Falsettos

Falsettos is a musical that examines love, family, and identity with honesty and heart. At its center is Marvin, along with his former wife, their son, his boyfriend, and the circle that forms around them as they navigate shifting relationships and the responsibility of truly showing up for one another. With sharp humor, vulnerability, and a vibrant score, the story balances laughter and heartache while revealing the costs and comforts of imperfect love. Set in the late 1970s and early 1980s as the AIDS crisis emerges, this intimate portrait expands into a reflection on mortality, community, and the urgent need for connection. Centering queer lives, it questions traditional ideas of family and honors the courage of living authentically. Both playful and affecting, the production celebrates resilience, chosen kinship, and love as a radical act, inviting audiences to feel deeply and consider how we care for each other in the face of change, loss, and hope. Presented at Irvine United Congregational Church.

A Little Bit of Everything Dance

A community dance night at Splits Bar @ Forest Lanes invites everyone to shape the music by submitting a favorite dance song in advance, with the option to share two if one just will not do. The organizer will weave all selections into the playlist so there is a little bit of everything on the floor. The gathering also celebrates July birthdays, including two special women who have journeyed around the globe many times, and anyone else with a birthday that month. Cake will be served. Arriving early is recommended for those hoping to secure a table or bar seat. The evening begins with beginner friendly line dancing led by experienced dancers, moves into the Wild, Wild West group dance and introductions, then opens up for hours of dancing. A short, interactive mixer led by the host helps guests meet one another, and nametags make it easier to remember new friends. The atmosphere is welcoming to singles and anyone attending solo. Entry is $10, a community contribution that supports meetup dues and equipment, including an upgraded speaker to enhance sound for this and future dances. Volunteers are appreciated to help greet guests, hand out nametags, check people in, and collect admission during the night. You can pay cash at the door or purchase a ticket in advance. David Benoit: Resonance and Renewal — World Premiere

Soka Performing Arts Center launches its season with the world premiere of Resonance and Renewal, a new cello concerto by pianist and composer David Benoit, with Cécilia Tsan as featured soloist. Shaped by Benoit’s recovery from a kidney transplant, the music follows a path from uncertainty and fragility to resilience, gratitude, and healing. The cello leads the narrative like a human voice, sometimes searching and delicate, then ascending with renewed strength. The program opens with remarks from kidney surgeon Jeffrey Veale, head of the kidney transplant program at UCLA. Benoit then offers reflections on his experience with End Stage Kidney Disease. The premiere follows, with Benoit conducting a 40 piece orchestra and Tsan at center stage. In the second half, Benoit returns to the piano to play a selection of his well known works, and the orchestra rejoins for the finale. Across more than four decades, Benoit has built a career as a conductor, composer, arranger, and jazz pianist. He is a multiple Grammy nominee and an Emmy winner for It’s Your 50th Christmas, Charlie Brown, with scoring credits that include The Stars Fell on Henrietta and The Christmas Tree. His appearances with major ensembles such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra, long tenure as Music Director of the Asia America Symphony Association, and founding of the Asia America Youth Orchestra reflect a broad musical reach. He has performed for three U.S. presidents and is known for connecting jazz and symphonic traditions. Cécilia Tsan studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, earned top honors in cello and chamber music, and is a prizewinner at international competitions. She has appeared worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician with collaborators such as Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Augustin Dumay. In Los Angeles she has recorded hundreds of film scores with composers including John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Danny Elfman, serves as Principal Cellist of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, has performed on televised ceremonies such as the Academy Awards and the Emmy Awards, and is Artistic Director of the Sunday Afternoon Concerts in the Dome series at Mount Wilson Observatory.
