Olympic Tavern's 3rd Beefsteak Banquet

The third Beefsteak Banquet at The Olympic Tavern embraces the classic no napkins, no silverware approach, with a focus on hearty cuts of meat. Meat is served on toast points that are collected rather than eaten, and everyone takes home a custom apron. The format nods to the historic Beefsteak gatherings that once filled saloons and political halls in the 19th and early 20th centuries, where sliced steak on toast with jus or gravy was eaten without forks, plates, or napkins, a custom that faded after World War II. Vegetarians are asked to sit this one out, with a special vegetarian dinner to follow later in the spring.

Kid's Art Contest -- Design Our New Kid's Shirts, Win A $100 Gift Card & More

An art contest at The Olympic will select a kid-created design for a limited run of youth T-shirts. The usual kids menu drawing tradition that spotlights servers shifts to illustrations of the restaurant itself. Children can depict The Olympic, the fireplace or the Moose, or another signature feature of the space. After a month of entries, one design will be printed on the shirts. The winner, or their parent or guardian, receives a $100 gift card and two shirts featuring the artwork, and three honorable mentions receive $25 gift cards. Kids’ drawings are displayed behind the host station, and this contest adds a new twist to that ongoing tradition.

The Hope & Anchor Comedy Night

Settle in at The Hope & Anchor for a night of stand-up with a host, a feature, and a headliner. There is a $10 cover. For a table reservation or to ask about walk-up availability, call The Hope & Anchor at 815-633-2552 during normal business hours. Hosting is Michael Palmenderi, known for energetic, physical comedy that touches on living with chronic pain, breaking into song like a musical, and being hairy in a world that prefers otherwise. He has a theatre background, trained at The Second City Chicago and completed its Conservatory, and has appeared in multiple productions across the Chicagoland area. The main feature, Lou Palomino, is a Chicago native turned small-town family man whose material explores marriage, parenting, and the frustrations of everyday life. He started stand-up in his late 30s, delivering a conversational, story-driven style that feels like catching up with an old friend. His clean, relatable approach has made him a regular at Peoria’s Jukebox Comedy Club, and he has hosted or featured for April Macie, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Ben Bailey, Jay Mohr, and Greg Hahn. Headlining is Leslie Mitchell, a Midwestern comic with a joyful spirit and a strong affection for cheeseburgers. She has performed around the country, opening for Dave Attell, Roy Wood Jr., Bobcat Goldthwait, Adrienne Iapalucci, Geoffrey Asmus, and Mary Mack. A former "Funniest Person in Iowa" winner, her set zeroes in on Gen X touchstones... nostalgia, marriage, menopause, and those walk-into-a-room-and-forget-why moments. She performs solo stand-up and is also one third of the long-running improv troupe Wisenheimer.

Stern Army- POKEMON- Launch Party Double Tournament

Louie’s Tap House hosts a Stern Army POKEMON launch party with two pinball tournaments. The first tournament features qualifying that leads into playoffs. Each participant receives one free game on POKEMON, and that score counts toward qualifying. The highest four scores advance, or eight if there are more than forty players. Playoffs span four games, with the final game played on POKEMON. Practice games on POKEMON are not permitted during qualifying. For this tournament only, the $1 IFPA fee is covered. Expect prizes and giveaways, and the champion earns a Launch Party Grand Champion plaque. The second tournament starts with a 7 strike progressive knockout. Once the field is reduced to four or eight competitors, a double elimination playoff follows for the top 4 or 8 qualifiers, implemented if there are 24 or more players and based on attendance. If four players reach the finals, the winners bracket uses best of three matches and the losers bracket uses single game matches. If eight players reach the finals, all matches are single game in both winners and losers brackets. Payouts go to the top four finishers at 40, 30, 20, and 10 percent. The entry fee is $5, which includes the $1 IFPA fee, plus coin drop. Both tournaments are IFPA approved. Sponsored by Rockford Pinball, Toad Hall Books and Records, and Louie’s Tap House.

Big Brew 2026 - Urban Forest

National Homebrew Day was formally recognized in 1988, and the American Homebrewers Association created Big Brew as a yearly, worldwide celebration held on the first Saturday in May, when homebrew clubs gather to brew and celebrate together. This year, the gathering returns to Urban Forest Craft Brewing, where brewers are encouraged to bring their equipment and brew on site. There is plenty of room, with water hookups and standard electrical outlets available, although 220/240 volt service is not provided. Plans call for a rain-or-shine experience, with club tents available if needed. Organizers request advance notice from those planning to brew, and early setup can be accommodated. The day is welcoming for people new to homebrewing, offering a chance to watch multiple batches from start to finish, compare different setups, and pick up practical tips. As a public event, it also serves as a recruiting opportunity for the club. Alongside the beers on tap at Urban Forest, attendees may bring homebrewed beer to share. The American Homebrewers Association has released this year’s official Big Brew recipes, including Monk’s Ration Trappist-Style Single, George and Aaron’s Pre-Prohibition Porter, and Dark Cellar Imperial Stout.
