1 Million Cups Cedar Rapids ft. Familiar Cat Cafe

The weekly 1 Million Cups Cedar Rapids gathering brings entrepreneurs, business leaders, and community members together over coffee to learn, connect, and trade ideas. Each free session spotlights a founder story, expert perspective, or open conversation, then invites a Q&A that encourages collaboration and constructive feedback. Welcoming to all, it is a place to surface challenges, share lessons, and move ideas ahead. This edition features Kat Sung, owner and founder of Familiar Cat Café, an up-and-coming cat café aiming to open in June 2026. Familiar is envisioned as a haven for people and cats, centered on connection and belonging, where healing, intention, and adoption come together. Plans include serving refreshments, showcasing local artists and businesses, and providing a dedicated cat room where guests can spend time with adoptable cats. By working with a local rescue, the café expects to help facilitate adoptions and ease shelter crowding. Sung is a Korean adoptee with experience in psychology, crisis services, and spiritual healing. Guided by an intersectional identity, lived experience, and a love of community and cats, they created Familiar to be a place where every person, and every cat, can feel safe, valued, and at home. The program typically begins with coffee and informal networking, continues with introductions and presentations, and wraps up with presenter feedback, Q&A, and community announcements.

Meet Horror Author: Christopher Micklos | TICK TOWN

Meet horror author and filmmaker Christopher A. Micklos at Shady Character Books for a relaxed meet-and-greet and book signing centered on his first pulp horror novel, TICK TOWN. The tale plunges a small Midwestern vacation spot into chaos as huge mutated ticks turn the area into their feeding grounds, and Micklos frames it as a heartfelt salute to classic giant-insect cinema and the pulpy paperbacks and comics of the seventies and eighties. Acclaimed voices in horror have praised it as a lively return to the golden era of creature-driven scares, recalling the paperback hits that helped define the genre and the outbreak tales associated with authors like Guy N. Smith. Micklos is an award-winning filmmaker and a frequently published writer of horror-focused fiction and nonfiction, and he is based in Madison, Wisconsin.
