The lineup features Joey Sellers, an influential educator and composer whose accolades include the Gil Evans Fellowship and the Sammy Nestico Award, with work performed by ensembles and soloists around the world and mentorship that has guided several players on the stage. Abdullah Ebrahim draws on studies at California State University Northridge and the University of North Texas and experience with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, pairing classical clarity with modern jazz improvisation. Steven Robinson, a Los Angeles native and new dad, brings a wide-ranging resume from international tours with John Fogerty and Grammy winning projects to daily performances at Disneyland with The Straw Hatters. Bob Lawrence, a sought-after trombonist, arranger, and educator and a former student of Sellers, adds credits with Poncho Sanchez, Luis Enrique, and the Latin Grammy nominated Afro-Peruvian Jazz Orchestra. Bass trombonists Robert Todd and Rose Doylemason round out the brass, reflecting deep experience across jazz ensembles, orchestras, brass groups, chamber settings, and more. A creative rhythm section underpins the summit with pianist Sam Ross, a Long Beach based composer and DownBeat Award winner, and bassist Cole Sainburg, whose musical voice is shaped by jazz along with Armenian folk and traditional Japanese music, with Matthew Elton Smith driving the ensemble on drums. The concert highlights the trombone’s expressive range, from lyrical lines to laughter and power, and celebrates mentorship, friendship, shared history, and the spirit of jazz across generations.

Presentation by Barefoot Joel Robinson

Joel Robinson, also known as Barefoot Joel and serving as Director and Senior Naturalist with Naturalist for You, shares a plan to shift Orange Hills from an Irvine Company housing development to a park that links Irvine Regional Park with Peters Canyon Regional Park. The vision focuses on safe crossings for both people and wildlife at Santiago Canyon Road and Jamboree Road, creating a connected 1,245-acre landscape. It protects movement corridors for mountain lions and other mammals, adds family-friendly trails as well as challenging routes to sweeping viewpoints, and sets aside areas for restoration and preservation. The effort also aims to protect a prehistoric Native American village site in recognition of the region’s cultural heritage. Robinson has worked with The Nature Conservancy and other outdoor organizations and enjoys hiking and camping with his family. Parking is by the fertility clinic in the IRWD parking lot.

Tiny Tin Mixed Media

This two day mixed media workshop invites participants to craft a miniature world inside an Altoid-style tin using a thoughtful mix of vintage, upcycled, and new materials. Each person begins with a prepared tin, a precut and sanded wooden house, and a selection of landscape elements, then builds outward to create an intricate, imaginative scene. Guided instruction covers small-scale design and construction along with safe tool use, including drilling and hammering. Participants learn to bend wire, shape nails into flowers and fence posts, and create button trees with thread, wire, and glue. Reclaimed metal may be added to form paths, textures, and architectural accents, while houses can be finished with paint, collage, or layered mixed-media surfaces. Throughout the process, foundational design principles such as composition, balance, and basic color theory are explored across both wood and metal. A generous assortment of curated papers, paints, vintage fragments, and found materials is provided so each artwork reflects a personal vision. Every finished tin is one of a kind, a small story brought to life. Session end time may shift depending on each artist’s creative pace. The fee is $150 per person and includes all materials. Held at Sawdust Art Festival’s Healy House Studio.

Irvine CA An Evening with Yotam Ottolenghi

At Irvine Barclay Theatre in Irvine, experience a live conversation with Yotam Ottolenghi as he celebrates his forthcoming cookbook, SIMPLE TOO, the follow up to Ottolenghi Simple. The program explores what cooking simply can look like in busy, modern life, sharing recipes that fit real schedules so even a half formed plan can become a deeply satisfying meal. Through stories about developing the book with co author Verena Lochmuller and practical kitchen tips, Ottolenghi highlights ingredients and techniques that shape the new collection, including lightly dressed beans, black chickpeas, generous uses of sesame, sweet and spicy contrasts, pasta finished directly in its sauce, and whole meals roasted on a single tray for easier cleanup. He will also introduce the Fundamentals chapter, a set of make ahead flavor builders for the fridge such as spring onion oil, green salsa, za’atar oil, confit tomatoes, and chili crisp that lift weeknight cooking with minimal effort. Arvida Book Co. serves as the bookstore for this event. A leading voice in contemporary food, Ottolenghi is known for vibrant, vegetable forward cooking and has authored beloved titles including Plenty, Jerusalem, Simple, Flavor, and Sweet, alongside a body of work in delis and restaurants that champions bold flavors and accessible techniques.
