Meet Horror Author: Christopher Micklos | TICK TOWN

Meet horror author and filmmaker Christopher A. Micklos at Shady Character Books for a relaxed meet-and-greet and book signing centered on his first pulp horror novel, TICK TOWN. The tale plunges a small Midwestern vacation spot into chaos as huge mutated ticks turn the area into their feeding grounds, and Micklos frames it as a heartfelt salute to classic giant-insect cinema and the pulpy paperbacks and comics of the seventies and eighties. Acclaimed voices in horror have praised it as a lively return to the golden era of creature-driven scares, recalling the paperback hits that helped define the genre and the outbreak tales associated with authors like Guy N. Smith. Micklos is an award-winning filmmaker and a frequently published writer of horror-focused fiction and nonfiction, and he is based in Madison, Wisconsin.

May 2026 Pet Social

At The Pedaler’s Fork patio, this structured Pet Social focuses on practicing real-life skills in a real-life setting. Guests can enjoy lunch or a drink while pets work on calm behavior, leash manners, and relaxing around other pets and people. It is open to the public, and friends are welcome. Anyone bringing a pet must RSVP and submit vaccine records in advance, while those who are unsure if their pet is patio-ready are welcome to attend without a pet and observe. RSVP is required for all humans and pets. Participants bringing a pet who have not done in-person training with King’s Creatures must complete three steps: submit the RSVP form, email vaccine records, and confirm the RSVP through PocketSuite. Spots are confirmed only after all steps are completed. Training will cover relaxing on a patio, calm behavior around other pets, loose leash walking to and from the patio, settling under or next to a table, ignoring food, people, and distractions, and building handler communication and advocacy skills. Please bring a standard 6-foot leash with no retractables, treats, water for your pet, a place mat if you have one, poop bags, comfortable shoes, and plenty of patience and humor. Arriving a little early helps pets get a short walk and settle before sitting down. This is not a dog park and pets will not greet one another. The goal is calm, neutral, relaxed behavior in a public space, which is a key foundation for therapy animals and adventure pets. Follow the core rules: no on-leash greetings, do not approach another pet unless invited, give working teams space, and advocate for your pet’s needs. If a pet is barking, pulling, or unable to settle, additional distance and a training plan will be provided. Attendance is free, with a suggested $5 donation per pet and handler team to support Living Creatures Ministry, which trains therapy animal teams serving Lutheran congregations and community organizations.
