Self-Directed Community Forum - Self-Advocates & Family Members

Anchorage Self-Directed Community Forum explores how self-directed services can expand choice, flexibility, and independence for Alaskans. In a self-directed model, participants choose their supports and providers, and decide how and when services are delivered. The forum features two sessions designed for different audiences. One centers on families and self-advocates, including individuals with disabilities, elders, relatives, and supporters, who will share experiences, needs, and ideas about what self-directed services could look like in Alaska. The other is for service providers, care coordinators, and related professionals to discuss opportunities, challenges, and ways self-direction can support person-centered care across the state. Feedback gathered at this event will help shape the future of self-directed services in Alaska.

38th Annual Mark Eliason 3-Club Scramble Golf Classic

This golf classic features a scramble that puts strategy at the forefront, with each player limited to three clubs for the entire round. A putter may be purchased as an add on, and mulligans and string are also available. Entry is $1,400 per foursome or $350 per golfer, and the package covers green fees, cart rental, a player gift, breakfast, admission to the awards banquet, and chances to win additional prizes. On the green, putts are taken from the exact chosen position and must be holed unless string is used. Short teams of two or three will rotate swings to cover missing players. The highest score allowed on any hole is double bogey. Course marshals will monitor pace, with a limit of 15 minutes per hole for each team, and may add a one stroke penalty if play is delaying the field. 2026 CMBR Youth Bike Checks

Free youth bike safety checks take place at Mirror Lake Park with volunteer coaches and mechanics on hand to help. Families can bring children, helmets, and bikes for a friendly inspection. Coaches will look over helmet fit, bike size, tires, wheels, brakes, headset, chain, and shifting. If everything is in good working order, riders receive a medallion to attach to the bike. If simple tuning is needed, mechanics from the Trek Bicycle Store of Anchorage and Off the Chain Bicycle Collective will make basic brake and derailleur adjustments so the bike stops and shifts properly. Bikes that require repairs beyond these adjustments should be taken to a shop before riding with the club, and many shops are booked one to two weeks for repair work. Youth participating in CMBR kids must have a completed safety check before riding with the club. This is not a drop-off event, and a responsible adult must supervise each child for the entire evening. If attending is not possible, a safety check at a shop typically costs $50 to $100. The nonprofit Off the Chain Bicycle Collective is a volunteer-run, donation-based option where adults and kids can learn to repair their own bikes, which can be an affordable alternative for families who cannot make the bike checks.

Book Talk & Author Signing with Kendra Langford Shaw

Alaska-born author Kendra Langford Shaw shares her new novel, The Pillager's Guide to Arctic Pianos, with a reading, a Q and A, and a book signing. The novel follows the Spahr family, descendants of Arctic homesteaders who live off the grid in a converted fisherman’s shack on a fjord reached only by kayak and floatplane, selling pickled octopus and sea crops as glaciers recede and seas rise. When a neighbor retrieves a centuries-old piano from the icy water, a relic from an expedition that once required each household to haul a six-hundred-pound instrument, the intricately carved find becomes a sought-after antique and triggers a boom in piano hunting. The Spahrs join the search, hoping for stability even as the costs add up. Spanning generations from their origins to their descendants, the book explores enduring family ties and the pull of home in a changing Arctic, with appeal for fans of Karen Russell, Maggie Shipstead, and Eowyn Ivey.
