Part of the Pregame: Nationals Bound two-day series from JC Shows, this gathering at the DoubleTree by Hilton Cedar Rapids Convention Complex highlights trading card games and collectibles. Expect vintage and modern Pokémon singles, retail and hobby sealed wax, One Piece cards, and a broad selection of TCG. The floor also showcases custom artwork and a notable Star Wars collection spanning three tables. Vendor lineups and TCG varieties change from day to day. Vendors who carry both TCG and sports cards may include sports-related cards and collectibles in their inventory, although the show is not promoted as a sports card event. The collector weekend continues the following day with a Sports and Pokémon Card and Collectibles Show offering additional vendors, memorabilia, and hobby finds. Vendor tables are limited. This open studio offers a relaxed, welcoming space where students in kindergarten through 12th grade can explore art, music, and their own ideas. Participants may work on personal projects, try new materials, combine different media, or experiment with instruments in an encouraging, come as you are setting. Whether the focus is painting, drawing, sculpting, writing a song, playing guitar, building something from scratch, or simply following a creative spark, the format provides freedom and time to move at an individual pace. Staff and artists from the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy are available with guidance, encouragement, and suggestions while still supporting independent exploration. It is free for EIAA members and $5 for nonmembers. The studio is offered most Saturdays except holiday weekends, creating a regular chance for kids and teens to connect, create, try something new, and spend time in a supportive arts community that feels safe and inspiring.

Imaginative Illustrators Summer Kid Camp

Designed for book lovers and imaginative thinkers, this summer camp blends storytelling with illustration. Young artists explore characters and worlds, from inventing a new “Wild Thing” to dreaming up a “Purple Crayon” style adventure. Each day offers a fresh creative challenge, and by the end participants take home four illustrated story pages and a short sketchbook story. All materials are provided, including watercolor paper and sketchbooks, watercolor pencils, micron pens, watercolor paints, crayons, brushes, palettes, and paper towels. At Illuminations Cedar Rapids, the Witches Cauldron Gathering offers an evening of conversation and connection for witches and those who are witch friendly. This session centers on Lughnasadh and the Wheel of the Year, introducing the modern Pagan cycle that follows the sun through eight evenly spaced seasonal festivals. Lughnasadh is a harvest celebration set between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox, a time to recognize the fruits of effort, express gratitude for the earth’s abundance, strengthen community ties, and enjoy the vigor of high summer as attention begins to turn toward fall. The featured crystal for the month is Citrine, a stone associated with abundance, sunlight, and manifestation. Dennis Mahoney presents a monthly immersive storytelling series that creates a space for unguarded truth. Each gathering centers on one guest who has crossed a meaningful threshold, and together they enter an unscripted conversation about what changed, what it cost, and what opened on the other side. It is not a lecture, a panel, or a live podcast. It feels more like a late-night exchange where someone finally says the real thing. The first installment is a special exception, with Dennis onstage alone to share his own path in this format and to lay the groundwork for what follows. Before the evening ends, he offers a single-line introduction to the next guest, just enough to spark curiosity. The setting is the Southside Theatre inside The Olympic in Cedar Rapids, with intentionally limited seating for a close, attentive room. There is no audience Q&A, and there is time afterward to connect. You are not asked to participate, only to be present. Some nights bring laughter, others land in quiet, all are designed to leave you with something to carry. Journals are available at the back if you want to capture what surfaces, and Dennis reads each one. Dennis draws on 24 years running Mahoney’s pub in Cedar Rapids, experience in telecommunications, service as a blackwater scuba diver with the Linn County Underwater Search and Recovery team, and life as a facilitator, husband, father, and student of what happiness really means. He is not a therapist or a conventional life coach. He calls himself a transformational facilitator, though he prefers happiness advocate. The Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department brings its Rollin’ Recmobile to Cleveland Park, offering a summer visit with free activities and a designated free lunch stop. This mobile program travels between parks around the city, with colorful vans setting up each week to host games and experiences that spark connection and chase away summer boredom. There is no cost to participate, and visitors can drop in at any park on the route as often as they like. Locations are selected to reach a wide range of neighborhoods, including areas where getting to other parks may be difficult. Plans may change during severe weather, and stops can be delayed or canceled if storms develop. Mobile Visiting Artist Workshop: Hobbit Mug

Celebrate the new Magic: The Gathering Hobbit-themed release by crafting a cozy mug inspired by the Shire. Visiting artist Taylor Friese leads a hands-on pottery session as the Iowa Ceramics Center & Glass Studio’s Mobile Clay Studio sets up at RePlay Gaming. Participants start with a professionally wheel-thrown mug made by ICCGS, then turn it into a unique fantasy piece by attaching a handle, adding a round hobbit-style door, carving stone details, and personalizing it with their own creative touches. No prior clay experience is needed, and the workshop is recommended for ages 8 and up. The $55 per person fee includes a ready-to-decorate mug, step-by-step instruction from Taylor, all clay, tools, and materials, along with glazing and kiln firing. Finished pieces will be glazed, fired, and available for pickup at the Iowa Ceramics Center & Glass Studio three weeks after the workshop.

NewBo City Market hosts a no-cost weekly music series that turns the Bankers Trust Stage in the Market Yard into a summer soundtrack. This installment features Vinyl Alibi and fits into a season that mixes local talent with touring performers. Entry is open to the public on a first come, first served basis, and guests may bring lawn chairs to relax during the performance. Eastern Iowa Arts Academy staff and artists are available with guidance, encouragement, and ideas, while students are equally free to chart their own path. Ecstatic Dance

Ecstatic Dance brings a free-form, conscious movement experience to Cedar Rapids, guided by the 5Rhythms approach developed by Gabrielle Roth. Across a 90-minute arc, the music carries dancers through five distinct energies, beginning with gentle flow, rising into full release, and settling back into stillness. There are no set steps, no partner needed, and no single correct way to move. The soundtrack leads while each person follows their own body’s wisdom. The space is kept barefoot, phone free, talk free, free of added scents such as perfume, essential oils, smoke, and strong body odor, and fully sober. These boundaries create a container that supports presence and authenticity so the floor becomes a place to be yourself and move as you need. Dennis opens and closes the gathering in circle and offers clear orientation so first-timers and regulars feel comfortable and ready. There is time before the opening circle for stretching and settling in. This gathering is part of the Corridor Dance Collective, a growing community from the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City area devoted to authentic movement, connection, and showing up as themselves. Suggested donation is 15 dollars, and no one is turned away for lack of funds. All bodies are welcome, ages 16 and up. Summer Gifts: Joy, Solace, Hope presents a new watercolor exhibit by Rev. Dr. Sherrie Ilg, a former St. Paul’s pastor, on view in the Upper Room Gallery. Drawing on close attention to nature and the turning of the seasons, these pieces explore the interplay of water and pigment on cotton paper, where careful intention and unplanned movement come together to invite reflection. Since retiring from St. Paul’s in 2023, Ilg has embraced watercolor and shares a sampling shaped by summertime inspiration. K9Splash turns Bever Park Pool in Cedar Rapids into a canine pool party filled with splashing, paddling, and wagging tails. The event welcomes dogs of every swimming style, from bold cannonballers to cautious paw dippers. The day begins with a dedicated swim for small dogs under 15 inches tall, then opens for dogs of all sizes. Admission is $15 per dog, per day, with cash preferred. A weekend discount is available when paying for both days at once on the first day, reducing the second day’s fee by $5. The main event is headlined by Mutilation Barbecue, a death metal force from Cleveland active since 2020, with Dying Remains from Calgary among the featured acts. The pre-show is led by Chicago brutal death metal band Gored Embrace. Friday in the Black Hole room features Gored Embrace, Takacs, Toxic Hell, Starved, Fungal Mass, and Crucifilth. Asphalt Apocalypse is a weekend drift event at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids. The event runs rain or shine and includes time on track for drivers, along with spectator openings and scheduled hot laps throughout Saturday and Sunday. Gates open for drivers and spectators at set times, with drivers meeting sessions before track goes hot. There will also be on-site food trucks, and everyone must pay at the gate and sign the waiver. The Happy Together Tour, now in its 17th year, brings a nationwide summer showcase packed with more than sixty Billboard Top 40 hits from the 1960s and 1970s. The lineup includes The Association, The Troggs, Jason Scheff who served as Chicago's lead singer from 1985 to 2016, Gary Puckett, The Fortunes, Ron Dante representing The Archies and The Turtles, The Vogues, and The Cowsills. The season-ending Cedar Rapids Night Meet brings the community back to Hawkeye Downs Speedway and Expo Center for one more packed night on the track. Presented by Brown's West Branch Ford, the gathering welcomes all cars, trucks and bikes and has a history of drawing enthusiasts from across the Midwest. Parking on the track costs $10 per vehicle, payable in cash. Walk-in spectator admission is $5 per person, and children 12 and under enter free. A large spectator lot is available. For the best chance at a spot on the track, arrive early. Groups that show up together may park together, and saving spaces is not allowed. Staff will regulate access to the track, and everyday drivers should use the spectator lot. VIP packages offer early entry, prime reserved parking and photos of your vehicle on the track. Food and drinks will be available from Back40 BBQ, Street Bites and Hawkeye Downs Concessions, with a Night Meet special from Grind Coffee. Music will be provided by a live DJ from On The House. Later in the evening, the After Hours Performance 2-Step exhaust contest awards a trophy and $50 to the winner. Safety rules will be enforced. Burnouts and hot lapping are prohibited, and a 5 mph speed limit applies. Organizers are also seeking additional sponsors to help reduce costs for attendees in the future, and at present there is a walk-in fee for spectators.

McGrath Amphitheatre hosts an evening of classic rock featuring Jefferson Starship with Pure Prairie League, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and Firefall. Jefferson Starship marks its 50th year with a catalog that includes three platinum and eight gold releases and many Top 40 singles. Conceived by Paul Kantner as a collaborative musical adventure, the band has grown into a powerhouse on the road, performing across all 50 states and on five continents. The current lineup features founding member David Freiberg, along with Donny Baldwin on drums, Chris Smith on keyboards, Jude Gold on guitar, and Cathy Richardson on vocals and guitar, continuing the exploratory spirit Kantner championed. Pure Prairie League brings decades of country rock, highlighted by Craig Fuller’s Amie alongside favorites like Falling In and Out of Love and Let Me Love You Tonight. Atlanta Rhythm Section delivers Southern rock classics such as So Into You, Champagne Jam, Imaginary Lover, Homesick, and Spooky, backed by a 15-album legacy. Firefall, formed in Boulder in 1974, rounds out the bill with radio favorites including You Are the Woman, Just Remember I Love You, Strange Way, Cinderella, Headed for a Fall, and Staying with It, continuing a five-decade journey led by founder Jock Bartley.

Take part in a 5K run or walk and a Family Fun Walk as part of the Especially for You Race Against Breast Cancer. Opening ceremonies lead into the start, and the route begins and ends at Mercy Medical Center. Participation supports free breast care and gynecological services, underscoring the importance of early detection and helping community members who face financial barriers to lifesaving care.

Ole 60 - Off The Grid Tour

Ole 60 brings the Off The Grid Tour to McGrath Amphitheatre with a blend of indie rock edge, folk craft, and country roots. Formed in Hawesville in Hancock County, Kentucky, the six-piece broke through in 2024 when smoke & a light landed on Spotify’s U.S. Viral Top 50 and their debut EP, three twenty four, reached the top of Apple Music’s Country Albums chart ahead of established names like Zach Bryan and Morgan Wallen. The rise continued with the second EP, Songs About You, and the viral track Thoughts of You, which hit No. 1 on TikTok’s all-genre Viral 50 Music chart. Drawing inspiration from Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, Radiohead, John Prine, and Nicholas Jamerson, the band has amassed more than 700 million streams worldwide. Billboard has highlighted their strong musicianship, adventurous sounds that range from psychedelic textures to intimate arrangements, and vivid storytelling. The tour follows the release of their debut album, Smokestack Town, along with the surprise single, Can’t Take It With You.
