CHDs occur in about 1 in 110 births annually, while new cancer diagnoses are made in about 1 in 6,024 children and teens each year. The day features 18 holes of scramble play, a bucket of range balls, lunch and dinner, chances to take home trophies and prizes, and an after party at the club with food and drinks. Across a curated mix of short plays and monologues, the festival blends humor and heart to reframe medical gaslighting, executive dysfunction, the split between mind and body, and the absurdity that can accompany chronic illness. Stories touch on navigating the health care system, the intersection of disability with race and policing, a cheeky take on Crohn’s disease and relationships, the perspective of a blind lesbian out on the town, and the extra jitters a hearing impaired person may feel on a first date. One piece nods to a classic tale of wallpapered confinement, while others center protagonists who claim their narratives and community. Accessibility is centered. Different live performances feature options such as ASL interpretation, open captions, audio description, and mask required or mask encouraged environments, with high quality masks available for the audience and transparent panel respirators used by performers when needed. The venue is ADA certified, with ramp access and a chair lift. Each performance runs about two hours and includes an intermission. A recording will also be available online for a limited window with a suggested donation of 10 dollars for streaming. General admission is 30 dollars, with 15 dollar advance tickets offered for every performance. The festival compensates its actors, directors, and playwrights with invisible disabilities, blending in person and remote participation and including pre recorded monologues to support immunocompromised artists. It is produced by Violet Surprise Theatre with accessibility consultation by Terri Lynne Hudson and by Paula Kamen with Hysterical Productions, and it is supported in part by a grant from the Evanston Arts Council.
