Tiny Tin Mixed Media

Create a pocket-size scene in a hinged mint tin during a hands-on, two-day mixed media workshop at the Sawdust Art Festival’s Healy House Studio. Participants begin with a prepared tin, a precut and sanded wooden house, and a selection of landscape pieces, then build outward to transform simple materials into a highly detailed miniature environment. Instruction covers small-scale design and safe techniques such as drilling, hammering, bending wire, and forming flowers and fence posts from nails. Learn to craft button trees with thread, wire, and glue, add reclaimed metal to suggest paths, textures, and architectural accents, and finish your tiny house with paint, collage, or layered surfaces. Throughout the process, students explore composition, balance, and basic color theory while working on both wood and metal. A broad array of curated papers, paints, vintage fragments, and found objects is provided so each piece can develop in a personal way. Every artwork will be unique, with each tin telling its own small story. Wrap-up time may shift based on each artist’s pace. The fee is $150 per student, and all materials are included. Emerging Waves

Emerging Waves is a lightly guided 5Rhythms class led by Teacher in Training Marbella Mondaca, with mentorship from Kierra Foster-Ba and Masayo Benoist. With simple invitations to move, you travel through the map of Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness. Music shares the role of teacher alongside the facilitator, supporting a movement practice that leaves room for personal expression. Rooted in the teachings of Gabrielle Roth, 5Rhythms is practiced around the world as movement meditation, a creative path, and a philosophy grounded in the belief that when we move, we heal. In this space, movement can be both medicine and metaphor, opening pathways to insight and embodied presence. Every body, culture, age, and level of experience is welcome. As the rhythms are danced together, a community grows that moves, sweats, and learns side by side, encouraging authenticity, curiosity, kindness, and the courage to be real. Creativity, connection, and community are at the heart of the experience.

6/23 Japanese Fermentation Workshop: Koji Seasonings

Explore the foundations of Japanese fermentation in a hands-on class centered on koji. Learn how this time-honored ingredient elevates simple foods into flavorful, gut-supportive staples and how to fold straightforward koji seasonings into everyday cooking. The session welcomes beginners and anyone interested in fermentation, gut health, or authentic Japanese home cuisine, and it concludes with practical techniques, simple recipes, and the confidence to use koji at home. Begin with an introduction to how koji underpins familiar favorites such as miso, soy sauce, sake, mirin, and vinegar. Then experience how fermentation shifts flavor through a guided tasting that compares soy sauce with soy sauce koji served with tofu, traditional salt pickles with salt koji pickles, and spinach goma-ae sweetened with ama koji versus sugar, along with amazake. Steamed rice will be served. Create take-home seasonings during the workshop. Each participant prepares salt koji and soy sauce koji, with an option to make tamari koji for an additional fee. These batches will continue to ferment at home, and you will learn several methods to manage them using tools like a yogurt maker, sous vide, or simple room-temperature fermentation. An ama sweet koji demonstration is included, and a ready-to-use portion is provided so its natural sweetness can be enjoyed right away. Class policies include a minimum enrollment of three participants, with cancellation 48 hours beforehand and a full refund if the minimum is not met. The class is open to ages 14 and up, and anyone 17 or younger must attend with an adult. Refunds are available when canceling or rescheduling at least seven days before the class begins. 6/27 Japanese Fermentation Workshop: Koji Seasonings

Learn the essentials of Japanese fermentation in a hands-on workshop centered on koji, the culture behind many pantry staples. Discover how it elevates simple ingredients into savory, digestion-supportive foods and pick up easy techniques you can use in everyday home cooking. This session welcomes beginners and anyone curious about fermentation and Japanese home-style flavors, and it includes practical recipes so participants leave confident using koji right away. The class begins with an introduction to how koji shapes familiar ingredients such as miso, soy sauce, sake, mirin, and vinegar. A guided tasting then shows how fermentation changes flavor and texture, with side-by-side bites like tofu paired with soy sauce and with soy sauce koji, classic salt pickles compared with salt koji pickles, and spinach goma-ae sweetened with ama koji rather than sugar. Amazake, a gently sweet fermented rice drink, is included, and steamed rice is served to highlight umami and sweetness. Participants make salt koji and soy sauce koji to take home, with an option to prepare tamari koji for an additional fee. Guidance covers several at-home methods to continue fermentation, including using a yogurt maker, a sous vide setup, or simple room-temperature curing. A demonstration of sweet koji is provided, and everyone receives a ready-to-use portion to enjoy immediately. Class policies include a minimum enrollment of three participants, with a full refund if the session is canceled 48 hours in advance due to low enrollment. The workshop is open to ages 14 and up, and anyone 17 or younger must attend with an adult. Refunds are available when canceling or rescheduling at least seven days before the start. Ingredients may vary, so please confirm any allergies ahead of time. The workshop fee is $65.

Tiny Tin Mixed Media

Create a tiny world in a pocket tin during an immersive two-day mixed media workshop at the Sawdust Art Festival’s Healy House Studio. Participants begin with a prepared tin, a precut and sanded wooden house, and a set of landscape pieces, then develop a richly detailed scene as new elements are added and transformed. Guided instruction covers small scale building and design, including safe drilling and hammering, bending wire into delicate forms, shaping nails into flowers and fence posts, and assembling button trees with thread, wire, and glue. Salvaged metal can become pathways, textures, and architectural accents, while the little houses may be painted, collaged, or finished with layered surfaces. Along the way, the class practices fundamentals such as composition, balance, and basic color theory across both wood and metal. A broad selection of papers, paints, vintage bits, and found objects is provided so each piece can grow into a personal, expressive work. No two tins will be the same, each one telling its own story. Falsettos

Falsettos is a candid, compassionate musical about the many forms family can take, the demands of love, and the search for identity. Directed by Craig Tyrl, with musical direction by Jennifer Schniepp and choreography by Jennifer Kornsweit, the production follows Marvin, his former wife, his son, his partner, and the circle that gathers around them as they navigate evolving relationships, obligations, and the work of being present for one another. A score that balances humor with vulnerability underscores moments of joy and heartbreak. Set in the late 1970s and early 1980s as the AIDS crisis emerges, the story becomes both an intimate family portrait and a reflection on mortality, community, and the pressing need for connection. Presented by The Wayward Artist, this staging foregrounds queer stories, reexamines what family can mean, and acknowledges the courage of living openly and true to oneself. By turns playful and poignant, it celebrates resilience, the families we choose, and love as a radical act.

Sawdust Art Festival

At the Sawdust Art Festival, Mike Maimone takes the Cove Stage for two sets that blend his own songs with cover material. A pianist, singer, songwriter, and producer, Maimone brings a blues-rooted sound shaped by a swampy New Orleans vibe with shades of Dr. John and Leon Russell. He has averaged more than a hundred performances each year as a solo artist, with his trio Mutts, and as a session keyboardist, appearing on late night television, at major festivals, and at notable venues. His work also includes playing keys with Stevie Wonder in a tribute honoring his late husband, Howard Bragman. Beyond performing, he created an album paired with a book about love, loss, and healing, a project described as a unified piece that reflects on the endurance of love and encourages openness to connection.
