Trading, Raiding and Bargaining: How the Ute Bands Negotiated Survival
Sondra Jones leads an in-person talk at the historic Wright Opera House on how Ute bands in western Colorado used trade, raiding, and negotiation to survive. The program is part of the Ouray County Historical Society’s Evenings of History, a community lecture series that highlights the people, places, and stories that have shaped Ouray County and the greater San Juan region. This season spans topics such as mining lore, early photography, clothing, recreation, and Ute history, offering insight into the characters and events that defined the American West. Talks feature local historians, researchers, storytellers, and other community experts, continuing a long tradition of preserving and sharing the area’s heritage. Admission is free for OCHS members and $5 for non-members, and tickets are only sold at the door. The venue continues a mission dating back to 1889 to partner with diverse organizations and foster arts, conversation, and community in downtown Ouray.
