Deaf hosts foster a voice off, sign on environment where Deaf and hard of hearing ASL users and hearing allies can connect and practice conversation. The gathering uses indoor seating within the food hall. Participants are encouraged to prepare with their ASL teacher beforehand. West Oakland BART is referenced for transit access.

At The Freight, a performance features maestro Pandit Nayan Ghosh with tabla player Ishaan Ghosh, highlighting the depth and vitality of North Indian classical music. Nayan is internationally known as a rare artist who has achieved virtuoso command of both tabla and sitar. His music is marked by a glowing sound, a wide-ranging repertoire, and expressive nuance. Trained intensively by his father, Padmabhushan Pandit Nikhil Ghosh, and further guided by the legendary Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa, he later deepened his sitar studies with Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta. His family’s musical heritage includes his uncle, Pandit Pannalal Ghosh, celebrated as a pioneer of the North Indian classical flute. Recognized in India as a leading tabla soloist grounded in a traditional baaj, Nayan has partnered on stage with many of the greats, among them Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta, Ustad Munnawar Ali Khan, and Ustad Rais Khan. His recordings appear on labels in India and abroad, including RAGA Records, India Archive Music of New York, BOL Records of San Francisco, and ARION of France. For his role in promoting Indian music in the West, he received an Achievement Award in 1998 from California’s Lieutenant Governor Gray Davis. Ishaan Ghosh represents a dynamic younger voice in tabla. A child prodigy who gave his first solo at the age of three, he has developed a distinctive style under the close mentorship of his father, shaping intricate rhythmic designs drawn from a broad repertoire. He has performed both as a soloist and as an accompanist with noted artists such as Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta, Ustad Aashish Khan, Ustad Nishat Khan, Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar, violin legend Dr. N Rajam, Kaushiki Chakraborty, Rakesh Chaurasia, Purbayan Chatterjee, and others. While firmly rooted in classical tradition, he also explores collaborative projects with international musicians, including jazz guitarist Max Clouth and artists from Iran, China, and Estonia. His outreach includes appearances at TEDx, ongoing performances and lectures for young audiences, and a special Habitat for Humanity program in Atlanta where he was honored by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. Together, Nayan and Ishaan offer a meeting of generations and a shared devotion to rhythm and melody, bringing listeners into a conversation between tradition and fresh creative energy.

Isaiah Collier appears at Yoshi’s Oakland with a forward-looking take on contemporary jazz that bridges heritage and the present moment. A South Side Chicago native, he is a composer, arranger, educator, and self-described sonic scientist whose work has earned international recognition. Honors include selection as a Steve Jobs Archive Fellow, being named Chicagoan of the Year in Jazz in 2024, a cover feature in DownBeat Magazine, and placement on The New York Times list of the year’s best jazz albums. His suite The Story of 400 Years was highlighted on NPR’s Jazz Night in America, and he has received a DownBeat Critics Poll award along with the Jazz Journalists Association’s Up and Coming Artist of the Year.
