Native Plant Sale: Grow Your Own Habitat!

Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden, 5210 College Rd, Key West · verified Sep 11
    See details

Grow a thriving Key West habitat at a native plant sale that highlights species tailored to the island’s climate. Explore a carefully chosen selection that nourishes butterflies, bees, birds, and other pollinators while fitting seamlessly into local ecosystems. Nursery staff and volunteers are available to help match plants to your space, light, and gardening goals, whether you are beginning a new garden or refreshing an existing landscape. Native plants make a meaningful difference. They provide food and shelter for wildlife, help rebuild natural plant communities, conserve water by being adapted to local conditions, and naturally resist many pests so fewer chemicals are needed. They are well suited to local soils, heat, humidity, and rainfall, which makes them easier to care for and a smart choice for long-term sustainability. Visit the Compost Village to drop off kitchen scraps and support a community compost program, watch live demonstrations from UF/IFAS Master Gardeners, and take home finished compost to give new plants a strong start. The day also features Nature and Nurture activities in the tropical garden, including a children’s nature art workshop and a relaxing Prime of Life Yoga session among the trees. The children’s workshop is $10, with free entry for members, and the yoga class offers a $20 drop-in option. The Key West Botanical Garden Society, Inc. is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit, and the Garden is publicly owned and operated as a passive, natural resource-based public outdoor recreational site.

Nature is Art: Children’s Art Workshop

Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden, 5210 College Rd, Key West
    See details

Children and their caregivers team up for an art-making workshop at the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden, where creativity and the natural world go hand in hand. In collaboration with the Key West Art & Historical Society, each session highlights a different artist and technique, offering a fresh nature theme to explore. Participants create three to four projects using natural and recycled materials in an engaging outdoor setting, with time to visit the playground and wander the Garden before or after the workshop. The workshop coincides with the Native Plant Sale and Compost Village demonstration, so families can drop off kitchen scraps, see composting in action, and take home plants that support local ecosystems. Advance registration is required and limited to 15 children per session, with separate signups for each workshop date. Pricing is free for Garden members and 10 dollars per child for nonmembers. Parents stay and participate with their children, as this is not a drop off program. Membership includes complimentary workshop access and benefits available throughout the year.

A Tribute to the Songs of Pete & Wayne, with Pete Jarvis, Larry Strickland, Ray Fogg & Friends

Key West Theater, 512 Eaton St, Key West
    See details

Key West Theater hosts a raucous salute to the irreverent songbook of Pete and Wayne, led by Pete Jarvis with Larry Strickland, Ray Fogg, and guest artists. Returning after packing the house last year, this celebration revives the duo’s comic tunes while honoring the legacy of the late Wayne Hammond. For more than two decades, Pete and Wayne were mainstays of the local scene at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, and they traveled up the East Coast from Florida to Maine, through Put-in-Bay, Ohio, and across the country before circling back to Key West for many seasons. Their catalog blends grown-up humor with gleefully juvenile mischief, and while the original act cannot be remade, this tribute keeps the songs alive as Pete shares the stories behind them and performs alongside friends. Expect the theater’s usual polish to yield to the duo’s notoriously questionable morals and the loyal crowd that embraces them. Ages 21 and over, and crafted for those who enjoy proudly immature fun.
