Meet the Author - Annastacia Stegall

    2629 Beaver Ave, Des Moines
    See details

Author Annastacia Stegall shares work from her memoir "Tears, Bra, and All," a hybrid of lyric essay, childhood games, collage, and traditional verse that traces a process of refashioning. The book considers memory as something tangible and asks how what is thrown away can be transformed into meaning. It opens with the fear and intrusion of stalking after her university declined to protect her, then reshapes that experience and other harms into interactive pieces readers can write on, cut, fold, and play with. Poems take the form of cootie catchers, MASH, and other familiar games as she revisits the past with a stronger voice. In the final section she documents sewing a corset from discarded materials, nodding to the found-object lineage of Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven. The writing crackles with anger yet finds moments of light, drawing on classical tragedy, conversing with avant-garde artists and poets, and attending closely to clothing. The result is an autobiographical collage that invites participation and expands what discarded things can signify. Stegall previously lived in Des Moines and now teaches English composition at Gonzaga University in Spokane. Her work has appeared in Gordon Square Review, Querencia Press, and Peatsmoke Journal, among others, and she has read at Beaverdale Books in the past. Des Moines poet BJ Soloy also appears to read from his work. He is the author of "Birth Center in Corporate Woods," "Our Pornography and other disaster songs," and "Selected Letters," with recent poems in journals such as Sixth Finch, At Length, and Painted Bride Quarterly. He teaches at DMACC and at a women’s prison.

The event centers on bringing people together through games and serves as a one-stop hub for the local community. Attendees can connect with local vendors, take part in sessions hosted by area businesses and influencers, and meet new friends in a welcoming setting. Badge holders can reserve free tickets for scheduled events and tournaments, with some special events carrying an additional cost where noted. Signups are available in advance, then continue in person at the registration desk during the convention. The schedule includes tournaments with prizes and a variety of experiences presented by the organizers and community partners. Attendees can also propose and host their own events, and the Meeple Meet app will be used to help coordinate casual pick-up games during the convention. On-site dining is available at The Grill for breakfast and dinner, and there are numerous nearby restaurants in the area, many of which offer delivery through third-party services such as DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub. There is ample parking around the hotel, with the main entrance on the west side and the convention area located in the northwest part of the building. Families are welcome. Children ages 5 to 10 may register for a $10 kids badge or opt for a regular badge. Kids badges do not allow game library checkout or entry into play-to-win drawings. Plack Blague and more

xBk Live, 1159 24th St, Des Moines · verified Oct 11
    See details

xBk presents an evening with Plack Blague and Microwaved. This is an all ages show with general admission standing room, and a limited number of seats available on a first come, first served basis. Guests who need ADA accommodations can reach out at info@xbklive.com. Plack Blague, from Nebraska, delivers a leather-clad, masked stage show that blends raw industrial noise, punishing body music, and pulsing dance grooves. Performances have ranged from theaters and dive bars to galleries, basements, and even children’s television. Press highlights include features in Revolver Magazine and Out Magazine, which premiered the video for Just Another Man of the Street from the 2017 album Night Trax on the Ormolycka Records label. Extensive touring across the United States and Canada led to work with Adam Lee Miller of ADULT., who produced new tracks and brought Plack Blague out as direct support on a full U.S. tour in 2018. The itinerary grew through 2019 with coast to coast dates, a spring European run supporting Ho99o9, and a West Coast stretch from Canada to Mexico with Psychic Graveyard. After returning to stages in late 2020, the momentum continued into 2022 with a UK and European tour supporting ADULT., spanning 22 shows in 12 countries, plus festival appearances at Substance in Los Angeles, Cold Waves in Chicago, Oblivion Access in Austin, Sanctum in Chicago, Terminus in Calgary, and Demon Night in Nashville. Microwaved is the electronic project of Des Moines musician Gabe Wilkinson, started as an outlet while he played in metal and punk bands during the mid 1990s through the early 2000s. The name comes from a Pitchshifter song. The music mixes industrial, electronic, and rock elements and has been well received by fans and critics. Reserved tables are offered as an optional add on and do not include admission. Each person must still have a general admission ticket, so a group of three would buy three tickets and one table. A limited number of tables seat up to four and are available as floor high top side tables or premium balcony high top tables, each priced at 50 dollars plus fees. Any remaining unreserved seating is first come, first served.

Basketball players in K5 to 6th grade must attend one evaluation to help create balanced teams. These evaluations are not tryouts, and every registered player is placed on a team. Three evaluation sessions are available. Basketball participants also need to complete the required waiver and bring it to their evaluation. Cheer participants do not need evaluations or waivers.
