The CapitolSpeech and Debate Fall Prep Day Camp
This three day speech and debate camp is designed for ages 8 to 14 and focuses on review, skill refinement, confidence, and competition readiness. Participants work toward leaving with a polished speech or debate piece, a clear understanding of competition expectations, stronger delivery habits, and the poise to step into the fall season with confidence. Day one builds foundations for strong speeches by emphasizing structure, easing nerves with a short spotlight warm up, revisiting informative, persuasive, how to, and declamation formats through interactive movement, and running a delivery bootcamp to sharpen voice projection, eye contact, purposeful pauses, and gestures. Small group practice circles give each student time to present a favorite or prepared piece and exchange concise peer feedback, followed by a personal reflection to set a goal for the next session. Day two turns to persuasion and debate with an opinion line warm up, a refresher on opinion, reasons, examples, and conclusion that leads to a one minute persuasive talk, and hands on practice with claim, reason, response, one minute debates, and four corner debates using topics such as optional homework, choosing bedtime, and later school starts, with sides assigned at random. Mini rounds rotate students through the roles of speaker, opponent, and judge while reinforcing listening, calm delivery, and clear reasoning, and the day closes with a strongest line share to boost confidence. Day three simulates competition through a calming focus routine, a review of rules and expectations covering time limits, introductions, judge behavior, handling nerves, and strategies for recovering if a line is forgotten, and mock rounds that mirror a tournament with timers, speaking order, and judges drawn from a teacher and peers. Students perform one main event from prepared speech, declamation, persuasive speaking, or introductory debate, then receive written notes, one on one coaching, and final tips to polish openings, closings, and delivery. A closing showcase invites parents, other students, and staff to watch participants present their best piece, concluding with certificates, recognition for being ready for fall, and applause for everyone. Optional add ons may include an impromptu speaking game, debate trivia, judge comment role play, and team chants or a club identity activity. The program balances speech and debate, builds confidence step by step, and safely simulates competition so participants head into the season prepared rather than overwhelmed.

The Filthy Heathens and The Damn Shames
The Filthy Heathens make their Grove debut alongside The Damn Shames, pairing two bands that blend Southern roots with rock drive. The Filthy Heathens formed around the spark between Bronson Hetzer, Ryan Palcic, and “Captain” Craig Bishop, then expanded with guitarists Cody Doench and Dawson Stepp to complete a five-piece ready for the stage. Their sound mixes classic country grit with hard rock bite and a modern alt edge, drawing on influences like Skynyrd and Waylon while nodding to Blackberry Smoke and The Steel Woods. Known for high-energy shows and a growing following, they aim to pull crowds into the moment. Rooted in western Kentucky, The Damn Shames deliver straight-ahead rock and roll colored by Southern swagger and country tones. Clayton Crowder leads on vocals and guitar with storytelling that moves from anthems to tender ballads. Trevor Smith drives the lead guitar with sleek, soaring lines, Andrew Hopper holds down the low end, and Zach Coffey keeps the groove tight with seasoned honky tonk precision. Shepherd Hieb adds pedal steel, mandolin, banjo, and slide when the song calls for it, and the group’s layered vocal harmonies bring an Eagles-like shine. All ages are welcome, and children 12 and under are admitted free. Food vendors will be on site.
