Gaslamp Long BeachThe Freedom Ball 2026
Rooted in the boundary-blurring spirit of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, this ball centers on artistic freedom across eras and genres. Expect special performances and appearances that showcase local talent while uplifting the legacy of BIPOC music makers and the trailblazers of ballroom. The celebration salutes those who opened doors and encourages emerging voices to claim their space and shape what comes next. In the Kiki scene, Virgin Vogue spotlights ballroom pop stars at their debut, with contenders channeling a pop artist vibe, mic in hand and a tight eight count. Runway asks participants to pump for their chosen era by serving a look that clearly embodies a single genre such as pop, rock, country, rap, or jazz. Face focuses on polished confidence, with classic beauty that turns heads, tailored suits and clean skin for male figures, a cat eye, red lip, and a dress for female figures, and mix and match options for GNC participants. Sex Appeal leans into 90s and 2000s video vixen energy, where seductive presence counts and nudity is off limits, no revealing cutouts or pasties allowed. Cunt vs Cunt, subtitled Tootie Fruity, calls for show-stopping style inspired by stage icons like Prince, Little Richard, Boy George, and David Bowie. Realness rolls out a 2000s BET Awards red carpet moment with glitter, fur, two piece sets, durags, denim, braids, grills, and other era staples. Hand Performance channels classic doo wop with groups of two to four delivering a production set to one doo wop track, era-matching looks, and synchronized hands. Kiki Labels nods to Say My Name with a monochrome outfit built around a single color from Destiny’s Child’s video. Best Dressed as a house revives Rip the Runway with a cohesive streetwear collection that reads as one brand, and teams of five are required. The Performance category, The Big Payback, invites callouts of long-time rivals, requires advance signup naming your opponent, shares a list after signups close, and asks everyone to bring a funk-inspired look in honor of James Brown with competitive energy kept friendly. On the mainstream side, Virgin Vogue takes a Southern turn that favors hospitality over clichés, with flannel, denim, bandanas, or daisy dukes encouraged and no cowboy hats or boots permitted. Face is a red lips showcase using Fenty Beauty, pairing a natural beat with a bold lip in the spirit of Rihanna’s Loud cover, and the lipstick must be applied during tens on the runway. Runway offers a 10,000 grand prize under the Ring the Alarm theme, challenging entrants to reinterpret and elevate a Beyoncé video or stage look while providing a creative printed reference instead of a phone image. Realness celebrates the birth of hip hop in the 80s with hair and wardrobe touches like sweatsuits and jumpsuits that recall Salt N Pepa, LL Cool J, Run DMC, or Queen Latifah. Performance as a House honors boy and girl groups with productions by teams of three or four that include at least one track from the chosen group, earn tens together, then break apart to battle for the top chart spot, with mixes limited to one minute and thirty seconds and affiliations optional. Sex Siren pays tribute to 2000s R&B and rap sex symbols by reimagining an album cover in your own style, drawing inspiration from figures such as D’Angelo, Lil Kim, Adina Howard, Khia, Foxy Brown, Ginuwine, or Usher.
