Ghost Songs: A New Folk Musical

Los Angeles · Indie Shakes Studio, 3191 Casitas Ave

An intimate, world premiere chamber musical from David Melville unfolds at Indie Shakes Studio, set a few decades after Shakespeare’s life. A curious Puritan teenager named Cat discovers a trunk of forbidden writings, and with the worldly insight of Agnes, her housemaid newly returned from the American Colony, she falls for the passion, poetry, and drama of Shakespeare’s words. When those cherished texts face destruction, the two weigh whether to defy family, country, and faith to safeguard the plays that have captured their hearts. Created with music, book, and lyrics by David Melville and directed by Leonora Pitts, the production features Christie Coran as Agnes and Jennifer Hardy as Cat, with stage management by Kaitlyn Chaidez. Ghost Songs delves into censorship, bravery, and the spellbinding power of art.

Hallowe'en Day Evergreen Cemetery, 1877 Walking Tour

Los Angeles · Evergreen Cemetery, 311 N Evergreen Ave

Travel back to 1877, when Los Angeles was a modest community of 10,000 poised for a real estate boom, and discover how civic-minded residents in Boyle Heights established Evergreen, the city’s oldest cemetery, a 67 acre burial ground meant to grow with the city. This immersive walking tour with Esotouric at Evergreen Cemetery follows the story from its founding to today, introducing the people who shaped both this ethnically diverse, non-denominational resting place and Los Angeles, including families such as Lankershim, Hollenbeck, Van Nuys, Bixby, and Workman, along with many others among 300,000 burials. Along the way, view early monuments carved by local stonecutters and an uncommon signed memorial, notice a lucky lizard, a hidden maiden, and a pink tiger that seems to prance, descend into the Chinese Shrine, and walk to the shoreline of the lost Crystal Lake. The narrative is grounded in newly found, previously unpublished documents and includes rare photographs that can be viewed on a smartphone.

    Desire

    Los Angeles · Lodge Room, 104 N Ave 56

An evening of synth-pop and shadowy atmospheres unfolds with sets by Desire, MOTHERMARY, and Johnny Jewel. Desire, formed by vocalist Megan Louise alongside producer and composer Johnny Jewel, emerged in 2008 and has since shaped a lush world of glossy synths, heart-on-sleeve melodies, and dance floor melancholy. Their song “Under Your Spell,” featured in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, brought their sound to a wide audience, and their influence has echoed through fashion houses such as Dior, Chanel, Max Mara, and Bottega Veneta. Their music bridges dream-pop, Italo disco, and noir-tinged aesthetics, and they continue to create while working toward a fourth album. MOTHERMARY, the identical twins Elyse and Larena Winn, channel a past marked by strict religious upbringing into a potent mix of synth-pop, darkwave, and subversive devotion. After leaving the church and moving from New York’s underground to Los Angeles, they released the debut album I Am Your God on Italians Do It Better. Expect 1980s drum machines, cinematic synth textures, gothic sheen, and entwined vocals that turn confession into dance floor release. Their performances feel like ritual, balancing intimacy and spectacle with a blend of club energy and reverent imagery. Composer and producer Johnny Jewel, founder of Italians Do It Better and a guiding force behind Chromatics, Glass Candy, and Desire, rounds out the bill. His work spans film and television, including Drive and Bronson, Ryan Gosling’s Lost River, Fien Troch’s Home, and David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return, with fashion collaborations for Chanel, Dior, and Bottega Veneta. Recent scoring for Holly expanded his glacial ambience and glowing melodies. On stage he weaves analog synthesizers, film projections, and expansive soundscapes into a live experience that places the audience inside a cinematic sound world.

    Sabor a Yucatán – Vaporcitos

Los Angeles · LA Cocina de Gloria Molina

Explore the flavors of Yucatán by learning how to make vaporcitos, petite and tender steamed tamales from southern Mexico. This hands-on class focuses on creating corn masa parcels filled with ground pork seasoned with achiote recado, an annatto seed paste, tucked into banana leaves, and finished with a simple tomato sauce. Guest chef Dora Herrera of YUCA'S leads the instruction and shares insights from a family tradition that spans decades. Recognized by the James Beard Foundation with an America’s Classics honor, Herrera is the daughter of Socorro Herrera, who launched YUCA'S in 1976 to celebrate Yucatán cooking. Her stewardship has strengthened the restaurant’s legacy, earning loyal fans and praise, and helping cement YUCA'S as a cherished fixture in Los Angeles. This class is part of a tamal series that delves into the many regional styles found across Mexico. Known in Nahuatl as tamalli, the tamal is a corn masa bundle that can take on different shapes and sizes and hold a wide range of fillings. Deeply tied to celebrations and ancestral remembrance, tamales continue to bring families together through modern tamaladas. Participants practice key techniques, including preparing masa, building a flavorful filling, and folding and wrapping with corn husks or banana leaves to keep this time-honored craft alive.

Set a few decades after Shakespeare’s time, this intimate chamber musical follows Cat, a Puritan teenager whose curiosity is sparked by a trunk of forbidden books, and Agnes, her housemaid with a secretive past.
