Performing Arts Center , 1 Grand Ave, San Luis Obispo · verified Oct 14
    See details

Christian Elliott, a leading theatre organist with classical training and a focus on historically faithful silent film accompaniment, performs live organ for Buster Keaton’s The General at the Performing Arts Center San Luis Obispo. The 1926 film, inspired by the true Civil War Great Locomotive Chase, blends comedy and action and is widely celebrated as one of cinema’s great achievements. Keaton performs every stunt himself, culminating in a renowned moment where a real steam locomotive crashes from a burning river bridge, noted as the most expensive shot of the silent era. A century after its debut, this presentation pairs the film with live organ to evoke the authentic atmosphere of silent-era moviegoing. Presented by Cal Poly Arts and sponsored by Bert and Candace Forbes, Francie Levy and Larry Akey for love of organ music, and Maryellen and Michael Simkins.

Harry Houdini, one of the earliest global superstars, died in 1926. Before he passed, he and his wife Bess devised a private code, known as Houdini's Final Secret, that would confirm any message sent from the beyond. Marking the 100th anniversary of his death, The Village Wizard explores the story of this extraordinary performer and his devoted wife, and what unfolded after his final bow. Blending history, storytelling, magic, and a spirit séance, this program revisits the pact at the heart of their legend and asks the enduring question... did Houdini return?
