Bridge Builders - June 23rd - Spotlight Speakers

John and Jan Bowman of TLC Construction step into the spotlight to share how they built a company together over 25 years. After Sundstrand was acquired by UTC, John chose entrepreneurship, inspired by a lunch conversation with a church friend who moved from trucking management into handyman work. He started with handyman projects as a gateway to general contracting, drawing on prior experiences that touched construction, including project-managing the build of the Atwood Mobile Products headquarters. The company began lean with a secondhand pickup and a thousand flyers. Jan’s background is in education, culminating in staff development at the Regional Office of Education. She left during the 2008 recession and spent months with John clarifying where her strengths fit the business. Bookkeeping was already covered and not the right match. As new home construction stalled and many out-of-work builders crowded into remodeling, she turned to marketing, expanding relationships through networking groups and service on community boards. This talk highlights how they navigated a shifting market, defined their roles, and grew TLC Construction with tender loving care.

The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds

A staging at Rockford University of the 1971 Pulitzer Prize for Drama recipient The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds explores the turbulent home of Beatrice Hunsdorfer, a hardened widow who keeps the family afloat by housing a frail boarder. Her older daughter, Ruth, is high strung and prone to convulsions, while her younger daughter, Tillie, is intensely shy yet shows a natural talent for science. Encouraged by a teacher, Tillie completes a botany experiment that wins a school prize, a success that clashes with Beatrice’s pride and jealousy, twisting affection into sharp criticism. Even so, Tillie’s achievement suggests that beauty and hope can grow from the unlikeliest soil. Long regarded as a landmark of 20th century theater, this production is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Licensing, LLC, servicing the Dramatists Play Service collection. Season support is provided by sponsor Pure Flo H20 along with co-sponsors Lori & Mike Rasmann and Markus Smith State Farm.

Doors are scheduled to open and may open earlier if the second rehearsal wraps up sooner, with exact timing determined by the venue, so families should coordinate directly with their performer. Everyone needs a ticket except enrolled R&RI campers, who are admitted at no charge because it is their show. Young children count toward capacity and also need tickets, and strollers are not permitted. Tickets will be available at the door for $20, and advance purchase is encouraged. Use the discount code FRIENDSANDFAMILY to secure a $15 rate. Entry is subject to legal capacity, and without a ticket there will be no admittance. This is a standing room only event. A side room with chairs will be available for anyone who needs a seat, but chairs are not allowed near the stage. Wheelchairs, rollators, and other mobility devices are welcome. For safety, the space directly in front of the stage is not suitable for seated guests due to a dense, energetic crowd with active dancing.
