Reverence for Life on the Streets: Medicine as a Moral Act in an Unequal World

Taking place the day before Aspen’s second Albert Schweitzer Day, three leading figures in humanitarian medicine gather on the TACAW stage for a wide ranging conversation about care, conscience, and the responsibilities of this moment. Harsh Mander, a civil rights leader from New Delhi and a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, brings decades of work on poverty, displacement, and human dignity, spanning landmark legal action, policy, writing, and initiatives such as Karwan e Mohabbat. Dr. Jim O’Connell, founder of Boston Health Care for the Homeless and the subject of Tracy Kidder’s Rough Sleepers, reflects on building a durable model of compassionate urban care. Dr. Jim Withers, founder of the Street Medicine Institute and last year’s Schweitzer lecturer in Aspen, draws on more than three decades of providing healthcare directly to people living on the streets. The discussion is moderated by Dr. Kaitlin Schwan, a human rights advocate and scholar of street medicine. Together, they consider how different paths can answer the same call to serve people facing profound inequality, and they revisit a question Albert Schweitzer raised in Aspen in 1949 about what it means to preserve our humanity amid the rise of nationalism, austerity, and the pulling back of care from the most vulnerable. A reception with light bites hosted by Aspen Historical Society follows the program. The Aspen Historical Society preserves and shares local history in ways that connect people to the community’s character as it continues to evolve.

Grace Potter

Grace Potter steps into the spotlight amid the long-awaited unveiling of Medicine, the album she recorded in 2008 with producer T Bone Burnett and has now officially released after years in the vault. Tracked at The Village Studios with Jim Keltner, Dennis Crouch, Marc Ribot, and Keefus Ciancia, the sessions marked a turning point as Burnett focused the sound around her voice and the pulse. The music moves away from early roots-rock toward a moodier, more soulful approach that reveals new nuance, restraint, and surges of intensity in her singing. Across 12 songs, Medicine combines a classic feel with an intuitive, in-the-room energy. "Before The Sky Falls" struts and builds gradually, "Low Road" reflects on a surreal night in Austin, and "If I Was from Paris" taps the bite of her Gibson Flying V. The path travels from the drifting atmosphere of "Colors" to the exploratory blues of "To Shore" and the forward-looking "Oasis," culminating in a horn-laced title track that shifts between urgency and grit with a touch of Burnett’s guitar. Originally shelved when her label pivoted to a successful collaboration with Mark Batson that led to Grace Potter and the Nocturnals’ self-titled album, these recordings finally see the light as a significant addition to her catalog. The release arrives in the context of a career that includes three Grammy nominations and endorsements from rock luminaries. All ages are welcome.

Heather Hansman: Fierce Country

Outdoor journalist Heather Hansman highlights the overlooked legacies of three women who transformed how people connect with America’s wild places. The narrative follows Georgie White, who in 1945 leapt into the Grand Canyon with only a lifejacket, then went on to guide trips through its rapids and help spark modern river running. It looks to Anne LaBastille, a trailblazing wilderness guide who protected endangered species from her remote Adirondack cabin and anticipated the effects of climate change. It also explores the life of Dolores LaChapelle, a pioneering powder skier whose environmental philosophy influenced the radical environmental movement of the 1970s and shaped contemporary conservation ethics. United by deep devotion to the outdoors and a refusal to compromise, these women were often recognized only within small circles. Hansman brings their stories forward by immersing in three rugged landscapes and situating their achievements within the broader, evolving story of the American wild. Fans of writers like Pam Houston and David Grann will find a blend of adventure, history, and keen reporting.

LVDY, pronounced like lady, is the Colorado duo of Kathleen Hooper and Aubrey Mable. Rooted in singer songwriter and indie folk traditions, they lean into airy harmonies and natural acoustic textures. When they sing in unison their voices fuse so closely it can be hard to tell them apart, and their harmonies glide with ease. Their songs center on love and human connection, offering gentle reminders that no one is alone. Drawing inspiration from nature and the bonds that tie people together, they move comfortably across genres to suit many audiences and collaborators. Since forming in 2018 they have performed hundreds of times across the United States and Europe, building their path independently and cultivating a devoted grassroots community known as the LVDYMOB. What began with street performances has grown into an intimate, up close live experience, and they have shared bills with Rising Appalachia, Dirtwire, KT Tunstall, Emily King, Daniel Rodriguez, JOSEPH, Joy Oladokun, Ayla Nereo, LÉON, Emily Scott Robinson, and Brendan James.

Frontiers of Knowledge | Consciousness in the Living World

Following a standout inaugural year, Frontiers of Knowledge returns with a speaker series themed Consciousness in the Human and Living World. Previously the program traced a path from the birth of the universe to contemporary views of human awareness. This edition explores how human consciousness grows in relationship with the natural world, then expands to the far-reaching possibilities of universal intelligence, including Artificial Intelligence that is rapidly influencing daily life. It raises profound questions about life in an expanded universe and what it means to be human right now. More details on speakers and the schedule will be announced soon. Tickets are offered in two tiers. The Day Pass is $100 for programming at the Wheeler Opera House. The $350 Patron Pass includes the main program at the Wheeler Opera House followed by a reception with dinner, drinks, and entertainment at the Paul JAS Center.

Madeline Hawthorne

Madeline Hawthorne brings road-borne storytelling to the stage. The singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist was born in New England and is based in Bozeman, Montana, and her music carries the dust of long drives and late nights. Her 2024 independent album, Tales From Late Nights & Long Drives, grew from touring days and from quiet time in Montana with journals and memories, shaping songs for open highways and for those after-midnight moments when a voice of understanding matters. In performance she leans into the moment and the melody, sharing vivid narratives that trace where she has been, who she is, and who she may become.

Buffalo Traffic Jam

An all-ages concert featuring Buffalo Traffic Jam, a folk duo from Bozeman, Montana made up of Frankie Cassidy and Nathan Ross. They met at Montana State University and began shaping acoustic, story-driven songs that evoke wide open spaces and the quiet feelings tucked into daily life. Early releases included a self-titled debut EP and the singles Rescue Me and Forgot Your Roots, which helped build online momentum. Their Take Me Home EP marks a new chapter with a richer palette while staying true to honest lyrics and unvarnished instrumentation, and it has earned more than 8 million streams on major platforms. The band has appeared at festivals such as Under the Big Sky and Redwest Fest and has toured with country singer songwriter Dylan Gossett. From dorm room beginnings to packed rooms across the United States, they bring heartfelt storytelling and a warm, acoustic sound to the stage.
