Opening Reception: Sheldon Krevit, Selections from the Vault

An opening reception at Kehler Liddell Gallery highlights a two-artist presentation featuring New Haven native Sheldon Krevit and Dganit Zauberman. Krevit’s farewell exhibition gathers rarely accessible pieces from his personal archive, including works not previously shown in Connecticut and others returning to view for the first time since the mid 1980s. Presented as Mystic-Heated Wine, Selections from the Vault, it reflects a long and distinguished career with artwork held in public, private, and corporate collections. Alongside this presentation, Zauberman’s Land Emerges explores connections to the earth and the human experience through an improvisational approach to oil paint that welcomes mixing, erasing, and movement until landscapes surface. Originally from Israel, she earned a BFA from the University of the Arts and an MFA from PAFA, and she paints in her Erector Square studio in New Haven. An artists’ talk is part of the reception, and small works by Kehler Liddell Gallery members complement the show. Gallery members also have an expanded presence throughout the run, joined by a brief community exhibition titled 6-Squared Art Jam in support of the Westville Village ArtWalk. Kehler Liddell Gallery is a cooperative in New Haven’s Westville village representing 28 juried artists. Established in 2003, it is among the city’s longest running retail galleries, and it is free and open to the public.

Book Talk: “Baldwin: A Love Story” by Nicholas Boggs

A Yale Library book talk spotlights Nicholas Boggs, a bestselling author and Yale College graduate, as he presents Baldwin: A Love Story, a new biography of James Baldwin and the first of its scale in nearly thirty years. Boggs will be in conversation with Jacqueline Goldsby, Thomas E. Donnelly Professor of Black Studies and of English. The book traces Baldwin’s most enduring personal and creative bonds, including with mentor Beauford Delaney, lover and muse Lucien Happersberger, and collaborators Engin Cezzar and Yoran Cazac. Through these intertwined relationships, it illuminates how Baldwin drew on complex geographic, cultural, political, artistic, and erotic currents, transforming them into work that challenged power and helped shape the civil rights movement along with Black and queer literary history. Boggs previously co-edited a new edition of Baldwin’s collaboration with Yoran Cazac, Little Man, Little Man: a Story of Childhood, and he holds degrees in English from Yale and Columbia, plus an MFA in Creative Writing from American University. His honors include fellowships and residencies at Yale’s Gilder Lehrman Center and the Beinecke Library. Co-sponsors include the Afro American Cultural Center at Yale and the Yale Black Culture Network. A book signing follows the talk. Theatre of Veterans: Female Voices from Ukraine

A staged reading of Balance by Alina Sarnatska anchors an evening of contemporary Ukrainian theater. Sarnatska is a veteran and former frontline combat medic, and her perspective shapes a story about war, service, motherhood, memory, and survival. The play follows a woman veteran striving to understand the experience of war and protect her sense of self in a world that feels shattered, offering a close look at trauma, memory, and the effort to hold on to humanity. Sarnatska’s writing grows out of her service as a frontline medic with the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Bakhmut, examining the realities of combat, the place of women in the military, and the often painful distance between soldiers and civilians. After the reading, a roundtable titled "Holding On: Women at War and the Search for Balance" brings together Alina Sarnatska; Genevieve Chase, a decorated U.S. Army Reserve senior enlisted soldier, intelligence professional, and veterans advocate; Sahraa Karimi, an Afghan-Slovak film director and screenwriter; Irina Esterlis, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry and psychology at Yale University (TBC); and Iryna Solomko Bonenberger, a journalist, documentary filmmaker, and human rights activist. Admission is free. Donations are welcome, and all proceeds support medical supplies for Ukrainian field medics through the Leleka Foundation.

The Weir

Recipient of an Olivier Award, The Weir unfolds in a secluded Irish pub where talk of ghosts, fairies, graveyards, and beer sets the tone. Valerie, new to the pub, is drawn into an evening of uncanny storytelling from the local bachelors. With a hint of sexual tension in the air and the wind stirring outside, what begins as playful blarney turns darker as the tales slip into the supernatural. The hush deepens when Valerie offers a startling story of her own.

Gatecreeper w/ Legions of Doom at Space Ballroom

Presented by Premier Concerts and Manic Presents, this all ages show at Space Ballroom brings Gatecreeper together with Eternal and Dying Remains for a night of heavy music. Gatecreeper formed in 2013 in Arizona and has built momentum through a self-titled 2014 EP and the releases Sonoran Depravation and An Unexpected Reality, followed by Deserted, which reached number three on Decibel magazine’s year-end top 40. The band features vocalist Chase H. Mason, guitarists Eric Wagner and Israel Garza, drummer Metal Matt Arrebollo, and bassist Alex Brown, with touring history that includes runs with Cannibal Corpse and Power Trip and a slot on the Decibel magazine tour alongside Obituary and Municipal Waste. They now headline under their own name around the world. Their third full-length, Dark Superstition, marks their first release on Nuclear Blast and focuses on streamlined, melodic songwriting. The record reflects mid-90s evolutions from groups like Entombed and Dismember and also nods to UK goth influences such as Sisters of Mercy and Fields of the Nephilim. Lyrical themes explore the supernatural, divination, uncertainty, and the Superstition Mountains in Arizona. Songs referenced from the album include Masterpiece of Chaos, Flesh Habit, The Black Curtain, Caught in the Treads, and Dead Star. Preproduction included collaboration with Dismember’s Fred Estby, and recording and mixing took place at God City Studios in Salem, Massachusetts with Kurt Ballou.

Schwarzman Session - Unseen Wounds: The Impact of Childhood Trauma on Adult Lives

Part of the Schwarzman Sessions, this peer-led conversation explores how childhood trauma can shape adult life long after the original experience. Fulbright Scholar Dr. Faigy Mandelbaum, a postdoctoral fellow at the Yale Child Study Center, leads a discussion about trauma-informed care and its relevance to adult relationships, emotion regulation, workplace challenges, motivation, and the increased risk of mental and physical health concerns. The program encourages attendees to consider how these issues appear within their own professions, what support efforts already exist, and what more clinicians, medical professionals, researchers, and policymakers can do to effect meaningful change. Dr. Mandelbaum is committed to serving children, families, active combat soldiers, veterans, and members of the New Haven community affected by trauma. Lunch is provided. The HU & Apocalyptica at College Street Music Hall (New Haven)

A powerhouse bill at College Street Music Hall brings together Mongolian heavy hitters The HU and Finnish cello-metal pioneers Apocalyptica, with special guest The Rasmus. The HU, formed in Ulaanbaatar in 2016, blend throat singing and the morin khuur with hard rock to shape their signature Hunnu Rock. They perform entirely in Mongolian and have earned hundreds of millions of streams, their country’s prestigious Chinggis Khaan Order, a contribution to the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order soundtrack, a Metallica Blacklist take on Through the Never, and appearances from major festivals to North American arenas with Iron Maiden. They are currently crafting a third album that builds on this evolving sound. Apocalyptica began at Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy and changed the face of metal by putting cellos at the core. What started with 1996’s Plays Metallica by Four Cellos grew into a global career of original music, wide-ranging collaborations, and relentless touring. Their recent chapter revisits their roots with Plays Metallica, Vol. 2, produced by Joe Barresi and featuring Metallica’s Rob Trujillo on The Four Horsemen. Special guest The Rasmus adds a career-spanning presence, from early Finnish chart success to worldwide recognition with In the Shadows, the 2022 album Rise that included Finland’s Eurovision entry Jezebel, and the 2025 release Weirdo. The lineup features Lauri Ylönen, Eero Heinonen, Emppu Suhonen, and Aki Hakala. This is an all ages event at College Street Music Hall.

Kath Bloom & David Shapiro, Mountain Movers at Best Video Sat., May 16

Best Video Film & Cultural Center hosts a bill featuring Kath Bloom with guitarist David Shapiro alongside Mountain Movers. The cover is $10. Often regarded as a legend, Connecticut singer and songwriter Kath Bloom draws on country, blues, and folk to create work that feels both translucent and deeply emotive. Her wavering soprano carries a clear, moonlit tone with an earthy rawness that can hush a room. In the 70s and 80s she made very limited edition recordings with guitarist Loren Mazzacane Connors, crafting songs that seem to drift and dissolve into the air. She later stepped back to raise a family, train problem horses, and lead special music programs for children. Public attention grew again when Richard Linklater featured her song "Come Here" in the 1995 film "Before Sunrise," which helped bring both earlier releases and newer material back into circulation, including a tribute collection with contributions from Josephine Foster, Bill Callahan, Devendra Banhart, Meg Baird, and Scout Nibblet. Since 2017 she has been recording and performing with New Haven, CT guitarist David Shapiro. Mountain Movers, a long-running New Haven group, currently features Dan Greene on guitar and vocals, Rick Omonte on bass, Kryssi Battalene on guitar, and Ross Menze on drums. This lineup has played together for over a decade, first surfacing on a run of singles between 2011 and 2013. Their 2015 album "Death Magic" on New Haven label Safety Meeting marked a turning point, and a trio of releases on Trouble In Mind followed. The self-titled "Mountain Movers" in 2015 reintroduced the band to a wider audience, "Pink Skies" in 2018 showcased a group fully confident in its strengths, and 2020's "World What World," written and recorded before the world shut down, shifted focus back toward guitarist and songwriter Dan Greene’s poetic tales of magical realism. Their ninth album, "Walking After Dark," finds a balance between Greene’s lyrical songs and the band’s spacious, long-form improvisations.

the Mountain Goats at College Street Music Hall (New Haven)

WPKN Community Radio 89.5 FM presents The Mountain Goats at College Street Music Hall. Known for songs that blend historical inquiry, autobiography, and spiritual motifs, the band continues to stretch its sound and storytelling. Their album Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan began as a late-night dream and became a full musical, produced and co-written by multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas. It traces a shipwrecked trio through scarcity, vision, and hard-won compassion, balancing singalong moments with intimate, reflective pieces and nods to the early boombox era. On the record, core members John Darnielle, Matt Douglas, and Jon Wurster expand the palette with bassist Cameron Ralston alongside guests Tommy Stinson, harpist Mikaela Davis, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, weaving in textures like synth, pedal steel, and fretless bass. This is an all-ages event.

Composer, bassist, and improviser Max Johnson unveils his new sextet in the first performance of "Without Fear," an evening-length piece that gathers the sounds he has explored over the last fifteen years. The ensemble features Anna Webber on tenor saxophone and flute, Yuma Uesaka on soprano saxophone and clarinet, Nate Wooley on trumpet, Lester St. Louis on cello, Max Johnson on double bass, and Jeff Davis on drumset and vibraphone. The music moves among jazz, chamber writing, folk textures, free improvisation, and progressive rock, creating a living musical ecosystem that gives each player room to be heard while unifying the group within Johnson’s vision. The project reflects his extensive work as a performer and composer, including appearances and recordings with Anthony Braxton, Geri Allen, the Daedalus Quartet, David Grisman, Tyshawn Sorey, Mary Halvorson, the Mivos Quartet, and members of Frank Zappa’s bands. The Mercy Velvet Project

Co-presented by kamrDANCE and Yale Schwarzman Center with support from Yale Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies, The Mercy Velvet Project brings the little-heard 1999 album Live in Vain by Mercy Velvet to life onstage through a fully embodied re-creation. Across all nine tracks in their original order, musicians and dancers move together to examine what makes us human and why community is essential to survival. A queer and femme ensemble confronts the barriers to love, discovering how the act of giving and receiving mercy can open a bridge to wholeness and hope. The album’s story unfolds through tap used as percussion, contemporary choreography, original text, and live instrumentation on bass, guitar, vocals, and electronics. More than twenty-five years after the record’s release, kamrDANCE and collaborators expand its legacy through their identities and today’s political realities, highlighting vulnerability and the shared work of seeking an antidote in mercy that helps lead meaningful lives. Functioning as a rock concert and an immersive sonic experience, the piece underscores how inseparable dance and music can be. Choreographer Alexis Robbins grew up with this music, inspired by its rhythms and lyrics during living room dances. Her father, Mark Robbins, was the drummer and co-composer for Mercy Velvet, working with lyricist and vocalist Deb Lili and guitarist Lou Lili. Together with Musical Director Christie Echols and a team of collaborators, Robbins brings Live in Vain to audiences in a premiere presentation.

Icons of the Air: Symbols, Art, & the Great Eagle Debate

Prompted by the recent formal designation of the bald eagle as the United States’ national bird, this free, all-ages drawing workshop invites participants to explore the bird’s meaning in American culture while building practical sketching skills. Connecticut-based illustrator and teaching artist Megan Jeffery leads the session at the Pardee-Morris House, providing materials and clear instruction. The program begins with a guided look at how the eagle appears across centuries of imagery, then moves into step-by-step drawing focused on anatomy, power, and expressive detail. Attendees also weigh in on which emblem best represents the nation today, comparing the eagle with historic alternatives such as Benjamin Franklin’s favored wild turkey or proposing their own candidates. Interactive polling culminates in a live results announcement. Designed to boost confidence for all experience levels, the workshop emphasizes observation, creativity, and active participation. Presented as part of NH250 with support from community partner WSHU 91.1 FM and the New Haven Museum.
