R5 HILL REPEAT RIDE!
A midweek hill workout that follows the route used by the old G2 hill repeats, starting at Board & Brew in Laguna Niguel. Bring lights during the first few weeks. This is a cohesive group ride that welcomes all levels, covering about 17 miles with roughly 2,381 feet of climbing. The group attacks each ascent, then comes back together regularly... at the bottom of the first climb on Highlands, at the third on PID South, and at the optional Clubhouse hill. Regroups also happen at the top of Niguel Road and the final climb on PID North before heading back together. To keep waits short, if the lead rider crests a hill and descends past you, turn around and head down as well. The Hill Repeat Ride runs every Wednesday night through mid September.

The program emphasizes logic, critical thinking, and project-based learning rather than basic screen time. The narrative features accounts of headless apparitions, bandits, and even a pirate attack, blending eerie lore with local history. The walk concludes outside the Mission near the church, where an 1812 earthquake crushed forty-two parishioners, and at least one spirit is said to remain unsettled. It is a history-filled evening through one of Southern California’s oldest and most haunted locales.

Participants then come together to work on two handbell pieces with clinician Anne Kelley of Apache Junction, Arizona, who serves as Chair of Handbell Musicians of America Area 11. Instruction emphasizes technique, articulation, and rhythmic drills to build skills and strengthen ensemble cohesion for confident performances throughout the ringing season. The South County Community Handbell Choir and friends serve as mentors, and attendees ring alongside musicians from more experienced choirs for learning through observation and individual attention. Most materials are provided and no advance preparation is needed. Please bring gloves, risers if needed, and binders, with some of these items available to borrow. Lunch is on your own, and refreshments are provided during breaks. This is an Area 12 Handbell Musicians of America endorsed event hosted by the South County Community Handbell Choir.

Beaches & Besties is a relaxed retreat set at the Hilton Garden Inn Dana Point Doheny Beach, directly across from Doheny Beach. Each attendee has a six foot table with access to power, and bringing a personal light is recommended. Free Wi-Fi is available. There is a restaurant and bar on the lobby level along with a rooftop bar, and the town offers many dining options. Parking is offered at a group rate. The weekend includes a complimentary make and take and a beach themed table decoration contest. The Queen of Glitter On Top winner receives a deposit at no charge. Lunch and refreshments are provided on Saturday, with snacks available throughout the weekend. All other meals are on your own. A nonrefundable deposit of $50 is required to secure a spot and it applies to the balance. Final payments are due 60 days before the event. A crop fee of $250 per person applies for day cropping, and a reduced rate is available when booking with the designated hotel room block. Day cropping is intended for locals who go home at night. If plans change and a hotel stay is added, the reservation must be made through the event and full event pricing applies. Rooms in the block are offered at summer rates, including a king room with sofa bed starting at $229 plus tax per night and a room with two queen beds starting at $249 plus tax per night. Adding a third or fourth guest increases the nightly cost by $20 per person. Guests must be 18 or older. Roommates are self arranged, and pricing will be adjusted if room occupancy changes. Cancellations 31 days or more before the retreat may be refunded minus the deposit. Within 30 days there are no refunds or credits, and you may gift your spot to another person. Deposits can be transferred one time within 12 months, but not within 30 days of the event. Payments made through third party processors that limit refunds after 180 days may incur their service fees. All cancellations must be submitted in writing.

A fixture of Delta swamp blues for more than three decades, Benoit pairs a distinctive guitar sound with a voice reminiscent of Otis Redding and has earned five Blues Music Awards, including B.B. King Entertainer of the Year twice, plus induction into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. After a 13-year recording break he returned with the self-produced I Hear Thunder on his Whiskey Bayou Records label, which reached number one on a Billboard chart for the first time in over 30 years. His work offstage includes founding Voice of the Wetlands to protect Louisiana’s coast, receiving the Louisiana Wildlife Federation’s Governor’s Award for Conservationist of the Year, and appearing in the IMAX documentary Hurricane on the Bayou narrated by Meryl Streep. Over the years he has collaborated with artists such as Dr. John, Willie Nelson, Allen Toussaint, Maria Muldaur, James Cotton, and Cyril Neville. Admission is $58.00 and the show is open to all ages.
