Advance registration is required, and the cost is $5 per child for ages 3 to 17.

Mobile Visiting Artist Workshop: Hobbit Mug

Celebrate the new Magic: The Gathering Hobbit-themed release by crafting a cozy mug inspired by the Shire. Visiting artist Taylor Friese leads a hands-on pottery session as the Iowa Ceramics Center & Glass Studio’s Mobile Clay Studio sets up at RePlay Gaming. Participants start with a professionally wheel-thrown mug made by ICCGS, then turn it into a unique fantasy piece by attaching a handle, adding a round hobbit-style door, carving stone details, and personalizing it with their own creative touches. No prior clay experience is needed, and the workshop is recommended for ages 8 and up. The $55 per person fee includes a ready-to-decorate mug, step-by-step instruction from Taylor, all clay, tools, and materials, along with glazing and kiln firing. Finished pieces will be glazed, fired, and available for pickup at the Iowa Ceramics Center & Glass Studio three weeks after the workshop.

Rock the Block 2026

NewBo City Market hosts a no-cost weekly music series that turns the Bankers Trust Stage in the Market Yard into a summer soundtrack. This installment features Vinyl Alibi and fits into a season that mixes local talent with touring performers. Entry is open to the public on a first come, first served basis, and guests may bring lawn chairs to relax during the performance. To keep things running smoothly, outside food and beverages are not allowed other than reusable water bottles with water, and coolers are not permitted. Smoking is not allowed. Any alcoholic drinks bought on the property must be enjoyed within the designated boundaries. By entering the grounds, attendees consent to photography, audio, and video recording without claims to royalties. An evening bike ride rolls across Cedar Rapids with six planned stops, raising funds for the American Diabetes Association in memory of Mike Hoppe (1967–2013). Riders are encouraged to light up their bikes, gather friends, and make a night of it. Sign in takes place at Pickle Palace, the ride sets out from there and visits Shack Tavern, Kickstand, Pedaler’s Fork, and Sag Wagon, then concludes at Big Grove. The cost is $20 per person or $35 per couple. All proceeds support the American Diabetes Association.

Blocktoberfest featuring The Pork Tornadoes and more

Blocktoberfest 5 returns to downtown Cedar Rapids for an outdoor night of live music and fun. The Pork Tornadoes lead the bill, with Reggae Rapids and School of Rock adding to the energy. A relaxed, welcoming open studio invites students in kindergarten through 12th grade to explore visual art and music in a come as you are setting. Whether the goal is to paint, draw, sculpt, write a song, play guitar, or build something from scratch, there is space to create at an individual pace. Ecstatic Dance

Ecstatic Dance brings a free-form, conscious movement experience to Cedar Rapids, guided by the 5Rhythms approach developed by Gabrielle Roth. Across a 90-minute arc, the music carries dancers through five distinct energies, beginning with gentle flow, rising into full release, and settling back into stillness. There are no set steps, no partner needed, and no single correct way to move. The soundtrack leads while each person follows their own body’s wisdom. The space is kept barefoot, phone free, talk free, free of added scents such as perfume, essential oils, smoke, and strong body odor, and fully sober. These boundaries create a container that supports presence and authenticity so the floor becomes a place to be yourself and move as you need. Dennis opens and closes the gathering in circle and offers clear orientation so first-timers and regulars feel comfortable and ready. There is time before the opening circle for stretching and settling in. This gathering is part of the Corridor Dance Collective, a growing community from the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City area devoted to authentic movement, connection, and showing up as themselves. Suggested donation is 15 dollars, and no one is turned away for lack of funds. All bodies are welcome, ages 16 and up. Summer Gifts: Joy, Solace, Hope presents a new watercolor exhibit by Rev. Dr. Sherrie Ilg, a former St. Paul’s pastor, on view in the Upper Room Gallery. Drawing on close attention to nature and the turning of the seasons, these pieces explore the interplay of water and pigment on cotton paper, where careful intention and unplanned movement come together to invite reflection. Since retiring from St. Paul’s in 2023, Ilg has embraced watercolor and shares a sampling shaped by summertime inspiration. Sharpen technique, enhance control, and build confidence in a focused three day Turning Intensive at Prestige Dance Studio. Training covers how to set up and finish turns with precision, ankle conditioning with proper alignment and placement, engaging the core for steadier balance, and effective spotting for better control. Iowa’s Jazz Station celebrates the start of its next half-century with a program highlighting rising talent from around the state. The concert features the Joey Schnoebelen Quintet, led by a University of Iowa graduate who balanced studies in music performance and accounting while touring with The King’s Brass. His accolades include selection to the Disney All-American College Band, recognition in Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Jazz Challenge, and multiple solo quarterfinal appearances at the National Trumpet Competition. He serves as associate principal trumpet with the Dubuque Symphony and also performs with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony, Ten of Soul, Joe Mattingly’s Newman Singers, and his own jazz group, while working as a CPA by day. The Young Artists set spotlights Night School from North Scott, a soul, funk, and pop ensemble in its fifth year. Their busy schedule has included The Rust Belt in Moline, The Tangled Wood in Bettendorf, and The Redstone Room in Davenport, along with a concert and clinic at the Iowa Bandmasters Association Conference and a feature appearance for the 2025 State of Iowa School Board Convention. Asphalt Apocalypse is a weekend drift event at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids. The event runs rain or shine and includes time on track for drivers, along with spectator openings and scheduled hot laps throughout Saturday and Sunday. Gates open for drivers and spectators at set times, with drivers meeting sessions before track goes hot. There will also be on-site food trucks, and everyone must pay at the gate and sign the waiver. The season-ending Cedar Rapids Night Meet brings the community back to Hawkeye Downs Speedway and Expo Center for one more packed night on the track. Presented by Brown's West Branch Ford, the gathering welcomes all cars, trucks and bikes and has a history of drawing enthusiasts from across the Midwest. Parking on the track costs $10 per vehicle, payable in cash. Walk-in spectator admission is $5 per person, and children 12 and under enter free. A large spectator lot is available. For the best chance at a spot on the track, arrive early. Groups that show up together may park together, and saving spaces is not allowed. Staff will regulate access to the track, and everyday drivers should use the spectator lot. VIP packages offer early entry, prime reserved parking and photos of your vehicle on the track. Food and drinks will be available from Back40 BBQ, Street Bites and Hawkeye Downs Concessions, with a Night Meet special from Grind Coffee. Music will be provided by a live DJ from On The House. Later in the evening, the After Hours Performance 2-Step exhaust contest awards a trophy and $50 to the winner. Safety rules will be enforced. Burnouts and hot lapping are prohibited, and a 5 mph speed limit applies. Organizers are also seeking additional sponsors to help reduce costs for attendees in the future, and at present there is a walk-in fee for spectators.
