The inaugural gathering of the Humane Letters Society of the Magic Valley introduces Bored to Death, a series that lays out the Framework of Recovered Vision, an approach to the liberal arts that treats great works as formative encounters rather than mere facts to consume. Before turning to the first major text, Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, the group will reflect on how everyday habits encourage quick escapes from boredom and will explore a progression that moves from boredom into leisure, then longing, contemplation, and ultimately transcendence. This foundation is intended to guide how participants read, discuss, and receive great texts together. People of all ages are welcome, especially those interested in great books, Christian wisdom, imagination, beauty, and rich conversation.

Pablo Cruise takes the stage with the easygoing spirit and grounded vocals that defined the band from the start. Their 1975 A&M debut arrived with a memorable Golden Gate Park cover and a name that blends sincerity with a love of good times, a mix reflected in unadorned singing and elegant, infectious grooves. The live show builds on that foundation with lively momentum. Through the late 1970s and early 1980s, the group toured the United States, Canada and Japan, earned multiple chart successes, sold millions of records, and appeared on television programs including American Bandstand, The Merv Griffin Show and The Dinah Shore Hour. In 1979 they set a new attendance mark at the Sahara Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe, became the first rock band to play a casino showroom, and were the first rock act to appear on the Grand Ole Opry stage. After seven studio albums and extensive touring, they paused for nearly two decades. Reuniting in 2005, Pablo Cruise continues to perform across North America. An in-person lecture presented by SVMoA features Sarah Newman of the Smithsonian American Art Museum discussing Nick Cave: Mammoth, an exhibition on view at SAAM through January 3, 2027. Cave reimagines the museum’s galleries as an immersive setting shaped by crafted representations of mammoth hides and bones, a video that animates the long-extinct creatures, and hundreds of transformed everyday items, from vintage tools to his grandmother’s thimble collection, arranged like scientific specimens on a large illuminated table. By elevating ordinary and often overlooked materials, the work reflects on what communities value and how shared meaning is formed. It acknowledges cultures and lives that have been lost, while revealing the imaginative possibilities found in the most modest materials. Newman is the James Dicke Curator of Contemporary Art and deputy head curator at SAAM, with responsibilities spanning research, exhibitions, and acquisitions for the museum’s contemporary holdings. Her scholarship explores the connections between contemporary art and design and focuses on art of the 1980s. She has taught at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, George Mason University, and Georgetown University, and holds a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. This talk is part of SVMoA’s Museum Passport series, which features presentations on artists in major museum exhibitions throughout the United States.
