Brick by Brick: Salem's Hidden Architectural Stories

Peabody Essex Museum, 161 Essex St, Salem · verified Aug 17
    See details

Brick by Brick: Salem's Hidden Architectural Stories is a guided walking tour from the Peabody Essex Museum that opens doors to historic interiors and traces five centuries of Salem history, including the 1692 witch trials. It follows how building materials and design choices reflect specific cultures, eras, places, and families, moving from a millionaire’s mansion to a working sailor’s home. Along the way, hear about the people connected to PEM properties such as the John Ward House, the Ropes Mansion, and the Daniel Bray House, and learn about notable sites like Derby Square, the Lyceum, and the courthouses on Federal Street. The tour also explores how colonization, revolution, and maritime trade shaped the city’s architecture and community. Plan for approximately two hours and about 1.5 miles of indoor and outdoor walking. Expect standing on hard surfaces and using stairs. Historic structures on this route are not ADA accessible. Strollers may be used during the tour but cannot enter the historic buildings. Some areas may have low lighting and uneven floors. Assisted listening devices are provided. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes, as the tour runs rain or shine. Pricing is $40 for adults ages 17 and up, $37 for seniors ages 65 and up, $30 for students with school ID, military, veterans, and MTA or teachers, and $15 for Salem residents, museum members, and members’ children ages 6 to 16. Children 5 and younger are free, though a ticket is still required. Tickets are available online, at the Admissions desk, or outside the museum on tour days. This walking tour ticket does not include museum admission. Related options include Sinister Streets: Witch Trials, Murders and Literary Legends, which visits 1692 landmarks and the site of an 1830 murder that inspired Edgar Allan Poe, and the Sinister Streets & Salem Stories combination tour, which includes a museum visit.

Brick by Brick: Salem's Hidden Architectural Stories

Peabody Essex Museum, 161 Essex St, Salem · verified Aug 17
    See details

Brick by Brick: Salem's Hidden Architectural Stories offers a behind-the-scenes guided walk highlighting architectural treasures from PEM’s collection. These are the only walking tours in Salem that include access inside historic buildings, tracing five centuries of people and events in Witch City, including the 1692 trials. Compare a millionaire’s mansion with a working sailor’s home and see how materials and design choices reveal culture, era, place, and family. Stories emerge from PEM properties such as the John Ward House, the Ropes Mansion, and the Daniel Bray House, along with landmarks like Derby Square, the Lyceum, and the courthouses on Federal Street. Expect a route of about 1.5 miles over hard surfaces with stairs. Historic structures on the itinerary are not ADA accessible. Strollers are permitted during the walk but cannot enter the historic interiors. Some rooms may feature low lighting and uneven floors. Assisted listening devices are provided for all tours. Plan for a two hour experience that moves between indoor and outdoor settings, dress for the weather, and wear comfortable shoes. Tours run rain or shine. Pricing is as follows: $40 for ages 17 and up, $37 for ages 65 and up, $30 for students with school ID, military, veterans, and MTA and teachers, and $15 for Salem residents, museum members, and members’ children ages 6 to 16. Children 5 and under are free with a ticket. Tickets are available online, at the Admissions desk, or outside the museum on tour days. This walking tour ticket does not include museum admission, while the combination Sinister Streets & Salem Stories option does. Those interested in Salem’s darker chapters can also explore Sinister Streets: Witch Trials, Murders and Literary Legends, which visits 1692 sites and the location of an 1830 murder that inspired Edgar Allan Poe.

Welcome Back My Friends: An Evening with Emerson, Lake & Palmer

The Cabot, 286 Cabot St, Beverly · verified Aug 17
    See details

At The Cabot, Carl Palmer presents a multimedia concert created with his management and produced in full cooperation with the Keith Emerson and Greg Lake estates. Using modern technology, Carl performs live on stage with his ELP Legacy bandmates Paul Bielatowicz and Simon Fitzpatrick while Keith Emerson and Greg Lake appear on screen from a sold out Royal Albert Hall concert. The live musicians and archival video are precisely synchronized so everyone plays together as one, delivering a complete and faithful Emerson, Lake & Palmer performance that is not a tribute act. Emerson, Lake & Palmer, the English progressive rock supergroup formed in London by keyboardist Keith Emerson, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Greg Lake, and drummer Carl Palmer, earned nine RIAA-certified gold albums in the United States and an estimated 48 million records sold worldwide. Their music fused classical influences with jazz and symphonic rock, marked by Emerson’s work on Hammond organ, Moog synthesizer, and piano, along with acoustic songs written by Lake. After rising to prominence at the Isle of Wight Festival, they released landmark albums including their self-titled debut, Tarkus, Pictures at an Exhibition, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery, Works Volume 1, Works Volume 2, and Love Beach, later reunited for Black Moon and In the Hot Seat, and ultimately gave a final performance in London to mark their 40th anniversary. Following the later passings of Emerson and Lake, Palmer remains the surviving member. Originally introduced as The Return of Emerson Lake & Palmer, the production is now presented as An Evening with Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

    David Wilcox

Off Cabot, 11 Wallis St, Beverly · verified Aug 17
    See details

David Wilcox offers an evening of intimate folk storytelling that turns lived experience into songs listeners can carry with them. His 2025 release, The Way I Tell the Story, focuses on resilience and quiet honesty, with arrangements that leave space for the emotion at the center of his writing. In recent years his wife’s Parkinson’s diagnosis has shaped the themes he explores, refining his sense of time, love, and presence. The result is music that faces complexity without dramatizing it and avoids tidy conclusions while remaining calm and brave. Wilcox first reached a wide audience in the late 1980s when his independently released debut drew interest from A&M Records, leading to How Did You Find Me Here, a surprise success that sold more than 100,000 copies largely by word of mouth and in person performances. Critics praised his deft guitar work and emotional clarity, with Rolling Stone noting his keen, soulful perspective and The New York Times describing a therapeutic openness in his music. Later albums such as Big Horizon, Turning Point, and What You Whispered strengthened his reputation for speaking difficult truths with a gentle touch that lasts. Along the way he has collaborated and shared stages with Shawn Colvin, Patty Larkin, Pierce Pettis, and John Gorka, and his songs have been covered by k.d. lang and Tony Rice. In 2018 he earned top honors in the 23rd annual USA Songwriting for We Make the Way by Walking from The View From the Edge. His influence runs deep among artists who value craft over spectacle, and for audiences the reward is not flash or volume, but songs that feel alive, generous, and real.

Led by bassist and composer Mike Rivard, the ensemble features a fluid roster from Boston, New York, and beyond, with trance serving as the heartbeat of the music. The latest album, Loon and Thrush, was captured live in the studio with minimal overdubs, channeling a raw, in the moment approach. Centered on Rivard’s compositions, it also tips the hat to key inspirations with Moroccan-inflected versions of the Grateful Dead’s Bird Song and New Speedway Boogie. Sound Healing for the Soul, 218 Boston St, Topsfield · verified Aug 17
    See details

In Lisa Kawski’s studio, this session blends guided meditation with Sound Healing for the Soul. The experience is grounded in the view that everything resonates and that energy fosters connection with oneself and with others. Simple ceremony and gentle guidance encourage quiet introspection and a sense of expansion, creating conditions for deep rest. Settle in as the shimmering tones of crystal singing bowls, chimes, gong, drums and bells, along with other resonant instruments, surround you. Sound vibration can help recalibrate body, mind and spirit. Allow tension to soften as the music washes over you. Please bring whatever will help you feel comfortable, such as a yoga mat, pillow or blanket. Crystals are welcome for an energetic charge. Admission is $40 and must be prepaid to reserve a spot. Prepaid tickets are nonrefundable, but you may transfer your seat to a friend if you are unable to attend. Payment is accepted through PayPal or Venmo, and include the specific session date with your payment. To support a calm, clean and supportive healing environment, arrive free of synthetic fragrances, heavy scents and cigarette smoke. Entry may be declined to preserve the sacred space for everyone, and payments remain nonrefundable in such cases. Lisa’s background includes classical piano study from childhood through college and coursework in music history and appreciation. She discovered sound healing in 2016 after playing a quartz crystal singing bowl, then created Sound Healing for the Soul to share this work. Her love of devotional chant led to cofounding the kirtan band Nada Brahma with her partner, and she has performed with artists such as Lee Mirabai Harrington, Mirabai Moon, Ananti Devi, Sagit Zilberman and Mirabai Devi.
