Families will paint and assemble rock-based activity kits to be donated to children in therapy, seniors in nursing homes, libraries, hospitals, and others in the community, all to spark play, conversation, and connection. Each family chooses one of four options to make. Create a tic tac toe game set for friendly fun, craft paired stones for a memory match that supports focus and social interaction, design story stones that fuel imagination, storytelling, and language growth, or make emotion stones with expressive faces that help children recognize feelings, start conversations, and build social emotional skills. Every handmade kit can boost confidence for a child in therapy or bring smiles and meaningful conversation to an older adult, showing how small acts of care can lead to lasting connections.

Hands-on creativity welcomes little explorers at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, where Discovery Day takes place in the LongHouse Visitors Center on the first Tuesday of each month. Each session features a fresh make-and-take activity inspired by nature, and all materials are provided. Projects are available on a first-come, first-served basis for the first 100 participants. The first Tuesday also coincides with Free Admission Day, so entry to the gardens and this craft experience are both free. In September, the project invites participants to build a bug or create a bug hotel.
