Built in 1898 by Hiram Clay Kellogg, this early Orange County residence reflects a blend of neoclassical and Victorian styles. After the death of his first wife, he created a grand mansion as a gift for his second wife, Helen. Inspired by a love of tall ships, he added a three-story spiral staircase that wraps around a mast-like center and rises to a crow’s nest suspended over open space. Hiram died in 1921, and Helen remained in the home for another 42 years, ultimately passing away there as well. Today, reports of unexplained activity suggest the Kellogg family may still linger within this uniquely designed house.

DROC plans a full-day mountain ride to Lake Arrowhead, climbing the Rim of the World Scenic Byway, passing Silverwood Lake, and continuing through Crestline on Highway 18 to Lake Arrowhead Village for lunch before the return to OC. This is a long ride with multiple stops and a full-day commitment, so participants should come well fueled and hydrated and be ready to spend the day in the saddle. Proper protective gear is expected, including a riding jacket, pants, gloves, and boots, with leathers recommended. A small backpack with water and an extra layer is helpful, since mountain temperatures tend to be cooler than in the valley. All riders are expected to act responsibly. Avoid drinking and riding, and consider a ride share if you plan to have alcoholic beverages. By taking part, riders assume the risks associated with group activities and agree not to hold the hosts, organizers, assistants, or co-organizers liable for injury, loss, or damage. Participation is at will. A general safety briefing will be held before departure and all riders must attend.
