The 10th Annual Running of the Lights offers a festive running tour through Winding Brook Park’s brilliant holiday displays, created each year by neighborhood residents in support of area charities. Fleet Feet Mishawaka is working toward a $2,000 donation goal, beginning with $1,000 and inviting the running community to help reach the remaining $1,000. A minimum $5 donation per runner is suggested. The Teddy Bear Trot invites participants to bring a new stuffed teddy bear that will be provided to a local nonprofit to brighten a child’s holiday season. Parking and check-in take place at Walt Disney Elementary School. All participants must check in on arrival and will receive a safety light to wear for the entire run. Follow the marked traffic signs, which will feature flashing lights to help guide the route. The run will finish where it starts to allow a safe return to vehicles at a traffic light. Volunteers will be stationed along the course to assist. Although the neighborhood lights are bright, bringing a headlamp or knuckle lights is recommended to spot potholes and uneven pavement. Festive attire such as light-up necklaces is encouraged. Strollers are welcome if children remain seated. Vehicle traffic is lighter and generally one way along the route, yet cars are present. Runners may be with traffic most of the time and against it in some areas. Please leave dogs at home, and stay home if not feeling well. Routes are available with options around 3.9 miles, 3.4 miles, and a super short route of about 1.4 miles. Turn-by-turn navigation can be used in real time, and a limited number of paper maps will be available at check-in, though they can be difficult to read once out on the course. Registration can be completed in advance with online donations, and onsite registration will be available via mobile device.

Celebrate the fifth annual Flannel 5K and 1 mile run at Beutter Park with a jolly jog along the Mishawaka Riverwalk. The 1 mile goes first, followed by the 5K. This chip-timed event awards a medal to every participant, with additional recognition for the top male and female finishers in both distances. Packet pickup will be available at Fleet Feet in Mishawaka and on race morning at Chicory Café in Mishawaka. A free community concert spotlights Celia Weiss on the Lerner Theatre’s historic 1924 Kimball pipe organ. A pianist and organist recognized throughout the region, Weiss has appeared as a soloist on both instruments and has performed with the Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra, South Bend Symphony Orchestra, the IUSB Philharmonic, and the Manchester University Symphony Orchestra, along with recital appearances across the area. Weiss serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at Indiana University South Bend’s Raclin School of the Arts, where she teaches organ. Her honors include IUSB’s Merit Status and Outstanding Alumni awards. She holds a B.M.E. from Manchester College and an M.M. in piano from Indiana University. Her teaching background includes Elkhart and Goshen Community Schools and piano instruction at Goshen College. Since 1975 she has led music and served as organist at First Presbyterian Church in Elkhart. She is a regular accompanist for the Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra and presents multiple piano and organ programs in the theatre’s midday series each year. The venue’s 1924 Kimball pipe organ is one of just two Kimball instruments still in their original locations. Restored during the theatre’s 2011 renovation, the instrument was reinstalled by a team of nearly 20 from Bunn-Minnick Pipe Organs in Columbus, Ohio, who spent about three weeks setting equipment and placing more than 1,000 pipes in two chambers, investing close to 10,000 hours over a year. After the concert, a behind-the-scenes guided tour offers a closer look at the theatre’s history, architecture, and working spaces. Tickets cost $10 per person and can be purchased in advance or at the box office on the day of the tour. No reservations are needed. Hosted and coordinated by Team RWB South Bend, this 9th annual local observance focuses on remembering the fallen, honoring those who serve, and teaching the next generation about the value of freedom. What began in 1992 when Morrill Worcester sent 5,000 surplus wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery has grown into a worldwide effort. After a widely shared 2005 photo of snow-covered wreaths, participation expanded rapidly. By 2025, more than 3.1 million sponsored wreaths were placed at over 5,598 locations, with a significant share of the work led by children. The Michiana community has carried this tradition forward each December. The day begins with an indoor ceremony inside the John Young Middle School gymnasium just north of the cemetery, followed by a walk to Fairview Cemetery to place wreaths. Parking is encouraged in the John Young Middle School lot for a short walk to the grounds. Local qualifying groups supporting the effort include Team RWB South Bend, Stop 22 Michiana Inc., Cub Scouts Pack 108 LaSalle Council, Troop 122 Osceola, and Troop 105 St. Joe.
