Triumph of the Spirit

At Quincy Junior High Auditorium, the Quincy Symphony Orchestra and Choruses, under the direction of Bruce Briney, present a wide-ranging concert that pairs landmark works with a brand-new overture. Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms stands at the center, an expressive setting of Hebrew texts that combines vibrant rhythmic energy with moments of calm. Boy soprano Benedict Stratton appears with the Symphony Chorus and Youth Chorus, joined by choirs from John Wood Community College, Quincy University, and Culver-Stockton College, guiding listeners from joy to contemplation and toward a closing sense of peace and unity. In striking contrast, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, written in 1937 under intense political scrutiny in the Soviet Union, moves from a brooding opening to a blazing conclusion, weaving sweeping melodies and stark contrasts into a journey of struggle, resilience, and triumph. The program opens with the world premiere of Thrill Seeker, a newly commissioned overture by St. Louis composer Stephanie Berg. It launches with propulsive strings, crisp brass, and percussion, then unveils a lyrical horn theme echoed by the flute as the music builds to a bright, celebratory finish. Single tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for seniors 62 and older, available at Quincy Hy-Vee stores and Sturhahn Jewelers. With support from the Tracy Family Foundation, children 18 and under are admitted free to all concerts. The annual QSOA Raffle will be drawn at intermission, featuring a $1,000 grand prize and additional prizes including a Chicago Symphony getaway package, St. Louis and Illinois Symphony tickets, and two QSOA season tickets. Raffle tickets are $10 each or 12 for $100 and may be purchased at the concert or from orchestra, chorus, Encore, or board members. The raffle is sponsored by HomeBank. Season support is provided by Quincy Recycle and The Knapheide Manufacturing Company. The concert sponsor is Mercantile Bank, media sponsor is WGEM-TV, and music sponsor is Schmiedeskamp, Robertson, Neu & Mitchell LLP. Program notes and information are posted on the QSOA website. Information is available at 217-222-2856.
