An artist-led walk with Hui-min Tsen marks the launch of a project that reads the landscape through the lens of the survey grid and its histories. Over roughly 1.5 miles and about 90 minutes, the route focuses on a single quarter section within the township-and-range system, including its connections to Senator Stephen Douglas’ former estate and traces such as the old Lake Michigan meander, using a field guide approach to reveal how past actors and events continue to shape public space. The project is part of Navigations, a series of artist projects in and about public space. A contingency plan is in place for extreme weather, with updates to be posted online if conditions are uncertain.

This is a litter pickup only, so anything that does not fit in a bag will not be collected, and bulk items should be directed to the City of Berwyn’s public works. After the cleanup, volunteers plan to grab tacos at Parrilla Express. Photos and video may be taken for 15 West social media and promotional use, and anyone can ask not to be photographed. Choose how to bid farewell to your pumpkin, whether by breaking it into bits, tossing it from a railing, or trying other playful options. After the fun, gather around the fire to roast hot dogs and toast s’mores. A wagon, bucket, or bin will make it easier to move pumpkins through the smash areas. You are welcome to stay and enjoy the festivities or simply drop off pumpkins for composting. All collected pumpkins will be transported to McDonald Farm to be composted at their organic operation. This regional effort, coordinated by SCARCE, highlights composting and careful use of resources. Turning pumpkins into compost keeps waste out of landfills, reduces greenhouse gases, and creates a natural soil amendment. Admission is free, all ages are welcome, and no registration is required. Please remove all non organic materials such as candles, wax, and artificial decorations. Pumpkins coated with synthetic paint cannot be composted. Pumpkins decorated with tempera paint that is non toxic may be separated for on site composting, however they cannot take part in the smash activities. The setting includes a mix of uneven natural ground and accessible sidewalks, and the nature center is accessible. Requests for auxiliary aids or services should be made at least 48 hours before the program.

All supplies are included, along with protective gloves and step-by-step instruction suited to both first-timers and experienced crafters. A broad selection of pressed blooms is available so each person can craft a look that is colorful and bold or soft and understated. Each ticket covers one candle and all materials, and $10 from every ticket benefits Kiwanis programs that help children and the community.
