His solo rise followed writing and background vocals for artists including Usher, Christopher Williams, and Al B. Sure, then a discovery by Russell Simmons that led to a Def Jam deal. His 1996 debut introduced the hit Touch Me, Tease Me featuring Foxy Brown and Mary J. Blige.
