepted. To register or ask questions, email mattdoval@mac.com or text 509-290-8138. Private lessons are available by appointment for $50 per hour, or five lessons within 50 days for $200 prepaid. Consistent practice outside of class greatly supports improvement, and thoughtful hygiene is appreciated so the close embrace remains comfortable for everyone, including avoiding fragrances that transfer to clothing.
