Rivas Restaurant and GrillThree Lighthouses Off New London
A free NH250 program at the Pardee-Morris House features Susan Tamulevich, executive director of the New London Maritime Society, presenting the rich histories behind Three Lighthouses Off New London. Since 2009, the Society has cared for three Connecticut coast beacons that once guided ships into New London: New London Harbor Light, first lit in 1761 and the earliest as well as the tallest on Long Island Sound; Race Rock Light Station, built in the 1870s near Fishers Island through an impressive engineering effort in the swift waters called the Race; and New London Ledge Lighthouse, a 1909 brick light often nicknamed Point Alpha by Groton submariners. The Society restores and maintains these landmarks and keeps them accessible to the public. The program also situates their stories within broader preservation efforts, noting that as GPS replaced traditional aids to navigation, many lighthouses suffered from neglect or were sold to private owners, while the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000 has enabled the transfer of more than 150 properties to new stewards. The New Haven Museum thanks community partner WSHU 91.1 FM for supporting the summer season.

Shubert TheatreThe Mercy Velvet Project
Co-presented by kamrDANCE and Yale Schwarzman Center with support from Yale Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies, The Mercy Velvet Project brings the little-heard 1999 album Live in Vain by Mercy Velvet to life onstage through a fully embodied re-creation. Across all nine tracks in their original order, musicians and dancers move together to examine what makes us human and why community is essential to survival. A queer and femme ensemble confronts the barriers to love, discovering how the act of giving and receiving mercy can open a bridge to wholeness and hope. The album’s story unfolds through tap used as percussion, contemporary choreography, original text, and live instrumentation on bass, guitar, vocals, and electronics. More than twenty-five years after the record’s release, kamrDANCE and collaborators expand its legacy through their identities and today’s political realities, highlighting vulnerability and the shared work of seeking an antidote in mercy that helps lead meaningful lives. Functioning as a rock concert and an immersive sonic experience, the piece underscores how inseparable dance and music can be. Choreographer Alexis Robbins grew up with this music, inspired by its rhythms and lyrics during living room dances. Her father, Mark Robbins, was the drummer and co-composer for Mercy Velvet, working with lyricist and vocalist Deb Lili and guitarist Lou Lili. Together with Musical Director Christie Echols and a team of collaborators, Robbins brings Live in Vain to audiences in a premiere presentation.

Brooksvale ParkGreg Mendez
An all ages concert at Space Ballroom features Greg Mendez with Scarlet Rae. Mendez is known for spare, carefully measured songwriting that delivers clear, cutting emotion. His new album, Beauty Land, is his first LP for Dead Oceans and arrives after a self-titled breakthrough in 2023 that followed many years of quietly making music between Philadelphia and New York. Recorded largely straight to tape in a modest Philadelphia home setup, the album balances wry realism and guarded hope, pairing self-scrutinizing stories with pop-leaning melodies, bright and insistent guitars, and a voice that reaches toward choral purity. Beauty Land moves through grief, love, and addiction with quiet focus. Its brief tracks sketch dreamlike scenes and off-kilter characters, from the loping pulse of I Wanna Feel Pretty to toy piano textures in Gentle Love, and a turn in Mary / Dreaming from delicate fingerpicking to a warped pop resolution. Mortality lingers over the record and the arrangements often feel purposefully fragile, whether in the organ tones of Looking Out Your Window or the slowed keys and simple plea for forgiveness in Frog. Moments of connection break through, including harmonies with his wife and bandmate Veronica late in So Mean, offering a fleeting sense of release. Presented by Premier Concerts and Manic Presents.

New Haven GreenSongs of Sedition and Rebellion
At the Pardee-Morris House, historical musician Richard Franklin Donohue explores how Connecticut patriots used song to spark dissent, celebrate triumphs, and offer thanks from the Stamp Act era through the surrender at Yorktown. Performing on a spinet harpsichord and singing, he shares findings from his own archival research, focusing on pieces printed in Connecticut between 1768 and 1783. Many selections pair well-known melodies with newly crafted words that voiced the anger, resolve, and gratitude of the colony’s supporters of independence. The program highlights works connected to John Dickinson’s Liberty Song, William Billings’ Chester, Andrew Law’s Middletown, and popular British tunes retexted for the cause of freedom. Donohue presents the music with close attention to historical context, period instrumentation, performance practice, and language, using pronunciation informed by evidence from Benjamin Franklin and Noah Webster to recreate the sound world of the time. New Haven Museum acknowledges community partner WSHU 91.1 FM for supporting the summer season.

Over five studio albums released from 2012 to 2022, they have become a reference point for modern heavy music. Their sound is built on physical low-end presence, with bassist David Ryley driving deep resonance, Johnny King’s kick drum moving air, and Jon Davis’ dark fuzz guitar paired with sharp, shouted vocals. In 2024 the band signed to Heavy Psych Sounds, and their 2022 album Evidence of Immortality brought a brooding atmosphere to their full-force approach, weaving in touches of darkwave and synth while keeping their core intensity intact.
