A talk on Trygve Ager: Newsman, Author, Translator

Ella Fossum and Tryg Ager share how their father, Trygve Ager, carried forward the legacy of his father, Waldemar Ager, in sustaining and celebrating Norwegian heritage. The conversation takes place at L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library and is free to attend. Trygve Ager’s life spanned journalism, translation, public service, and education. Born in Eau Claire in 1906, he graduated from St. Olaf College in 1929 and studied journalism in Norway that same year through a Scandinavian-American Foundation fellowship. He worked as a copy editor for Nordisk Tidende in Brooklyn and for a small newspaper in Tenafly, New Jersey. In the 1930s he translated several books, including O. E. Rolvag’s Their Father’s God, Johan Boyer’s The House and Sea, and Waldemar Ager’s Sons of the Old Country. He later worked in advertising with Addison Vars Inc. in Buffalo, joined the Norwegian Embassy in Washington in 1941, helped launch News of Norway, and in 1943 co-authored The Fight of the Norwegian Church Against Nazism with Bjarne Hoye. After leaving the embassy in 1945, he joined the Albert Lea Evening Tribune and became managing editor, moved to the Minneapolis Tribune in 1949, reported on Wisconsin until 1967, and then served as a copy editor before retiring in 1971. In retirement he taught Norwegian language and culture at the district vocational school in E.C., edited a district insert for the Lutheran Standard, served on the library board in E.C. for many years, led the local chapter of Nordmanns Forbundet, and sat on the board of the Wisconsin Institute of Scandinavian Culture. He died in 1975.

The evening features a social hour, beverages, and a dinner catered by Fosters, with time to connect with friends and fellow supporters. The cost is $130 per person, which includes a $100 tax-deductible contribution. The aim is to welcome about 130 guests and raise between $12,000 and $15,000 in a positive, enjoyable setting.

Adults Only Skate Night - The 2nd Saturday of Each Month

Spend the evening skating in an adults-only setting designed for guests ages 18 and up. Admission is $7 per person and skate rentals are included if needed. Requests are welcome and the playlist covers favorites from the 70s through today. Some sessions feature special themes for added fun. Examples include Neon is Nice, where the first 50 guests receive glowsticks and a portion of ticket and concession sales supports PBS Wisconsin. Other past themes have included a decades night where dressing for the 70s, 80s, or 90s influences the music, an emo throwback with random prizes, and a 90s celebration with retro pricing. Alcohol is not allowed and those who appear to be under the influence will be denied entry. Concessions are available, but outside food and drinks are prohibited and any water bottle must be empty upon arrival. Early entry is not offered and no one may stay beyond the ticketed end, and everyone must pay to enter the building. The venue uses theatrical lighting and haze, including intense lights and strobe effects on the rink and in the arcade, so guests with light sensitivities or epilepsy should use caution and enter at their own risk. Skating and play are at your own risk under Wisconsin law, and times, packages, and prices may change without notice.
