This show at Arch Street Tavern features Px3 alongside Gordon Sterling and The People. Px3 is the duo of drummer Rob Madore and keyboardist and saxophonist Isaac Young. What began as an improvisation driven project now merges modern dance grooves with funk, hip hop and more, shaped by the pair’s tight musical connection. Their background includes collaborations with members of Tauk, Consider the Source, Lespecial, Goose, Eggy and Twiddle, and they also contribute to the Mono Means One collective. Their release Piano Percussion Planet features Thomas Xavier Kenney of Doom Flamingo and showcases their versatility. Gordon Sterling and The People, based in Washington, DC, deliver a blend of soul, funk and blues rock with threads of jam rock and reggae. The band centers on Gordon Sterling’s dynamic presence and introspective writing that reflects on Black experiences in America. Sterling, a Jamaican American singer, songwriter and guitarist, began this mission at 15 and brings more than 25 years of musicianship. The group’s debut album, Truth, arrived in September 2022, and its title track won Best Funk and Blues Song at the 2023 Washington DC Wammie Awards. Their performances emphasize reflection, identity, community and love, presenting music as a community driven movement.

The Kris Allen Quintet brings live jazz to a historic garden setting as part of the Sunset Sounds Concert Series. Pack a picnic and a lawn chair to relax among the greenery, then enhance the outing with complimentary first-floor tours of the house museum, a self-guided audio tour of the garden, and exhibitions by featured artists. The concert is planned for the terrace at the Amos Bull House behind the Butler-McCook garden. If the weather does not cooperate, it will shift indoors to the Amos Bull Community Room. Alto saxophonist Kris Allen leads a stellar lineup with Josh Evans on trumpet, Zaccai Curtis at the piano, Nat Reeves on bass, and Anwar Marshall on drums. The repertoire spotlights music by Gigi Gryce, who spent a short time in Hartford, and salutes pillars of hard bop and bebop including Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and Jackie McLean. Allen serves as the Lyell B. Clay Artist in Residence in Jazz and a lecturer in music at Williams, where he directs the jazz ensemble program. A Hartford area native and a protégé of Jackie McLean, he has shaped a distinctive voice as a saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and recording artist, appearing on dozens of recordings. His latest leader release, June, is his third acclaimed album on the Truth Revolution Recording Collective. Support for this program is provided by the Richard P.
