International Urban Sketchers Week 2026 - Pop Up Sketch

Urban Sketchers Sarasota kicks off International Urban Sketchers Week with a relaxed morning of drawing on location at the historic Lord-Higel House and the surrounding area in Venice. The day starts with an optional coffee social on the porch, followed by a brief meet and greet under the oak tree by the bike racks before sketchers head out. Participants can set up around the coffee house or wander to nearby John Nolan Park, which is bordered by several buildings from the 1920s. Park benches are available, and a small stool can be helpful for capturing views of the house. Later, everyone reconvenes at the coffee house for a shared display of sketches and a quick group photo. One of the oldest surviving structures in Sarasota County, the Lord-Higel House was built in 1896 by citrus grower Joseph H. Lord and later served as the home of grove manager George Higel. Saved from demolition and moved twice before being restored, it now operates as a community coffee house with distinctive architectural details that make engaging sketch subjects. Nearby options include shaded spots in John Nolan Park with views back toward the house, as well as the Historic Apartment District just beyond the park, where Mediterranean-style buildings from the 1920s Florida land boom offer strong shapes and repeating patterns to draw. Parking is available at the coffee house and on surrounding streets near John Nolan Park. After the sketching session, participants may stay for lunch and conversation. The cafe serves drinks, pastries, sandwiches, and light fare.
