His presence brings to the surface longings for love, justice, and the right to determine one’s own path, and the fallout becomes dangerous. Rooted in Southern Gothic tradition yet speaking to the country at large, this play reimagines the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice as an American fever dream, where the promise of freedom is treated not as refuge but as a threat.

Mediterranean Movement - A monthly dance class with Monica

DanzHaus / The Gingerbread House, 1275 Connecticut St, San Francisco
    See details

Mediterranean Movement is a monthly, in-person dance and rhythm class with Monica at DanzHaus / The Gingerbread House, held on second Saturdays. Each 75-minute session welcomes participants of all backgrounds and deepens folk, artistic, and cultural dance practice through a respectful, context-rich approach. Rooted in vernacular traditions from Egypt, the Arab world, and southern Italy, the class is musically driven and explores how dancers can engage with living traditions while working right where they are and with what they have. Expect a warm up, guided movement, improvisation, combinations, and contextual exploration, followed by circle dance and a cool down. Choreography is limited, leaving space to develop personal style, intuition, and a stronger connection to the body. Classes are live and in person, and participants may make rhythms or songs for one another. Musicians are occasionally invited to collaborate. No two sessions are exactly the same, and newcomers can start at any time while still benefiting from threads that link the series over time. This class suits people who want intention, cultural context, structured technique practice, comfort with improvisation, and opportunities to connect songs with movement, people, and place. It is not designed as a straight belly dance class or a straight tarantella class, although elements of both may be present within a broader framework that honors distinctions between forms and the migrations that carry them. There is plentiful street parking, and the studio is near the 19 and 48 MUNI lines that connect to BART. Please note the studio is up one flight of stairs and there is no elevator. Sliding scale pricing is available at $15, $20, or $25 per class. Paying in advance is appreciated, and early arrival to pay at the door is possible with exact cash or venmo. There are no refunds or make-up classes.

Insect Pinning Class: Green-Banded Urania Moth

Paxton Gate, 824 Valencia St, San Francisco
    See details

Celebrate the brilliant quirks of Urania leilus in a hands-on class dedicated to preserving this green-banded day-flying moth. Known for iridescent scales that refract light like tiny prisms and a swallowtail outline that once led early naturalists to mistake it for a butterfly, this species migrates in dazzling swarms and even gathers minerals at muddy riverbanks. Its vivid greens and blues signal a potent defense, earned during the caterpillar stage by feeding on toxic Omphalea plants and storing those chemicals for flight. In this two-hour session, participants learn the complete pinning process from hydration through spreading and long-term preservation, guided step by step by an expert instructor. A Paxton Gate spreading kit is used to prepare a specimen that you will take home. The kit includes a box of entomology pins, an anchor pin, four strips of vellum paper, forceps, a pinning board, and a printed instruction pamphlet. Classes take place in San Francisco. Participants under 18 must attend with an adult. Pre-registration is required because materials are prepared for each student and space is limited. Cancellations made at least 72 hours in advance receive store credit that can be applied to merchandise or future classes. Please arrive promptly at the start time, and feel free to bring lunch or snacks.

At The Alembic, this twice-monthly drop-in Relatefulness session offers a group meditation and authentic relating practice focused on what is truly arising in the here and now as people connect. Related to approaches like Circling, Authentic Relating, and T-Group, the format invites participants to notice patterns in relationship, emotions, body sensations, and other aspects of immediate experience, then name and share them so the group can see one another and the broader social context more clearly. FloLab - $300 Weekly Rap Contest and Cypher

Club Cali, 2355 Telegraph Ave, Berkeley · verified Aug 2
    See details

FloLab brings real Hip Hop to the forefront in the Bay Area, pushing back against spaces that have diluted the culture. It offers a consistent home where MCs hone their craft, the audience’s voice matters, and community stays at the center. Each week, artists, writers, listeners, and neighbors gather for a $300 rap writing contest in an open mic atmosphere built around substance, style, and truth. You do not need to rap to be part of it, as supporters and spectators are welcomed alongside performers. The contest asks participants to follow a set topic and beats, write one verse per beat with hooks or choruses allowed, and memorize their work for the strongest impact. Crowd response decides the outcome. Prizes are awarded at three levels, with $150 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third. People come for authentic Hip Hop culture, a growing Bay Area community, weekly themes that reflect real life, and a space where MCs can build, test, sharpen, and perform while the crowd genuinely engages. The movement is also building toward expansion into San Francisco and San Jose, with ongoing support helping create more spaces that keep the culture in the hands of the people.

    Orpheus Descending by Tennessee Williams

1501 Martin Luther King Jr Way, Oakland · verified Aug 2
    See details

Orpheus Descending, a work by Tennessee Williams, centers on a magnetic wanderer who enters a small town shaped by prejudice and strict moral control. His presence awakens long-suppressed hopes for love, justice, and the freedom to chart one’s own course, and the turmoil that follows carries a heavy cost. Rooted in the Southern Gothic tradition yet resonating on a national scale, Williams reimagines the Orpheus and Eurydice myth as an American fever dream, where the promise of freedom is treated not as a safe haven but as a threat.
