Brechner Speaker Series: Tracing Florida Journeys with Leslie Kemp Poole

Part of the Brechner Speaker Series, this talk features historian and environmental studies scholar Leslie Kemp Poole exploring how Florida’s landscapes, history, and literature connect. A Floridian whose family has lived in the state for four generations, she will draw on her 2024 book Tracing Florida Journeys: Explorers, Travelers, and Landscapes Then and Now, along with years spent studying and retracing naturalist William Bartram’s travels across Florida. Poole is an associate professor of environmental studies at Rollins College in Winter Park and holds a PhD in history from the University of Florida. Her work on Florida’s environmental past has appeared in academic publications, documentaries, and public history projects, including the PBS films In Marjorie’s Wake and The Swamp from American Experience. Earlier in her career, she reported for several newspapers, including the Orlando Sentinel, contributing to a nationally recognized series on Florida’s growth management challenges.
