After a 13-year break between studio releases, he returned with I Hear Thunder on his Whiskey Bayou Records imprint, achieving his first Billboard number one in more than 30 years. Known for a distinctive guitar tone and a powerful, Otis Redding–inspired vocal style, he also champions the preservation of his home state’s wetlands as founder of Voice of the Wetlands, and he received the Louisiana Wildlife Federation’s Governor’s Award for Conservationist of the Year in 2010. His work includes an appearance in the IMAX film Hurricane on the Bayou, narrated by Meryl Streep.
