28TH ANNUAL STIFF RIDE

Now in its 28th year, this spirited ride is a favorite warm‑up for RAGBRAI, offering 38 miles of pedaling or 44 miles with the optional Shueyville Loop. The route sets out from the New Shack Tavern parking lot and follows the Cedar River bike trail to Ely, with arrows posted at intersections to guide the way. About seven miles in, the first stop is Odie’s Bar in Ely, where a hacky sack circle takes shape out back and House Divided Brewery is nearby for a refreshment. The journey continues roughly 16 miles to Sutliff, with the Team Stiff Bus creating a Beer Oasis along the way. In Sutliff, riders can refuel at Baxa’s Sutliff Store & Tavern, which offers burgers, hotdogs, and beer throughout the day. Enjoy river views, check out the historic Sutliff Bridge, and join another round of hacky sack with fellow cyclists. The final stretch is about 14 miles back to the New Shack Tavern, followed by a party to celebrate the finish. Those seeking extra mileage can turn toward Shueyville for a stop at Shuey’s bar, then head north and east to reconnect with the Cedar River bike trail and return to the Shack. Bring bike lights and blinking reflectors, since the fun can run past sundown, and wear a helmet for safety. Participation is free, and signing up in advance is not necessary. Plan to purchase your own food and drinks at the stops, and note that some locations may accept only cash. Souvenir patches, window stickers, posters, and water bottles will be available in limited quantities on the day of the ride, with an option to arrange advance purchases by contacting the organizer.
