Lost in the Summer of '69: A Conversation with Eliza Knight

USA Today bestselling author Eliza Knight will be in conversation with L.L. Kirchner, author of Florida Girls, to celebrate Knight’s new novel, Lost in the Summer of '69. Books will be available for purchase, and preordering is recommended to secure a signed copy. Set in the music-filled summer of 1969, the novel follows three generations of women. Eleanor Bell, facing the possibility of soon losing her ability to sing and play guitar, heads west to follow the festival scene and reclaim the thrill of performing. When she leaves without telling anyone, her daughter Leanne teams up with her own daughter, Nora, who is about to become one of Yale’s first female undergraduates. After hearing Eleanor on the radio singing, they set off in a Lincoln Continental on a cross-country search, always just behind the woman Johnny Carson has called the Dame of Rock and Roll. The story blends nostalgia with the warmth of summer and celebrates savoring the encore, whatever the next act brings.

2026 FSDA Freedive Spearfishing State Championship

The Florida Skin Divers Association invites freedive spearfishermen and women to compete in a one-day state championship at Anclote River Park's boat ramp in Tarpon Springs, Florida, with a focus on spirited competition and camaraderie. Teams and individuals earn recognition through an aggregate point system, and a separate Big Fish honor highlights the single heaviest catch of the tournament. Trophies are awarded to the top three teams and top three overall individuals, along with a first place Big Fish trophy. Special prizes include $100 gift certificates for the largest sheepshead, mangrove snapper, grunt, and hogfish. Teams consist of three divers, and both men and women may compete. Guest individuals from other councils are welcome on teams, however only paid FSDA members may qualify to represent the association at the USOA National Skindiving Championships in Hawaii, with the top three teams and top three individual competitors earning that opportunity. Pre-registration is available at $140 per team with a signed team waiver by the stated deadline, and late registration on tournament day is $180. Cash, check, Venmo, and PayPal are accepted, and FSDA teams must be members in good standing with dues paid in full. The tournament zone extends up to 10 miles north and 10 miles south of Anclote River Marker 1 and remains inside 60 feet of water. All competitors must hold a valid State of Florida fishing license. Divers and captains are required to attend the tournament briefing at the dock. Boats depart the dock and stage at the last green channel marker 1 to be counted before hunting begins. All competitors and fish must be in the weigh-in line by the cut-off, and late arrivals are disqualified. Awards are presented following the weigh-in, and if weather conditions deteriorate a small craft advisory or rain date may be used, with updates posted on the FSDA Facebook page and a final determination made at the captain's meeting. Eligible species include mangrove, yellowtail and cubera snapper, hogfish, grey grunt, sheepshead, flounder, Spanish mackerel, cobia, almaco jacks, king mackerel and permit, with specified minimum sizes and per-diver limits in place and all current FWC size and bag limits applying. Each diver may turn in up to 25 eligible fish, and every diver's catch must be kept separate on its own stringer or in its own cooler or bag prior to weigh-in. If more than 25 fish are presented, the largest fish are removed until only 25 remain, and exceeding state bag limits disqualifies the diver and catch. Swapping fish between competitors is not allowed, and fish must be presented fresh on ice. Scoring awards one point per pound and one point per fish, with a maximum of 21 points for any single fish. The Big Fish competition is calculated separately after team weigh-ins, and the heaviest eligible fish wins. Unsportsmanlike conduct or violations of state laws or tournament rules may result in disqualification. Protests may be filed with the tournament chairperson and are decided by a committee of team captains, with the chairperson voting as a tie breaker and all decisions final. Observers are not required, this is an honor-system tournament, and registration fees are nonrefundable.

War Virgin, My Journey of Repression, Temptation and Liberation

Laura Westley’s War Virgin is a candid, deeply personal stage work that examines the inner and outer costs of war through the perspective of a young female soldier. Drawn from Westley’s own background as a United States Military Academy graduate and Gulf War veteran, it follows a journey from rigorous training to the complicated realities of deployment, revealing what service asks of the body, mind, and spirit. The production blends unvarnished storytelling with moments of movement, music, and sharp humor. As one soldier navigates opposing forces like strength and vulnerability, camaraderie and isolation, and duty and personal identity, the piece confronts trauma, power dynamics, and the barriers women face in a male-dominated environment. At its core it is a story of survival, self-discovery, and reclaiming one’s voice. Tickets are $27.

Launch from the north end of Fred Howard Beach and paddle across open water to the southern end of Anclote Key. The base route is about 4 miles, with the option to add more distance. Plan to use the outgoing tide to reach the island and the incoming tide for the return. It may be hard to head back right away, so consider packing lunch or snacks and allowing for extra time. This is a moderate paddle due to open water and distance, and those with limited experience should take caution. The lighthouse is not open for general access during summer, with entry available only through a private tour that requires a $300 donation. There is no participation fee, parking is $5, and everything is weather and conditions permitting. Rental equipment is available by arranging with the organizer.

You Da Bomb Baby!!

A creative, hands-on class devoted to botanical bath bombs brings together art, chemistry, and the herbal roots of soaking rituals. Attendees craft indulgent fizzing treats with plant-based ingredients like therapeutic herbs, essential oils, mineral salts, and gentle botanical powders. The session explores why these spheres bubble in water, and looks to bathing traditions practiced by the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, Chinese, and Japanese, where botanicals, aromatic oils, clays, and salts supported relaxation, purification, relief from aches, spiritual cleansing, skincare, nervous system calm, fever care, circulation, and reproductive wellness. Romans fragranced public baths with herbs and oils, while Japanese soaking customs used seasonal plants and woods to restore balance. Modern bath bombs build on these histories by pairing aromatherapy, skin conditioning, and effervescence, with the familiar fizz created when citric acid reacts with baking soda in water to release carbon dioxide. Guided instruction covers herbal formulation, choosing stable natural colorants, safe essential oil blending, and the structural principles that help bath bombs hold their shape and texture at home. The curriculum highlights calendula, lavender, rose, chamomile, butterfly pea flower, hibiscus, colloidal oats, oat milk powder, Dead Sea and Epsom salts, and clay minerals, along with skin-soothing approaches, support for the nervous system, color stability in natural recipes, and the energetic qualities of herbs within bathing practices. On the practical side, participants develop a personalized formula, experiment with natural coloring, pack mixtures into molds, create layered designs or add floral accents, compose scent profiles, and learn proper packaging and storage. Technical guidance includes humidity management, selecting effective binding agents, balancing oils to powders, achieving firm compression, and best practices for drying and curing, plus how to avoid cracking, expansion, or crumbling. Roots & Ritual: Summer Sizzle Tallow Sun Cream

At The Funk, this hands-on herbal workshop shows how to craft a nourishing tallow-based sun cream with traditional botanicals and mineral protection. Explore the roots of using rendered animal fats in skin care alongside safe, modern methods to create a rich, water-resistant balm for skin that faces sun, wind, and heat. Learn the differences between mineral and chemical approaches to sun protection, how to infuse herbs into oils, how to formulate safely, and how to tailor a recipe to personal needs. The class highlights supportive plants such as calendula, lavender, plantain, chamomile, green tea, sea buckthorn, and aloe vera, and explains tallow’s fatty acids and vitamins that help reinforce the skin barrier. Guided lessons cover the benefits of moderate sunlight, the distinction between UVA and UVB rays, signs of overexposure, and the roles of antioxidants and emollients. Instruction also addresses rendering and purifying tallow, differences between grass-fed and conventional sources, working with non-nano zinc oxide as a physical barrier and proper dispersion techniques, plus the limitations of homemade SPF and the importance of reapplication and protective clothing. A dedicated safety segment sets clear expectations for herbal preparations, encourages patch testing and careful essential oil dilution, and reinforces sun-smart habits. Each attendee takes home a jar of handmade herbal tallow sun cream, a printed recipe booklet, an herbal infusion guide, storage and shelf-life tips, and a resource list for quality ingredients. The session closes with a simple guiding philosophy that values nourishment and respect for the body’s natural defenses while pairing time-honored practices with modern safety.
