Authentic Paella Workshop

An interactive cooking workshop devoted to one of Spain’s most beloved dishes, paella. Led by Chef Fernando, participants learn the techniques, ingredient choices, and professional tips needed to craft an authentic paella at home. The lesson explores developing deep flavor with a traditional sofrito, working confidently with rice, stock, and timing, balancing ingredients and heat, and understanding the science that makes the dish sing. Throughout the evening, everyone cooks together, discovers the traditions surrounding paella, and watches the pan gradually become a celebrated Spanish meal. When the paella is ready, the group sits down to enjoy the results, embracing sobremesa... the unhurried time when a shared table turns into conversation and connection. Upcoming themes include Mediterranean Vegetable Paella, Black Paella (Arroz Negro), and a Seafood Fideuà experience. The class lasts about 2 to 2.5 hours, seating is limited to 16 guests, and the price is $95 per person. At Sobremesa, the gathering continues after the cooking concludes, keeping the focus on food, stories, and community.

Beginners complete three 1K reps with three to four minutes of standing recovery, focusing on even splits and learning the feel of 5K effort. Intermediates take on five 1K reps with 90 seconds of standing rest, keeping the pace steady across all intervals. Advanced participants run six 1K reps with 400 meters of jogging at roughly three-quarter effort between, staying composed as the final reps demand extra focus. Across all groups, the aim is consistent pacing and honest effort.

Experience a full moon releasing ceremony centered on visualizing and letting go of what no longer serves or causes harm. This donation-based community gathering welcomes all ages and all spiritual paths, including those with none, and is designed to be open and inclusive so everyone feels comfortable. The ceremony is held at the Holistic Wellness Center. Most activities take place indoors for comfort, and if the weather allows there will be a short step outside to safely burn written intentions for release. The flow includes a warm welcome, a cleansing with sage or cedar, an acknowledgment of the four elements and Spirit, a guided meditation, a focused releasing and burning segment, and a closing, followed by unstructured time to meet new friends. Contributions are appreciated from those who can give, with a suggested amount of $10 per person or $20 per family. Larger donations help cover the meeting space and ensure that those who cannot pay are still able to attend. Payment can be made in cash at the event or online through the ticket link on the event page. Please bring paper and a pen or pencil.

May Day Spring Spirits Interactive Ghost Hunt

An interactive ghost hunt and guided tour unfolds at the Historic Lowry House in Huntsville, combining history with a real paranormal investigation of the home and its grounds. TV personality, paranormal investigator, and psychic medium Lesley Ann Hyde leads the Southern Ghost Girls Tours & Paranormal Investigations team, and attendees take an active role using state-of-the-art equipment provided at no additional charge. Built in the 1840s, the house is known for Civil War history and connections to the Underground Railroad. Stories tied to the site include a tragic romance linked to a Lady in White often associated with a front bedroom. Past reports describe a full-bodied butler in the kitchen, sightings of Ms. Anne Lowry in a window and on the stairs, experiences attributed to Mr. Brown, a shadowy figure moving across the floor, disembodied screams and voices, and an earring that vanished then later flew across a restroom. Some accounts also suggest unmarked graves on the property. The team is the only group in the Southeast to use a Victorian era tipping table, offering another method for attempted communication. A portion of proceeds supports preservation of the house. Policies include no refunds for no shows and the possibility of a credit when the organizer receives at least 24 hours notice of cancellation.

Boléro

A vivid orchestral program centers on Ravel’s Boléro from 1928, a work that has sparked debate even as it entrances with sinuous modal lines, saxophones that seem to sing, and the pulse of Spanish dance rhythms. Its sonic tapestry grows from insistent repetition into a sweeping climax, which the composer once playfully described as essentially one long crescendo. Sharing the spotlight are Rachmaninov’s ever-popular Symphonic Dances and Alberto Ginastera’s Variaciones concertantes, where a lyrical idea for cello and harp journeys through the orchestra, letting different voices step forward in turn.

An Afternoon with Meg Shaffer

An author discussion and signing at the Downtown Huntsville Public Library spotlights Meg Shaffer’s new novel, The Book Witch, a celebratory nod to the joy of reading from the USA Today bestselling author of The Wishing Game. The story centers on Rainy March, a third-generation Book Witch who protects fiction from tampering. With a magical umbrella and a feline companion, she steps into novels to mend distorted plots and temper unruly protagonists, yet her order’s rules insist that real people remain in the real world. Eating, drinking, or sleeping inside a story risks becoming part of it, and romance with fictional characters is forbidden. Those rules clash with her feelings for the Duke of Chicago, a British sleuth from her favorite mysteries, since being found with him again could mean expulsion from her coven and the loss of her gifts. When her grandfather goes missing and a priceless book is stolen, she turns to the Duke, and their search carries them through the worlds of Alice in Wonderland, King Arthur, and other classics where hidden enemies and family secrets await. Meg Shaffer is also the author of The Lost Story and The Wishing Game, which was a Book of the Month finalist for Book of the Year, appeared on best-of-the-year lists from Reader’s Digest and the Washington Post, and has been translated into 21 languages. She holds an MFA in TV and Screenwriting from Stephens College and lives in Kentucky with her husband and two cats who do not write.

An Evening with Rea Frey

South Huntsville Public Library presents a conversation with Rea Frey about her novel Dear Mother, joined by fellow bestselling author Sarah Crouch, with a signing to follow. Tickets are available at $10 for event entry or $20 for entry plus a copy of Dear Mother. Set in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, Dear Mother follows investigative journalist Isabelle Archer as she returns to Cedarloch after her estranged mother’s death to confront the long shadow of a childhood tragedy. At thirteen, Isabelle lost her three foster siblings in a fire ruled accidental, yet doubts have lingered for decades. Back at her former home, unease settles in as new autopsy findings raise fresh questions. With help from her ex, she searches for the truth about the blaze and her mother’s death, uncovering secrets that threaten everything she thought she knew. Rea Frey is an award-winning author of several nonfiction works and the novels Not Her Daughter, Because You’re Mine, Until I Find You, and Secrets of Our House. She is the founder and CEO of Writeway, which guides writers on the business side of publishing as well as craft, and she lives in Nashville with her husband and daughter. Sarah Crouch is a USA TODAY bestselling author of Middletide and The Briars, literary thrillers grounded in the Pacific Northwest where she was raised, and she is also known as a professional marathon runner.

HARDY: THE COUNTRY! COUNTRY! TOUR! | Huntsville, AL

HARDY brings The Country! Country! Tour to Huntsville with a sound that is loud, rooted, and straight from America’s heartland. Raised in the small town of Philadelphia, Mississippi, he blends swampy rock textures with country grit, turning stories from farms and backwoods life into anthems. His four song EP This Ole Boy showcased his range, gritty on 4x4, soulful on the title track, and sharp with stacked harmonies on Rednecker, all tied together by quick wordplay and a sharp sense of humor. Before stepping fully into the spotlight, he made a name for himself in Nashville’s writing rooms, co writing the Morgan Wallen and Florida Georgia Line collaboration Up Down, Florida Georgia Line’s Simple, and Seth Ennis’s Call Your Mama. Encouragement from collaborators including Tyler Hubbard and producer Joey Moi helped move his music from the bus to major stages, where enthusiastic crowd reactions solidified the path forward. Shaped by Mississippi roots and a love of classic rock that began on drives to the family chicken farm with his dad, HARDY delivers country storytelling with a Southern rock edge and blue collar vocals. The show centers on small town spirit, big sound, and a style that keeps evolving while staying true to where it started.

Botanical Bookworms • Celebrating Conservation and E.O. Wilson

A community of readers, nature lovers, and curious minds comes together for lively conversations, educational insights, and guided walks in the Garden. Each gathering highlights nature-focused books from different genres, encouraging thoughtful discussion and a deeper connection to the natural world. This session honors the legacy of Edward Osborne Wilson, born June 10, 1929 in Birmingham, Alabama, a renowned biologist, naturalist, ecologist, and entomologist whose conservation work and writing have inspired many. Bill Finch, Founding Director of The Paint Rock Forest Research Center, will share experiences from working with E. O. Wilson. There is only one session for May. Featured reading includes Anthill: A Novel, Tales from the Ant World, and Letters to a Young Scientist, all by E. O. Wilson. Attendance is welcome whether participants have completed one title or all of them. As a nonprofit, the Garden directs proceeds from events and programs to conservation initiatives and mission-driven work.

Board Gamer Make & Play Camp

At Rocket City Lasers, this weeklong camp centers on both playing and designing tabletop games. Participants explore formats like card, dice, strategy, quiz, and situational games while discovering how rules and gameplay shape an engaging experience. Days are organized into focused learning blocks of roughly 60 to 90 minutes, with breaks, lunch, and additional enrichment included. The suggested age range is 9 to 13, and an extended pickup option is available at checkout. Students collaborate in small groups to brainstorm ideas, share resources, and support one another through the full design process. They test each other’s prototypes, exchange feedback, and work together to solve design challenges, which builds community and teamwork. The program blends mathematics for probabilities and scoring, art for boards and pieces, and language arts for clear rules and storytelling, connecting classroom subjects to real-world creation. Each camper receives blank boards, cards, and other components to develop a prototype to take home and share with family. The experience also explores how game design relates to broader fields such as game development, education, and marketing, and how games can reflect real-life situations, teach useful skills, and bring people together.
