It follows how building materials and design choices reflect specific cultures, eras, places, and families, moving from a millionaire’s mansion to a working sailor’s home. Along the way, hear about the people connected to PEM properties such as the John Ward House, the Ropes Mansion, and the Daniel Bray House, and learn about notable sites like Derby Square, the Lyceum, and the courthouses on Federal Street. The tour also explores how colonization, revolution, and maritime trade shaped the city’s architecture and community. Plan for approximately two hours and about 1.5 miles of indoor and outdoor walking. Expect standing on hard surfaces and using stairs. Historic structures on this route are not ADA accessible. Strollers may be used during the tour but cannot enter the historic buildings. Some areas may have low lighting and uneven floors. Assisted listening devices are provided. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes, as the tour runs rain or shine. Pricing is $40 for adults ages 17 and up, $37 for seniors ages 65 and up, $30 for students with school ID, military, veterans, and MTA or teachers, and $15 for Salem residents, museum members, and members’ children ages 6 to 16. Children 5 and younger are free, though a ticket is still required. Tickets are available online, at the Admissions desk, or outside the museum on tour days. This walking tour ticket does not include museum admission. Strollers are permitted during the walk but cannot enter the historic interiors. Some rooms may feature low lighting and uneven floors. Assisted listening devices are provided for all tours. Plan for a two hour experience that moves between indoor and outdoor settings, dress for the weather, and wear comfortable shoes. Tours run rain or shine. Pricing is as follows: $40 for ages 17 and up, $37 for ages 65 and up, $30 for students with school ID, military, veterans, and MTA and teachers, and $15 for Salem residents, museum members, and members’ children ages 6 to 16.
