Barboursville Park32nd Annual Scholarship Fundraising Banquet
The Carter G. Woodson Memorial Foundation, Inc. hosts its 32nd annual scholarship fundraising banquet in Huntington, West Virginia, taking place in the Don Morris Room of the Marshall University Student Center. The evening features keynote remarks from Angela P. Dodson, an accomplished author, editor, and CEO of Editorsoncall LLC. A veteran journalist, she held senior roles at The New York Times and previously worked with the Washington Star and the Louisville Courier-Journal. Her books include Remember the Ladies, and she is the editor of the anthology We Refuse to Be Silent. Her forthcoming title, We’ve Been Here Before, was co-authored with her late husband, Michael Days. Her career also includes serving as executive editor of Black Issues Book Review and hosting the award-winning radio program Black Catholics, Yes! A Beckley, West Virginia native, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Marshall University and a master’s from American University, helped establish the Dodson, Dotson, and Hairston scholarship for underprivileged students from southern West Virginia, and received the Trailblazer Award from the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists. Reserved tickets are a $40 donation per person, with eight-seat corporate tables available for $400, and additional contributions are welcome. Proceeds support academic scholarships and advance the vision for a Black History and Civil Rights History Museum in Huntington’s Fairfield community through restoration of the Memphis Tennessee Garrison home. Tickets may be obtained from a board member or through the Zeffy fundraising platform. Cultural entertainment is supported in part by the Appalachian Freedom Heritage Initiative, a project of the Appalachian Regional Commission, and the banquet is sponsored by the Huntington-Tri-State Branch of ASALH, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.

Tri-State Arts Association is holding a spring jury session for prospective new members at the Huntington Museum of Art. Artists from West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky who are 18 or older may apply by submitting five original works in a single medium with a brief artist statement, along with a $35 nonrefundable jury fee due at drop off; payment is accepted in cash or by check made out to TSAA. Artwork should be professionally presented, with paintings framed and works on paper both matted and framed, other media suitably finished, and all two dimensional pieces fitted with hanging wires. The jury evaluates originality, effective design, use of color and value, unity and harmony, and overall craftsmanship. Drop off and pick up take place in Studio 2 behind the museum; to reach the studio, drive to the right of the main parking lot and continue past the open gate. TSAA supports local artists by encouraging them to create, improve, and share their work with the public. Members work across painting, drawing, glass, mixed media, glasswork, pen and ink, photography, pottery, printmaking, sculpture, fiber and textiles, and woodcarving, and benefits include opportunities to display and sell art at Art in the Park at Ritter Park, discounts for local framing and printing, inclusion in TSAA organized events, and camaraderie with fellow artists.

Marshall Health Network is offering free oral cancer screenings for the public at the Marshall University Medical Center Atrium. These screenings support early detection and are intended for adults, including those who may not have regular access to dental care. Appointments are encouraged and can be arranged through the Edwards Cancer Institute. Most adults 20 and older are advised to be screened at least once a year, and those at higher risk, such as tobacco users, heavy alcohol consumers, and people with a family history of cancer, may need them more frequently. Although many routine dental visits include an oral cancer screening, this community event provides an additional opportunity to be evaluated.

At West Edge Factory, a community-centered May Day gathering highlights the history and legacy of the West Virginia Mine Wars through art, music, and storytelling. Twelve digital portraits by Sassa Wilkes of pivotal figures from that era anchor the evening and serve as studies for SOLIDARITY, a large community mural in progress. Guests can view the artwork, help paint sections of the mural on polytab fabric, and take in a poetry reading. The program features an artist talk by Sassa Wilkes and a presentation on the history of May Day from Kenzie New Walker, Executive Director of the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum. Live music by Thomas Jude and Matt Mullins, plus a special appearance by Huntington’s community marching band Hoot & Holler, rounds out the celebration. Admission is free for all ages, and refreshments will be available. SOLIDARITY is a year-long public art initiative in Huntington that blends portraiture, historical imagery, and shared community stories to explore labor history and Appalachian identity through themes of unity, resistance, and collective power. Painted on polytab panels that can be completed off-site and then adhered together, the mural invites participation from people of all ages and skill levels and will be permanently installed on a 120-foot wall at West Edge Factory. Its imagery honors the Mine Wars and reclaims the word redneck in its original labor context of red bandanas as a sign of unity, with a goal of engaging 1,000 community members so the finished work reflects many voices. Once complete, it will serve as a lasting public artwork and educational landmark for Huntington.

This second annual 5K, presented by the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, supports medical student health, physical activity, and wellbeing. The course begins at the lake, follows the soccer field road, crosses the bridge, continues a half mile to the right to a turnaround, then returns to the lake to finish. Auditions are open to dancers ages 7 and up, and this session is designated for ages 7 to 12. A mandatory Parent Information Meeting will be held at True Impact Dance Studio. Students do not need to be members of the studio to audition for group roles, but all participants must follow the rehearsal schedule. A $25 audition fee applies to non-members. He is a Professor of Art at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia, where he has taught Ceramics and Sculpture for more than two decades and has overseen the building of both permanent and experimental ceramic kilns. Since 2004 he has directed the Arthur Butcher Art Gallery in the Alexander Fine Arts Center and led the visiting artist program that brings free demonstrations by nationally recognized ceramic artists to Athens while fostering international exchange. His practice centers on ceramics and draws on Appalachian life through sculpture and functional forms, with work shown in exhibitions at both national and local levels. Robby Moore, born and based in Beckley, West Virginia, is a mixed media artist with a Bachelor of Art in Studio Arts and a minor in Theatre from Concord University. Active since 1999 as an exhibitor and curator, he is also a theatrical director and has worked professionally as a scenic designer and artist, costumer, actor, technician, and marionette puppeteer. He serves as West Virginia’s first Arts Extension Educator for West Virginia Creative Network and WVSU Extension Service. His work has appeared in venues including the Juliet Art Museum, Marshall School of Art and Design, West Liberty University, The Huntington Museum, Carnegie Hall, Morehead University, and Concord University. Moore layers accessible techniques and materials to build patina, honoring Appalachian traditions of resourcefulness, ingenuity, saving, and nostalgia. Using theatrical language, coded symbols, and memories from southern West Virginia, he creates crafted objects presented as paintings, with current themes exploring isolation, obligation, time, and celebration.

Celebrating its tenth year, this 5K supports Safe Harbor of Northeast KY, an organization working to end domestic violence with a focus on prevention, education, and intervention. The route follows the City of Ashland Central Park course, starting in the heart of the park and finishing at Crabbe Elementary School. Registration is offered at tiered rates of 25, 30, and 35 dollars based on when you register, and every participant who signs up is guaranteed a race shirt.
