Using the shift from steam to diesel engines, electric trains, automobiles, and trucks as a real-world case study, the talk connects technological change to biological patterns. Through this lens, attendees consider what scientists would expect to see in nature if competition is a major force, then compare those expectations with the fossil record. Blending science, history, technology, and storytelling, this program offers a fresh perspective on evolution and extinction. Happy Hour drinks are available. Tickets are free for members and $10 for non-members.

Keith Jarrett "The Köln Concert"
Eat.sleep.jazz turns the spotlight on Keith Jarrett’s 1975 recording The Köln Concert, often cited as the most successful solo jazz album. For this installment, Bill Brooks fills in for Teddy. An opening segment explores how Jarrett transformed a less-than-ideal piano and deep fatigue into a melodic, improvisational journey that weaves together elements of jazz, classical, and folk. The album is then played on a high-fidelity sound system for an uninterrupted listen, revealing intimate details like the pulse of Jarrett’s footwork, his vocal murmurs, and the resonant shimmer of the piano strings. The result captures the recording’s intensity and clarity, inviting a reflective, immersive experience. A $10 donation supports Center For Recorded Music, a 501(c)(3), and includes entry, complimentary snacks and beverages, plus one complimentary adult drink with choices that include beer, wine, mixed drinks, and nonalcoholic options. The series continues on Wednesday nights with host Teddy Dibble highlighting additional legendary jazz albums.

This listening event spotlights the 40th anniversary of Peter Gabriel’s So, the 1986 album that brought his adventurous ideas to a wider audience. Hosted by Kelsyn Rooks of Listyn KC, the program begins with curated selections and context that trace the album’s turn toward a brighter, Otis Redding–inspired soulfulness shaped with co-producer Daniel Lanois. The introduction delves into creative and technical facets such as the Fairlight CMI sampler, fretless bass by Tony Levin, and percussion by Manu Katché. The complete album is then played on The Listyning Room’s high-end stereo system featuring Audio Note, Klipsch, and Cambridge Audio, bringing out the spacious detail of Mercy Street and the cinematic punch of Sledgehammer. A $20 donation supports Center For Recorded Music 501(c)(3) and includes admission, snacks, and three complimentary drinks, with options that include beer, cocktails, wine, and non-alcoholic choices.
