The 15th annual Newington Rotary golf tournament benefiting Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation returns to Indian Hill Country Club in Newington. This year’s event pays tribute to Charles Lowe, a founding member of the Newington Rotary from 1960 who remained active for 66 years. He was a steady presence at meetings, volunteered often, and supported causes close to his heart. Alex’s Lemonade was especially meaningful to him, inspired in part by the loss of his younger brother to childhood cancer. The tournament supports a mission that began in 2000 when four-year-old Alex Scott, while undergoing treatment for neuroblastoma, started a lemonade stand to raise money for doctors working to help children like her. She passed away in 2004 at the age of eight after raising more than $1 million toward finding a cure. The Newington Rotary learned about the foundation through Alex’s aunt, Sue Flynn, and established this annual event to direct a significant portion of proceeds to the cause. Across 14 prior tournaments, the club has contributed $325,000 to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. More than 30 vegan vendors will serve sweet and savory options across a closed-street footprint, creating a lively hub of flavor and culture. This Alzheimer’s Association caregiver support group offers a safe, welcoming space for caregivers, family members, and friends of people living with dementia. Led by Patty O’Brian, CDP, a dementia specialist with the Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging, the conversation focuses on building connections, trading practical solutions to caregiving challenges, discussing ways to cope, sharing feelings and concerns, and learning about community resources.
