Middle Age Comeback - Night 1 - April 24th

Scared Scriptless Improv welcomes Middle Age Comeback to The Nave Spenard for a night of fully improvised comedy. The duo’s last visit was nearly two decades ago, and they are back for two evenings of shows along with two workshops. Because everything is made up on the spot, each performance will be different. Middle Age Comeback features longtime collaborators Jimmy Carlson and Craig Uhlir in a fast-moving one act. After a five-year run at iO Chicago, they took the show on tour with appearances at UCB New York, OKC Improv, and stages around Michigan, Oklahoma, Alaska, and Texas. Drawing on years of shared instincts and chemistry, they blend quick thinking with playful choices for an unpredictable ride. Jimmy Carlson is an actor, writer, and director with over 30 years of improv experience. A veteran performer and resident director at The Second City Chicago, he toured internationally, directed multiple revues, and received a Jeff Award nomination for Best Director. Screen credits include The Affair (Showtime), How to Get Away with Murder (ABC), and The Mentalist (CBS). He performs in Oklahoma City with The Swamp at OKC Improv, and his feature directorial debut, Drive Through Fire, is currently being shopped for distribution. Craig Uhlir is a former member of The Second City National Touring Company who spent three years in The Second City: Las Vegas at the Flamingo, one of the Strip’s top 10 shows. He is a longtime ensemble member of Deep Schwa, Chicago’s longest-running Harold team, now performing at the Annoyance Theater. His credits include teaching improv internationally and appearances on Chicago Fire (NBC), Utopia (Amazon), and The Surreal Life All-Stars (VH1). Tickets are $25 in advance online and $30 at the door. This is a special event, so coupons and free show passes are not accepted. Online presales close earlier on the day of the show. Adult themes are likely. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Let's Talk Fresh Poetry

At Umoja CoWorking, several contributors to 100 Fresh Alaskan Poems 2026 gather for a book talk centered on the anthology and the voices behind it. Expect readings from the collection, conversation about each poet’s creative path, and opportunities to purchase the book. The anthology brings together 10 poets, each contributing 10 themed pieces to create 100 poems in total, featuring a mix of high school writers, seasoned authors, and poets being published for the first time. The work explores identity, belonging, transformation, and even treats Alaska itself as a character. Special guest Shelby “Mahogany” Wilson, author of Progressive Lines Etched in Time’s Brittle Glass: A Collection of Injustice Poetry (2026), adds another perspective to the program. The series aims to broaden Alaska’s literary landscape by uplifting poets who have often been left out, with new volumes planned every other year, including the next edition in 2028. Edutainment Nite Publishing leads this effort to make room for a wide range of poetic voices across the state.

First Friday

First Friday at Turnagain Ceramics pairs a complimentary community pottery throw with an opening reception for the featured artists. The front gallery highlights handmade work by studio members, ranging from everyday pieces like plates, mugs, and bowls to unique jewelry and sculpture. This edition spotlights Erin Cockreham and Jasmine Woodland. Erin holds a BA in Ceramics and Psychology, spent time as a professional baker, and teaches at Turnagain Ceramics, fostering a kind, welcoming environment for learners of all skill levels. Her pieces emphasize vibrant color, comfortable forms, and strong shapes complemented by thoughtful glazes, often imagined alongside home-cooked meals. Outside the studio she enjoys creative writing and hosting friends. Jasmine is a fourth-generation Alaskan from the Kenai Peninsula who studied environmental science in Anchorage and began creating at Turnagain Ceramics in 2023. Influenced by a background in graphic design and a love of bright, cheerful palettes, she crafts work with bold patterns, dynamic shapes, and botanical motifs, with those themes also appearing in her handmade earrings. 3D Mosaic Mushroom Class

Learn to create a three-dimensional mosaic mushroom in a mixed media class held in the studio. The project begins by mosaicking a wood-turned mushroom form with chipped glass, adding small white marbles for the spots, and decorating the stem with flower beads and leaf tiles. After grouting, finish the piece by applying sand, rocks, and faux moss in resin onto a raw edge wood stand for a sturdy result. Each mushroom measures about five inches tall at the stem and about four inches wide at the cap. Because the mushroom bases are crafted by a wood turner, participation supports multiple artists. Examples made by students in the studio show how the finished pieces can look. It also works as an early Mother’s Day gift idea or a creative outing with a friend.

Beginning Stained Glass Class

Create a six-inch by six-inch stained glass piece using patterns supplied by the studio, with a wide range of glass colors and textures to personalize your design. Pattern suggestions are available from the studio by email upon request. Because the session runs long, comfortable shoes and a snack are recommended. Participants must be 16 or older, and the class is not suitable for anyone who is pregnant or nursing due to material fumes. Safety glasses are required for the entire class, and masks are required during soldering; bring your own safety glasses if you have a pair that fits well. Most students finish their project in one session when they stay focused and minimize phone use. Space is limited, so only registered students may be in the studio. There are no refunds for missed or rescheduled classes, but a replacement who meets the age requirement may attend in your place if the studio is notified with their contact information. Directions will be sent after registration, so please provide a reliable phone number or email to receive important updates.
